Julian Glencross McCartney - Glencross Furniture

Today we sit down with one of my favourite Melbourne based furniture makers, Mr Julian Glencross McCartney.

Motivated by the family history of his great-great-grandfather Charles Glencross: a coach builder; Julian Glencross McCartney adopted his middle name as the moniker for his business.

Glencross Furniture operates independently from its Melbourne-based workshop, specialising in high quality custom made timber furniture and design objects.

The design styles are varied, inspired by the ever-changing functional and aesthetic elements of residential, commercial and natural environments. Key to his work is a keen eye for proportion & detail, and a carefully considered understanding of materials. The result is a handcrafted, tactile finish.

We had such a fantastic time chatting and I hope you enjoy listening!

    David Beeman from Vampt Vintage

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to episode 9 of dealing in design

I have canned the usual intro because this week we have a lonnnggg episode but don’t let that turn you off, let get right into it.

I really hope you enjoyed lasts weeks episode with Eric Appel from New York.

This week we are in Sydney, at Vampt Vintage with David Beeman.

David is a force of nature, he is charming and charismatic, and he has the insane ability to draw you into his world. He is always full of energy around the clock, he is the guy you can shoot messages or call anytime and no matter what he gets back to you instantly.

Initially we were going to interview both Dave and Maxine Beeman but plans changed and that all good but David really wanted Maxine to be involved because they have done everything together from the start 17 years ago. So I just wanted to point out and make it clear that we are only sitting down with one half of the Vampt Vintage founders and Im so thankful for their time and hospitality

In this interview we also chat all things interior styling with Vampt Vintage super stylist and Milkman ambassador Brendan Clark. Check him out at BJC_creative on the gram.

We also have a round the table chat with Joe Mifsood who has been a prolific dealer in Sydney since the 1980s

He was a dealer to the dealers and He is known as the man who can find you anything.

Super interesting and super insightful. Check him out at Mifsud_J on the Gram that’s MITSUD_J

Alright back to Dave and Vampt Vintage.

We recorded this in their mind-blowing showroom on Elizabeth St Surrey Hills and it was pumping. People everywhere! It was great to see! So don’t be alarmed if you hear some footsteps or chairs being pushed and pulled around by customers in the background.

That’s the Vampt Vintage Vibe, the shop has a super cool feel and such a welcoming culture.

Without further ado I hope you enjoy the wide ranging conversation with David Beeman, Joe Mitsud and Brendan Clark.

    Ok that’s it. Enjoy

Nicholas Mesiano from Nicholas & Alistair

Nicholas Mesiano from Nicholas & Alistair

This week our Guest is Nicholas Mesiano from Nicholas & Alistair

Nicholas & Alistair is a stunning gallery in Abbottsford retailing original 20th-century decorative objects and applied arts, specializing in the rarer examples of European design. Ok, when I say stunning, I mean their showroom is STUNNING! If you have a chance, do yourself a favour and visit 387 Johnston Street, honestly just go now! Nicholas and Alister must have one of the most impressive collections, it is just one iconic 20th Century Designer after another!

I thoroughly enjoyed recording this episode, Nicholas' story is truly fascinating! After years working in advertising, Nicholas resigned without a plan and began selling his own furniture to pay his bills! Once he sold most of his belongings he began buying and selling at markets, 25 years later he and his partner Alistair are at the pinnacle of Melbourne's 20th Century Design scene, with one of the most jaw-dropping collections in town.

I hope you enjoy this interesting and wide-ranging conversation with all round great guy, and one of Melbourne's Premier 20th Century Design Dealers, Nicholas Mesiano.

    Evan Crofton Bradhurst From Apologue

    Evan Crofton Bradhurst From Apologue

Our fifth guest for the season is one of my favorite people in the Melbourne antique scene!

Welcome, Evan Crofton Bradhurst from Apologue in Fitzroy North.. After leaving school and working as a graphic designer, Evan turned his side hustle of selling antiques into a full-time reality and has now been dealing in decorative arts for 12 years.

Apologue is a beautiful little shop filled with eclectic beauty! Evan's collection is a handsome mix of English, French, Asian and African decorative and applied arts. I was drawn to Apologue because it isn't your run of the mill antique store, Evan makes brave furnishing choices and utilizing a vast array of materials and mediums.

We recorded this episode over two separate sessions due to a clashing calendar, so I sincerely hope you enjoy listening to this wide-ranging conversation as much we enjoyed recording it!

    Piero Gesualdi from Mondopiero

    Piero Gesualdi from Mondopiero

Yep, our guest this week is Piero Paolo Gesualdi from Mondopiero in Brunswick Street Fitzroy. Take one step through the double doors of this double story building and you are submerged in a mix of design and detail. Make no mistake you have set foot into Piero's World, and it does not disappoint!

Mondopiero evokes the surroundings of a lifetime dedicated to the appreciation and creation of beautiful things; showcasing craftsmanship, artisanal skill, design and the whisper of a refined sense of taste.

I can't think of anyone else in the Melbourne design scene as interesting as Piero. He has done it all, from owning restaurants and clubs to importing and owning fashion labels, not to mention he is an architect! He really is an entrepreneur, a super stylish Italian entrepreneur!

In this wide-ranging conversation, Piero explains why he left architecture at RMIT to go to India and we find out how Piero managed to be the first person to introduce cutting-edge international luxury fashion labels such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, Giorgio Armani, Kenzo and Comme de Garçons into the Australian market.
