    Boss It Podcast

Hi All! All my name is Sophia! The aim of the podcast is to provide tangible advice for women entrepreneurs in areas of business, health and self-help. Each episode will have a few action items that the listener can apply if the episode resonated with them - hence the tag line "Make a plan, take action" . I'll give you my background in a nutshell: I am a registered physiotherapist in Canada but moved into leadership at a local hospital. Then went part-time as a manager at a publicly funded medical clinic, so I could grow my product based startup. This brand new biz landed into Walmart Canada last spring. A lot of ladies have been asking for help with their startup because they saw such fast growth of my product based company (the company name is Also Sophia) and so I thought a podcast would be a great way to reach a larger audience. Hope you enjoy!xoxo Sophia

Episode 114 | AI Tools You Need in 2023 to Scale Your Business

Episode 114 | AI Tools You Need in 2023 to Scale Your Business

Innovating your business means stepping up your game. Do you think that AI tools are the game-changer you need in 2023?

Artificial intelligence, or AI, is indeed a powerful tool, and the good news is that you can implement it into your business operations! Utilizing AI tools can boost your productivity as it can handle your tasks promptly, allowing you to move to your other strategic activities. This enables you to leverage your skills while spending less on the areas of your business operations that can be handled by AI tools.

Let me share with you my top 3 AI tools you need in 2023 to scale your business:

    1. Fireflies.ai - an AI note-taking tool that transcribes your entire meeting and put the notes succinctly into meeting notes. It will not just help you focus more on your meeting but will also allow you to take those notes and transform them into other forms of educational content.
    2. Open AI’s Chat GPT - an AI-powered natural language processing tool that can provide answers to your questions and help you with tasks like email composition. Personally, it has been helping me with idea generation and when writing lengthy letters.
    3.  Shopify Inbox - a chatbot that acts as our customer service tool on our website, alsosophia.com. And it's great because if we're not available and a customer needs our service, it will respond on our behalf.

Episode 113 | Go from Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur — Why People Stay Stuck!

Episode 113 | Go from Wantrepreneur to Entrepreneur — Why People Stay Stuck!

Would you describe yourself as a wantrepreneur? Or do you know someone who is a wantrepreneur?

The term "wantrepreneur" refers to someone who desires to create their own business but hasn't been able to get started. Wantrepreneurs have fresh and creative ideas but lack the courage to take action and risks. In this episode, we discuss the barriers that might hinder you in your transition from a wantrepreneur to an entrepreneur and the strategies that can help you avoid them.

Let me share with you why you might be stuck in the wantrepreneur stage:

    1. You find yourself fearful to either start your business or scale it to the next phase or the next big step. The best way to start conquering your fear is to write down the things that you're fearful of if you were to start your business or if you are deciding to take your business to the next level.
    2. You fear being judged by others. It’s important to understand that the reason they have something to say about you is that they're projecting their own insecurities about starting a business on you or they don’t have the ability to help you with this path in life that you've decided to take.
    3. You don’t know where to start. Do the right thing by seeking out podcasts and YouTube videos, mentors, and other resources to help you expedite your trajectory toward your goal.
    4. You lack capital or funding. Start your business with your own money first. Don't borrow money from others to experiment because you should be confident enough to use your own money to start.

Episode 112 | Don't Burn the Boats Right Away But Start the Side Hustle

Episode 112 | Don't Burn the Boats Right Away But Start the Side Hustle

Many of us mistakenly believe that starting a side hustle while juggling a nine-to-five job is impossible and that we cannot successfully manage both responsibilities at the same time. It is not necessary to burn the boats right away. Keeping your nine-to-five is vital, not just for supporting your business but also as a safety net in case your side hustle or business fails. It's better to have a side hustle than to jump all in when starting a business.

Let me share with you why you start the side hustle:

    1. Side hustles give you an extra income stream different from the one you get from your 9 to 5 job. Hence, even if you run into difficulties with your job, you won't completely lose your source of income.
    2.  A side hustle will give you extra income to supplement your income as the cost of living has increased substantially!
    3. Start a side business in an area that piques your interest. You are given the opportunity to do something that brings you joy while also continuously relying on your main source of financial support. The extra income that you earned from a side hustle is just a bonus!

Episode 111 | The Real Entrepreneurial Journey - 2 Steps Forward 1 Step Back

Episode 111 | The Real Entrepreneurial Journey - 2 Steps Forward 1 Step Back

Progress is not always linear; there are times when we need to step back before striving again. Setbacks are a natural part of the process of our success. We need to grow, learn, and improve. So my mantra has always been "Two Steps Forward One Step Back." But how do I define this in the context of business?

    1. This mantra sets realistic expectations and maintains a mindset of making room for improvement.
    2. It helps in navigating the ups and downs of business with grace and strength.
    3. It makes us realize that setbacks are okay. Remember, business is a marathon, not a sprint. Take time to pace yourself and revel in the journey.

Episode 110 | How to Launch a Successful Day [My 3 Strategies]

Episode 110 | How to Launch a Successful Day [My 3 Strategies]

Passion is not enough in achieving success. You also need a productive mindset to help you set goals. But how do we cultivate that productive mindset? Let me share with you three strategies that can help in establishing success and optimizing our productivity.

    1. Set up the night before. Planning the night before can help create a systemic routine for our day-to-day needs. When we plan ahead, we ensure that the things we need are ready and in place. Even the smallest details that are often overlooked can be properly attended by planning the night before.

    2. Identify your priority to-do list and categorize what should be done for the day and the others that can be accomplished for the succeeding days. You cannot finish everything within a day, so it’s important to also schedule your tasks and see which can be accomplished in a short period of time and which needs more thorough work.

    3. Assess the day you just had. Looking back on how your day went helps you to see an overview of the completed and missed tasks from your to-do list. This allows you to review your performance for the day and see what needs to be improved. Also, you may work on rescheduling your missed tasks and do the necessary adjustments needed to accomplish all your deliverables.

Episode 109 | Why Entrepreneurs Give Up

Episode 109 | Why Entrepreneurs Give Up

What are a few common pitfalls for entrepreneurs and how can you avoid them!

    1. Not Enough Money! Many first-time entrepreneurs will give up as they need capital to start their business and then a steady income to manage daily expenses.  My suggestion is not to quit your stable income right away and start your business as a side hustle. I personally started Also Sophia.

    2. Afraid of Competition! Many quit or never start their business because they are scared of other businesses as competition. If you can reframe competition in business as a great way for you to refine your product or service to meet the challenge to solve your customer’s problem better than any other business, then business competition can be seen as a game. This will help improve the products offered by businesses and prevent monopolies.

    3. Afraid of Failure! Many do not start to give up as they are afraid to fail. If you can reframe to look at “failures” as lessons. Then, make sure you assess the “failure”. Was the goal too unrealistic and do you need a few smaller goals before the big goal? Or did you not set yourself up for success with resources? Look analytically at the “failure” and draw out the lessons.

    4. No Support! Feeling alone on the entrepreneurship journey can make it harder to navigate all the potential ups and downs if you do not have a supportive family or community. My suggestion is to find a group of like-minded individuals who will understand your drive to pursue a business. Remember, it may not be fair to your family and friends to support you if they do not have any experience in business and may feel overwhelmed by the risk. Remember, if you have a vision for your business, you have everything in your power to make it happen. And no one else can really tell you otherwise!

Increasing a company’s bottom line is arguably the most important metric!

Decreasing your Customer Acquisition Costs (CAC).... not rate (we want to increase the acquisition rate)  is one great way of increasing profits! Here are the strategies that have worked for our product business.

Here are a few ways to reduce your CAC:

    1. Know the psychology of your customer aka the psychographics so you can make the best product that will solve the problem for your customer.
    2. Create an influencer marketing campaign and provide a culture where your customer will share how they are using your products! Now you will get in front of your customer and help increase motivate a purchase.

Episode 107 | How to Start 2023 with Successful Goal Setting

Episode 107 | How to Start 2023 with Successful Goal Setting

It’s January 2023 and it’s time to talk about goal setting! What is the significance to January 1st? It’s just any other date, right? Yes.. it is … but culturally, we have used the first of January as a starting point to frame our goals. Here are a few tips on how to make sure you set your goals up for success in 2023!

    1. Look to your North Star to guide you in your goal setting. What is the real reason you have committed to keeping your goal? It is helpful to align your goal with something other than money alone. Aligning your goal to an external cause will help keep you inspired to push forward when goals take longer to accomplish.
    2. Connect your goal to an already established routine. For example, if you want to take daily walks in 2023, the act of putting on your running shoes after your last daily meeting will help you move towards that goal of daily walks. Breaking down your goals into tangible single steps like putting on your running shoes, will help you move towards your goal. No schedule your small bit size steps into your day to bring you even closer to executing your goal!
    3. You will have days when you will need a break and may miss a day. Be kind to yourself and let yourself have some grace BUT get back on track! Tap into your North Star again and this will help propel you back into action. You should not let “getting off track” as an excuse to give up!

Episode 106 | Business Takes Patience [ 3 Tips to Help You in Your Business Journey]

Episode 106 | Business Takes Patience [ 3 Tips to Help You in Your Business Journey]

Business takes patience and the “get rich quick” mantras do not work. Sorry…even if you make a quick win, can you replicate it again? Remember business may look easier on the surface than many would like to admit to!

Here are a few tips to get you on the right track to help build your patience as you march through the entrepreneurial journey and not give up!

    1. Set expectations with yourself that the goal you have in mind might take longer to accomplish that you had previously thought. Remember, there are no “get rich quick” options and if someone is selling this rhetoric, they are likely trying to “get rich quick” off of you!
    2. Ask for help and delegate out tasks so you will not burn out on your entrepreneurial journey. Setting expectations with others as well, regarding delegated acts or boundaries will also help prevent you from burnout! This also applies to anyone who is working a traditional 9-5 too! How to Prioritize My To-Do List [AND Reduce The OVERWHELM]
    3.  Tell those that you trust your big goals so you hold yourself accountable and start making micro steps consistently. I share an example from my personal story of telling close family and friends that I was intentional with our first product line getting into Walmart.

Episode 105 | Why You SHOULD Keep Your 9 to 5! [Why I Didn't Quit My Day Job Right Away]

Episode 105 | Why You SHOULD Keep Your 9 to 5! [Why I Didn't Quit My Day Job Right Away]

You do not need to quit your 9 to 5 and it is ok to complete a side hustle! Do you agree or disagree?

Why do I believe this? Well…

    1. Running a business is like completing a series of experiments. You do not know what will work and what will not work out. By allowing yourself to continue with your contingency plan of the 9 to 5, you are allowing yourself the opportunity to experiment with what you like and what you dislike, what will work and what will not work, without feeling too overwhelmed and stressed. A founder example is Phil Knight who owned and founded Nike. Go grab the book by Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike from Audible.
    2. Having a 9 to 5 job will allow you a stable income so you have less stress at the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey regarding cash flow. The reduced stress will allow you to become more creative in your business, as stress naturally hinders creativity and innovation. A stable income will also allow you to provide for your family and reduce the guilt that comes along for many when starting a new business.
    3. Working a 9 to 5 at the beginning stages of your side hustle will allow for decisions based on logic versus emotions, as cash flow will be more stable personally. You will not take on clients and customers that you did not hope for, and only provide products and services for your most ideal clients and customers.

If you can manage your time and energy, you can definitely start a side hustle while working 9 to 5 and still have time for family and friends! And then, when you’re ready and you know your side hustle can become the real deal… then burn the boats and jump all in!!

Episode 104 | How I Ensure a Productive Day! [Tips and Tricks]

Hit Follow, Subscribe, and the Bell so you don’t miss a thing!

With so many dependents, time management is a skill that you can master!

As many of you know, I have a booming side hustle Also Sophia LTD (on Walmart shelves currently), working my 9-5 currently and yes, I am a MOM! I’m not telling you all of this to brag, but to give you context on why time management is so important for me to manage the time in my day.

Here are my best tips that you can put into action!

    1. Choose the best time to complete your deliverables that will align with your, energy level, attention, and creativity. For example, I will do high-priority deliverables that require a high level of attention between the hours of 10 am to 12 pm when my attention and energy are at the peak of the day. Segmenting your day will help you not only manage your time but also your energy level so you make the most out of the time that you have! “Remember, you own your calendar, your calendar doesn’t own you”.
    2. Segment the days of your week. Chuck out your daily theme for the day of the week to help you get into the daily flow. For those who work from home, this would help you manage the time on the road, by completing all in-person meetings in one day (if possible). For example, I have all external community meetings on Thursdays and all internal meetings on Tuesdays and Fridays. This leaves Mondays and Wednesdays as office/catch-up days.
    3. Do a Daily Shut Down, where you close your browser tabs, organize files, and take your inbox to ZERO! This will help you segment your day so your “work life” doesn’t run into your Home Life or social calendar. If there is an item that is not completed or a to-do that didn’t get completed, I schedule time for this item into my calendar!

Episode 103 | How to Prep Your Business for the Recession [4 Must-Dos]

Episode 103 | How to Prep Your Business for the Recession [4 Must-Dos]

How are you going to prevent your business from going under during the recession?

This episode will provide you with 4 tips that you can do today to help you float during the recession and not close your business doors!

    1. Product-Based Business - Look at cost of each product and the cost of goods (COG) to see if you can reduce these costs.  For our service-based business- look at different contracts and see if you can bring a few services in-house that you might be outsourcing currently
    2. If you have a novel service or product, you can consider increasing the price of the product to increase the profit as right now you may have customer tolerance for increased prices due to inflation.
    3. Audit your subscriptions and delete unused subscriptions or downgrade your subscriptions. Do this for your business and personal as well!
    4. Follow the Predo’s Principle! A small amount of your input will result in a larger amount of your output! This means 20% of your products or services will lead to 80% of your profits. Figure out the most profitable products and spend your attention elevating those products and liquidate or stop offering the rest! For more on increasing profits in your business, you can head to episode 85 where we speak about how to create a brand that will lead to longer customer lifetime value https://www.bossitclub.com/85

Episode 102 | Mental Health and Business [ The 3C's You Need to Know]

Episode 102 | Mental Health and Business [ The 3C's You Need to Know]

Today let’s chat about the 3 C’s that every business owner should possess to better your mental health.

1st C - Consistency: It will take time to reach your goals and it is unlikely that you will find success overnight. If you do find success overnight, you are one of the few that will! Being consistent will allow you the time required to build a brand and community around your offer and this will result in better business success! One great strategy for accomplishing consistency is to establish small actionable goals.

2nd C - Curiosity: If you have the capacity to be curious about your business, you will be able to create and innovate in your business. Curiosity will also allow you to be more open-minded and willing to experiment. You will need to innovate in your business for your business to continue to evolve and level up so curiosity is essential!

3rd C - Compassion: Being compassionate towards yourselves and others is essential for your mental health. You will make mistakes in business and if you can remind yourself that you are human, not only will you feel at ease to take risks and show up consistently, your mental health will be stronger!

Episode 101 | CEO Characteristics [GOOD to GREAT]

Episode 101 | CEO Characteristics [GOOD to GREAT]

Time to get serious about leading your company.

Let’s speak about what a CEO is and then I’ll provide you with a few tips to take your mindset and execution to the next level as a CEO.

If you need more information regarding what is Governance and reporting to a board, you can check out this great article and video for a fast tutorial.

    Tip 1- Learn to Delegate!

If you want more information on delegation you can check out episode 84 at bossitclub.com/84. In Also Sophia, my product-based company, I delegated out social media and product fulfillment early to ensure I had the energy and time to create and lead the company!

Tip 2 - Learn to take Risks!

You will be faced with many challenges while leading your business so you must be comfortable with the concept of taking on risks and trying no ideas out to manage the challenges. This is a business essential! Again with Also Sophia, I started taking on risks like taking on a Purchase Order for Walmart in our first 12 months. This risk was essential to growing our business.

Tip 3 - Exercise Your Confidence

Confidence is essential! Think about the internal dialogue that may be preventing you from your full expression of ourself. What is holding you back? Confidence is a very large topic and takes years of work. If you can fully embrace your confidence, there will be no stopping you from attaining your big goals!

If you have any questions… leave them in the comments on Youtube below the video or contact us on Instagram @bossitclub

Let’s speak about 2022 and our Walmart Launch onto the big shelf!

A few weeks ago a shared with you what happened in 2020 and 2021 when we launched our products on Walmart shelves in the middle of the pandemic. And let’s just say… it did not go as planned. The lockdown interrupted selling and we had to quickly pivot our sales strategy. If you missed these episodes, you can click the links below to catch each

    What happened in 2020

    What happened in 2021

Luckily 2022 was a little different and we didn’t have any COVID-related shopping restrictions!

Here are a few lessons I learned when working with a large retailer.

    1. Make sure you have a great promotion plan to help move the product off the shelf.
    2. Complete a postmortem or analysis of the launch or selling season. Ensure you document what worked and what didn’t work.
    3. Expect and plan for delays especially if you are shipping products from overseas. Even if you’re a service-based business and launching a new program, always ensure you are planning for delays and leaving “contingency” time aside.

Episode 97 | How to Prioritize My To-Do List [AND Reduce The OVERWHELM]

How do you manage your to-do list? Here are my best-kept secrets to keeping on top of my priorities stress-free and with less overwhelm!

I follow the 4D method for productivity and funny enough when I looked for more information regarding the 4D Productivity Method, I didn’t find much! Gathering this information from great productivity gurus, David Allen’s Book Getting Things Done, I’ve put my own personal spin so we all can relate to our daily demands!

Grab the book here so you can dive into the lessons even more!
    Here’s the link:
    https://amzn.to/3CpM3Fn

    1. Start with a Brain Dump Daily! Get everything out of your head and onto the paper.
    2. Next, prioritize the Brain Dump and assign one of the 4Ds.

    What are the 4Ds?

    1. Do It - you need to do the To-Do so put it into your schedule or calendar. Schedule the task at the time you are the most productive!
    2. Delegate It - you will need to give a few tasks to others so they can manage it
    3. Deferring The Action- if you don’t have time to finish the task or item, then place the item in a Parking Lot
    4. Delete It - have a look at the To-do List and ensure that everything on that list is still required. Do you need to do everything still?

Pro Tip- Stay until the end to catch this one!!

Episode 95 | How to Stop Procrastinating

Episode 95 | How to Stop Procrastinating

    How do you stop procrastinating?

There are two main reasons you could be procrastinating:

    1. The task is too easy and you are actually getting bored.
    2. The task is too complex and it’s causing you to feel anxious.

I have a few tricks to prevent procrastination in both situations.

If you are bored of the task, go ahead and couple it with something you love to do. For me, I will listen to a podcast or music and complete task such as laundry.

For a complex task, here are a few strategies you can try:

    1. Always start with the Minimum Viable Action - we chat about James Clear's book Atomic Habit which does explain this concept very well.
    2. Use the SMART Goal method  -Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relatable, and timely.  - check out more episodes regarding preventing procrastinating A Few of My Scheduling Life Hacks!
    3. Start a task for only 5 minutes and see if you can get into a “flow state”
    4. Reframe the task as a challenge rather than an obstacle

Now tell us in the comments… which 4 strategies will you use first to get out of the habit of procrastinating?

Remember, Make a Plan and Take Action and YES you can have it all!
