Chris James of The Burrito Brothers talks about their new album (hint, it's holiday themed!), the band's legacy, and more.

Chris James of The Burrito Brothers talks about their new album (hint, it's holiday themed!), the band's legacy, and more.

The band was formed in 1968 in Los Angeles as The Flying Burrito Brothers.  Its classic lineup featured country rock pioneer, the late Gram Parsons, and former founding Byrds members bassist Chris Hillman and drummer Michael Clarke, along with eventual original Eagles member Bernie Leadon on lead guitar and pedal steel guitar genius Sneaky Pete Kleinow.

The band’s first two albums, The Gilded Palace of Sin (which Rolling Stone listed at number 192 on its list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time) and Burrito Deluxe, remain highly influential, acclaimed works which helped put country-rock on the map.

Because Parsons and Keith Richards were good friends, Burrito Deluxe contains the first issued version of the Mick Jagger/Keith Richards-written song "Wild Horses," released almost a year before the The Rolling Stones own take on it appeared on Sticky Fingers.

The band has churned through countless members over the years (including many ex-members who have attained success over the years on their own in big-name bands) but has continued to keep the Burritos name and legacy alive by touring and recording under various Burritos-styled names over the decades.

These days, the band, now based in Nashville, features Chris P. James (who’s been involved with the band since 2009), guitarist Steve Allen, Tony Paoletta on pedal steel and drummer Peter Young…all extremely talented musicians who love being involved with the band’s legacy and creating new music to keep that legacy alive.

The current lineup has continued for over a decade to carry the Burrito Brothers torch via the Christmas release, which features the band’s trademark tight ensemble playing, beautiful harmonies, excellent songwriting, and the ability to turn other artist’s songs into their own.

Buddy Whittington, Guitarist with Texas Scratch discusses long-awaited new album, life lessons, inspirations, and more

Buddy Whittington, Guitarist with Texas Scratch discusses long-awaited new album, life lessons, inspirations, and more

Texas Scratch is made up of three born-and-bred Texas guitarists – Jim Suhler from Dallas, Buddy Whittington from Fort Worth and Vince Converse from Houston.  This mighty threesome of big dog guitar slingers takes no prisoners when it comes to red-hot guitar performances, both live and in-studio.

This trio of six-string guitar beasts are accompanied on the album by drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Nathaniel Peterson, both fine musicians in their own right.

The band’s name derives from the term Texas scratch, which is a style of guitar picking (also known as the Carter Scratch) said to have originated by Mother Maybelle Carter back in 1927.

Their combined efforts have resulted in a debut album consisting of – obviously -  fiery, passionate guitar licks everywhere you turn, soaked in the blues and kicked in the ass by the blues-rock they all love to play.

George Heathco, Musician, and Composer discusses his unique composition methods, finding flow, and opens up about personal struggles in terms of creativity.

My good friend, George Heathco, a Houston based musician, and composer, and I catch up on his latest projects, how he deals with being stuck when composing, and getting real about imposter syndrome and taking charge of one's mental health.
A fantastic episode to listen to that is vital for anyone in the creative fields.

    Bio:
“His music is a bold synthesis of contemporary concert music, rock, jazz, and pop genres, and he asserts his indie business practices as unabashedly.” Arts and Culture

“Mr. Heathco is a solid guitarist, coaxing a wide variety of sounds and textures from his instrument…” Sequenza21

As a guitarist, composer, educator, and collaborator, Houston musician George Heathco has worked with a wide variety of artists, organizations, and schools. Equally at home in a diverse range of styles, the genre-hopping musician has played guitar with many of Houston’s leading music and theater organizations, local songwriters and rock/pop bands, and numerous churches and contemporary worship services. Formed in 1966, CREAM quickly became known for their explosive impromptu style – high-volume blues jamming, extended solos and flashy instrumental showmanship.
Widely thought of as the first supergroup, CREAM paved the way for many other music genres.
The project honors CREAM’s legacy with a 15-track tribute album and features Pete Brown and Ginger Baker plus an impressive roster of renowned musicians who knew, or were inspired by the iconic supergroup including Joe Bonamassa, Deborah Bonham, Malcolm Bruce, Peter Bullick, Nathan James, Bernie Marsden, Maggie Bell, Rob Cass, Clem Clempson, Paul Rodgers and Bobby Rush.
There were also invaluable musical contributions from Cheryl Alleyne, Winston Blissett, Moreno Buttinar, Abass Dodoo, John Donaldson, Pee Wee Ellis, Mo Foster, Neil Murray, Mo Nazam, Tony Remy, and Frank Tontoh.
