How Colombia Became An Important Player in the Fight Against Climate Change - Meg Symington_WWF

How Colombia Became An Important Player in the Fight Against Climate Change - Meg Symington_WWF

The Amazons are the largest rainforest in the world spanning 8 countries and comprising about 40% of all remaining rainforests in the entire world. New species are still being discovered at least once a week, and approximately 300 different indigenous groups call the Amazon their home.

Meg Symington, World Wildlife Foundation Managing Director for the Amazon project shares how they are working to keep a functional ecosystem that provides benefits to people and nature over the long term.

Born at the Conference of the Parties for the Climate Change Treaty in Paris in 2015, the Heritage Colombia Project is an ambitious PFP initiative for the next 20+ years to ensure the conversation of 20 million hectares (1 hectare = 100 acres) of natural areas by increasing the number of protected areas, improving management, and supporting productive activities in areas that connect these important protected regions.

Phase 1 is currently underway with a goal to have 14 million hectares of protected areas and corridors and five landscape mosaics in the Amazon. They are working to raise $100 million in donor funding which will be matched by the Government of Colombia.

The Heritage Colombia Project is establishing the framework to apply this model in other countries of the Amazon and beyond.

What Ice Can Tell Us About Climate Change - Lonnie Thompson_Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center

What Ice Can Tell Us About Climate Change - Lonnie Thompson_Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center

For over 40 years, distinguished university professor and senior research scientist, Lonnie Thompson, has been collecting ice to analyze the effects of climate change. He’s led 64 expeditions conducting ice core drilling programs in 16 countries.

Lonnie shares how he first became interested in studying ice, and how his early failure led to the development of the first solar-powered drilling equipment launching a whole new area of research. The results of these studies have been published in more than 260 articles.

The history of the earth’s climate is recorded in glaciers around the world, sums up what is happening in the environment, and allows us the opportunity to respond to what we are seeing. By studying the data in the ice core, we are able to understand data through the course of time, long before humans were around to record it.

This intriguing interview will leave you rethinking what you thought you knew about ice!

Climate Week NYC 2021: Getting It Done

Climate Week NYC 2021: Getting It Done

Global business and government leaders have announced ambitious climate commitments, laying out targets with fast approaching end dates. ‘Net Zero’ will define our politics and economies for decades to come, from energy to transport, industry to food; the opportunities are endless, and the risks of inaction are profound.

But despite our ambitions and actions so far, despite the science setting us targets, and knowing we must halve emissions by 2030, all trajectories suggest we are vastly off track to meet all the commitments made. We need greater leadership in this Climate Decade.

Many of the technologies, the tools and the pathways to deliver these targets are available, right now. Growth in the green economy will continue to outpace traditional sectors and we can rebalance our relationship with nature, but only if governments take urgent policy decisions and greater business action starts today.

The Hub Live’s opening flagship event will explore what needs to happen now to make 2030 and 2050 commitments a reality. How do we get back on track, what critical policy interventions, technology development and investment decisions must converge, and when do key climate millstones need to be hit across the Climate Decade to Get It Done?

Climate Week NYC 2021: Driving Co-Benefits For Climate And Health

Climate Week NYC 2021: Driving Co-Benefits For Climate And Health

A healthy planet is the foundation for a healthy global population, and human health cannot be advanced without healthy planetary systems such as fresh water, clean air and a stable climate. The direct yearly financial costs of degrading natural systems are predicted to be US$2-4 billion by 2030. And yet, there is currently a lack of guidance for businesses on how to leverage their strategies in a way that simultaneously accelerates change across both climate change and public health.

To bridge this gap, Forum for the Future, in collaboration with Walgreen Boots Alliance, GSK Consumer Healthcare and Bupa has over 2020-21 explored the interconnection of these critical challenges and how businesses can take action. Join this event to explore:

    • What are the interconnections of climate and health? How might they strengthen in the 2020s?
    • How can businesses deliver positive outcomes for both issues through supply chain strategies, products and services, advocacy, and partnerships?
    • What opportunities exist for cross-sector collaboration to consider how to drive co-benefits on two of today’s biggest global challenges?

    Speakers include:

    • Jane Burston, CEO, Clean Air Fund
    • Richard Ellis, VP, Corporate Social Responsibility, Walgreen Boots Alliance
    • Dr Paula Franklin, Chief Medical Officer, Bupa

Climate Week NYC 2021: Fast Tracking Finance

The renewed US domestic climate agenda will drive demand for green innovation and investments with new approaches to scaling up finance for climate-aligned sectors and infrastructure. According to a recent Princeton University study, Net Zero America, in order for the United States to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions economy-wide by 2050 it would require at least $2.5 trillion in upfront additional capital investment over the next decade. Yet, the cost for inaction and the impact on the environment, human health and the economy is immeasurable. What the broader financial community does now will help determine the fate of the planet on which humanity relies. This session will explore the innovations and pathways needed for the financial system to accelerate investments toward a zero-carbon economy.

The Conservative Answer to Climate Change - Bob Inglis_republicEn

The Conservative Answer to Climate Change - Bob Inglis_republicEn

Rep Bob Inglis shares his journey from climate disputer to climate change activist. Following a science committee trip to Australia, he had a spiritual awakening moving him to consciously loving God and loving people and leaving the world a better place for future generations. Upon his return, he introduced the Raise Wages Cut Carbon Act of 2009. Unfortunately, the act was defeated but his desire to continue the conversation was not.

Bob provides insight into how both sides of the aisle can come together to create bipartisan action that is durable. He notes that most people will not accept a problem unless they think it has a solution. As such, he believes it is important to identify solutions that are directly connected to people’s values.
