Coping 101: Grassroots Wellness w/ Black Coffee NW

When barriers exist that limit access to vital community resources, we can wait for the system to fix itself - or we can be the solution. Black Coffee NW in Shoreline, WA is actively breaking down as many barriers as cups of coffee are sold in their gathering space just a few miles north of Seattle. The Black-owned, family-owned organization provides local youth with job training, free mental health services, and all sorts of community resources. In this episode our student hosts are joined by Diana Muuru and Haben Haileslassie - two of Black Coffee NW's Youth Program Directors - as they discuss their experience on the frontlines of wellness activism in Seattle's Black and African-immigrant communities.

Coping 101: Grooving for Good w/ Alex Wagner

Coping 101: Grooving for Good w/ Alex Wagner
"Therapy is the best thing in the world that you can do for yourself. In my dream world, everyone would have a check-in with a therapist once a week. It doesn't just have to be in the moments when things are out of control. Therapy helps you build your toolbox, like an outside contractor working with you, giving you objective tools that other people have used before, helping you observe your life in a different way from an outside perspective and reframe things."

In this episode, musician and mental health advocate Alex Wagner shares countless insights and mindfulness practices that have steered his path of recovery from bipolar disorder to leading Grooving for Good, a nonprofit organization that fosters community mental wellness and resilience through art and music. Grooving for Good hosts monthly events that not only feature emotional intelligence workshops, restorative practices, and bonding activities, but also platform a diverse range of artists, DJs, musicians, and thought leaders in an inclusive nightclub setting. In addition to running Grooving for Good, Wagner authors "BLOOM", a mental health column for SPIN IMPACT, works as crisis counselor for Crisis Text Line and produces music under the name ASW (A Single Wave).
