Ep 125 Chris Padavana, From owner of a great bike shop to retired and loving it.

Chris Padavana former owner of Eden Bicycles is back for his third appearance on the show. We talk about the factors that led up to his decision to sell the shop right as the covid  pandemic was coming to a close and how he got out at the best possible time as the market has really taken a turn since he has been out of the industry.  Bicycle Retail is challenging for many reasons staffing, long hours, shrinking market, company stores, online sales, etc.. It seems like the Independent Bicycle Retailer (IBR) is being attacked from all angles, but it is not all doom and gloom. We all agree that even with all of the challenges there will always be solid demand for a quality IBR! We also touch on retired life, Chris seems to be adapting to it nicely and he has Dave and I a little Jealous ;) Ahh maybe one day but neither of us can see that just yet.  Enjoy!

Ep 122 Charlie Kelly Mountain Bike Pioneer and Author

Ep 122 Charlie Kelly Mountain Bike Pioneer and Author

This was a special one, getting the chance to chat with one of the original creators of what would eventually turn into the first mountain bike.  Charlie grew up in Marin County and started riding dirt trails on old beach cruisers with some of his friends, Joe Breeze, Gary Fisher, Alan Bonds, and Tom Ritchey to name a few. The beach cruisers would go thru some heavy modifications to make them work on a local trail that they affectionately referred to as Repack. (Named that because after descending the mountain you would have to repack your rear coaster brake hub with grease as it all got smoked out while trying to descend the trail.) The modified beach cruisers were called Klunkers. The Klunkers were 30's and 40's Schwinn, Excelsior, Colson, etc. cruiser frames that were stretched wide to accommodate gears and drum brakes, forks were reenforced with truss rods, and of course they were stuffing knobby tires on the bikes. We cover some of this and many other elements to Charlie Kelly's prolific career that included starting the first timed Downhill Mountain Bike race, he would later go on to publish the Fat Tire Flyer magazine and help to establish Norba (National Off Road Bike Association) but Perhaps most significantly he authored the book the Fat Tire Flyer. The full history of the evolution of the mountain bike. If you have not read this book yet, I strongly recommend it! It is a fantastic tale of how we got to where we are today with the mountain bike. Charlie truly has the magic touch. Hope you enjoy this one as much as we did.

In this episode we meet up with Power Mom Nicole Nicolay. She is the founder of the Real Estate company Love Livermore and also an active Agent, additionally she is a top level Triathlete. How does she do it? So much responsibility and so much training that needs to be done. Nicole is a great example of someone that sets goals and works hard to achieve them. She set a goal of racing at the Kona Ironman World Championships 10 years ago and she just completed it. An amazing accomplishment with all of the other things going on in her life. Well ok sometimes scheduled guests have situations that require a reschedule and that was the case with todays podcast so Dave and I break down how last weeks guest Matt Fitzgerald books have impacted us and our approach to riding, racing, and training in general. We nerd out a little on individual performance and this podcast was a complete wing it scenario.. Hope you enjoy it but more than anything else I hope you are able to read or listen to the book 'How bad do you want it" By Matt Fitzgerald as weel as some of his other titles.

We really hope you enjoy this one as much as we did! Matt is an incredible story teller and Author! Dave and I were only recently made aware of Matt and his book "How Bad do You want it" We both consumed it very quickly and it has had a huge impact on both of us. Please do yourself a favor and check this book out as well as some of Matt's other books while you are at it.
