“Pivoting is not the end of the disruption process, but the next leg of your journey”.

David Ronsen of Acela, Inc. knows this concept all too well as he continues to innovate in the world of emergency response.

David has worked in or adjacent to emergency response for three decades.

As such, he has pivoted specialties many times. From working as a firefighter to designing and constructing vehicles for firefighting, mining, oil, and gas, and later working with the VA during the COVID-19 Pandemic to construct and distribute morgue trailers, David says the importance of pivoting and reinventing yourself is key to continued success in any field, let alone Emergency Management and response.

In this episode, David talks about how he developed, constructed, and distributed nearly 50 morgue trailers in just over a month during the pandemic. He also relates his journey from working on the frontlines to moving to contract work and later starting his own company, Acela, Inc.

“Don’t let a good crisis go to waste.”

While the origin of this quote continues to be debated, leadership at JetBlue Airlines took this advice and “flew” with it during the early years of the company.

During the tumultuous aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, JetBlue was a two-year-old company, trying to make a name for itself in the competitive airline industry. While the task of remaining in business seemed daunting for even the most established carriers, the upstart JetBlue was one of the only airlines that remained profitable in the months after.

Penny Neferis remembers that time well. As JetBlue’s Director of Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, and Emergency Response, and one of its longest-tenured employees, Penny has seen the company “take off” from the ground up.

In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, she talks about how the lessons learned in the aftermath of 9/11 helped lay the foundation for the success story that JetBlue is today.
She also discusses how “taking care of your own” is key to business continuity in times of emergency, and talks more about how the industry as a whole continues to evolve its readiness protocols.

Whether it’s earthquakes and wildfires on the west coast, tornadoes on the plains, tropical storms and hurricanes in the south, or major snowstorms in the northeast, Emergency Managers have to be ready for a variety of disaster scenarios depending on where they are located. However, while the locations and the type of disasters vary, the principles of readiness, mitigation, and response are pretty universal.

This week’s guest on the Disaster Tough Podcast, Shad Ahmed knows this well. While Shad currently serves as the Director of the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM), his previous experience working with a variety of agencies on the east coast, namely the City of Lowell and Town of Windham in Massachusetts.

In this episode, Shad and host John Scardena discuss the differences and similarities between Emergency Management on the east and west coasts, along with how to build a strong culture of readiness and response at the local level.

The podcast emphasizes several key points about prioritizing tasks, especially in the context of emergency management:
    1. Distinction between Urgent and Important Tasks: It's crucial to differentiate between tasks that are urgent and those that are important. The long-term impact of a task should be a guiding factor in determining its importance.
    2. Life Saving and Sustaining Tasks as Priority: The most critical tasks are those that are life-saving and sustaining. These should always be prioritized above others.
    3. Scale for Measuring Impact: A practical approach is to use a scale of 1 to 10 to assess the impact of a task. Ask whether the task will have a positive impact in a week, a month, or a year. Tasks scoring below 5 should be re-evaluated for their necessity.
    4. Balancing Professional and Personal Priorities: There should be a balance between professional responsibilities and personal life. Important tasks in both areas should be identified and prioritized accordingly.
    5. Communicating with Supervisors: In a professional setting, it's essential to communicate with supervisors about one's preferences and priorities. This can help in aligning tasks with personal interests and strengths.
    6. Long-Term Planning: Long-term planning and focusing on goals that have significant future benefits can help in prioritizing tasks more effectively.
    7. Dealing with Scope Creep: In fields like emergency management, there's often a risk of 'scope creep' where everything seems urgent. Recognizing what's truly important can help in avoiding burnout and maintaining focus.
    8. Weighing Positive and Negative Impacts: When evaluating tasks, consider both the positive and negative long-term impacts. This helps in making more informed decisions about what to prioritize.
    9. Recognizing the Value of Failure: Understanding that it's okay for less important tasks to fail or be deprioritized can be crucial in effective time management.
    10. Seeking Peer Advice: In cases of uncertainty about prioritization, seeking advice from colleagues or industry peers can provide valuable insights.

In an insightful discussion, the importance of managing one's emotions during high-stress situations was emphasized. Highlighting the significance of effective communication strategies, the conversation shed light on how adults can navigate intense emotional outbreaks, ensuring clarity and effectiveness in their communication. The discussion then transitioned into the realm of media interactions, emphasizing the importance of having clear, digestible messages. A method of focusing on three key bullet points was recommended: 1) What you know, 2) What you don't know, and 3) What you're doing to find out. This framework not only keeps the communication concise but also allows for bridging back to core points when faced with potentially distracting or emotionally charged questions. Major

For most of you, it's been at least a month since you finished the necessary steps to send your kids back to school.

However, do you know what policies and procedures your child's school district has in place in the event of a disaster or emergency situation?

In this episode of the Disaster Tough Podcast, host John Scardena goes through three steps that school districts SHOULD be taking to make sure your children are safe and can focus more on learning, than what to do in case of emergency.

    They are as follows:

1.) GIS-Based Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA)
    2.) Reunification Plan
    3.) Mass-Notification Policy

There are five lessons from the Hawaii Wildfile response - Mass notifications matter, and they mattered in Maui Wildfires this summer.

    1. Sirens are just noise makers, don’t get stuck in the policy vs application issue
    2. Maybe the sirens could be heard indoors- at least try
    3. People are smarter than you think, if they see a raging fire, they will run away
    4. Doing nothing is unacceptable.
    5. The process of approval remove the fire chief or other tactical response from the equation.
    6. No more excuses. Innovate or get out of the way. Communication on an AAR is honestly just embarrassing for the field at this point. There’s enough tech and data out there to overcome every issue except incompetence.
