Doctoring Up Design was created to address your pain-points in the ever-changing world of design and architecture. This episode of Doctoring Up Design addresses the issues many homeowners face when trying to implement a true indoor outdoor lifestyle. They look to industry professionals to create the perfect outdoor space that is both functional and compliments the interior design. Many interior designers don’t get involved in projects that extend past the patio door and most landscape designers don’t cross that same threshold in the other direction leaving the potential for inconsistency in the overall design plan.

Our industry experts here include; Product expert, Garth Leavens, landscape designer, William Schnetz, architect, Michael Poirier and contractor, Jeremy Anseth.

For those in the industry, this is an educational and interactive workshop exploring new trends in outdoor living. Understanding new outdoor decking materials and technologies. You will Learn about specifying  outdoor decking for their clients, to increase their scope of knowledge, services, and potential for increased billings.

Episode 8: Double Vision for Outdoor Livin' | Adding Quality of Life Through Indoor Outdoor Spaces

Episode 8: Double Vision for Outdoor Livin' | Adding Quality of Life Through Indoor Outdoor Spaces

This is Doctoring Up Design is a lively, interactive lecture series presented by Design Hardware and held in their recently remodeled showroom on 3rd Street in Los Angeles. Doctoring Up Design was created to address your pain-points in the ever-changing world of design and architecture. This episode of the show is not about pain points so, call it a wellness check. The following conversation is all about taking a new look at pairing, not matching, pairing indoor and outdoor spaces for a truly cohesive and blended design no matter what style you’re going for.

California Style has been predicated on use of outdoor spaces to increase whole home enjoyment. This can be traced back to The Case Study House Program introduced by Arts & Architecture magazine editor, John Entenza. The most innovative designers today are drawing inspiration from the past and implementing modern technology, materials and new ways of thinking about unleashing the full potential of outdoor spaces to accentuate indoor living. Or, perhaps it’s the other way around. These are the ideas we will be exploring during this conversation.

In addition, you are going to hear some extraordinary ideas from Ariel Johnson of design firm Ariel Fox Design and and architect, Anthony Laney of Laney LA. These concepts include; Biophillic design, addressing negative spaces, material sourcing, new product research, spacial programming, creating spiritual spaces, stargazing decks and so much more. This is Double Vision for Outdoor Livin’, on Doctoring Up Design, presented by Design Hardware.

DESIGN HARDWARE’s recently remodeled and always evolving showroom is where you will find a gallery-style space with a thoughtful display of products purposefully positioned to allow unbridled exploration and discovery. Episode 5: Your Prescription for Supply Chain Pain | Best Practices and Sage Advice from Morley Builders

Episode 5: Your Prescription for Supply Chain Pain | Best Practices and Sage Advice from Morley Builders

Doctoring Up Design was created to address your pain-points in the ever-changing world of design and architecture. Over the past two years, there have been more than a few pain points to address.

Jennifer Connoly, senior project manager at Morley Builders, JD Crans, project management with Morley Builders and Nate Abramson, president of Design Hardware gathered for a conversation about the business, what has changed and what’s coming next. The following conversation is a deep dive into the challenges facing builders, architects and everyone looking to plan and complete a construction project in these….. If you were waiting for me to say “unprecedented times”, I’m not going to because we can’t keep calling these unprecedented. Yes, everyday is bringing new and unforeseen challenges. However, we have already seen tariffs and extreme cost increases. We have seen product shortages and supply chain disruptions. We have experience with severe weather and environmental conditions that disrupt or completely eliminate the ability to receive building and design materials. So, moving forward requires actions based on what we know combined with anticipatory planning. Topics covered include:

Project planning, staffing, budgeting, supply chain and cost controls, substituting materials, creating new product alternatives are discussed. You are also going to hear about how these experts view current and future changes in the industry. These changes require flexibility, specification adjustments, material substitutions and relying heavily on industry relationships.

Episode 4: Where's My Chair | A Designers Survival Guide to the Increasingly Unpredictable Supply Chain

Episode 4: Where's My Chair | A Designers Survival Guide to the Increasingly Unpredictable Supply Chain

Doctoring Up Design is a lively, interactive lecture series presented by Design Hardware and held in their recently remodeled showroom on 3rd Street in Los Angeles. This episode was recorded live from Design Hardware on June 24th, 2021 and it felt so good to be back, in person after so long. This conversation features designers Kristi Nelson, Kim Gordon and Krista Everage. This chat has been entitled, “Where’s My Chair?”, a cheeky way of addressing the current inventory supply chain that has been disrupted post pandemic due to a number of issue, not the least of which is the design business is booming and more product is being ordered from suppliers who don’t have the inventory in stock and shippers who can’t handle the volume. That being said, there are additional issues at play, and you are going to hear all about them along with many clever solutions and work arounds from our very gifted panel.

Kristi tells a story about a dispensary project that was highly designed with product being produced outside LA. Money was paid out and the business was waiting to open.  Product was delayed. But, because product was being manufactured in the US, it was still being produced. There were delays but not nearly as if it were being produced overseas. Kristi also looks to specify product that is physically closer to the project.

Kim and Krista discuss the benefits and pitfalls of the online search and specification process. There are challenges when it comes to size, scale and color. Computer and monitor settings affect true color and light reflection while size and scale cannot fully be determined on a screen alone. There is a greater need now for quality service, proper sales support and showroom servicing. With that comes a greater opportunity to respecify product and select accordingly for even the most demanding client.

Krista talks about “forever changes” in the business today. All three designers agree that there is a greater need to shift focus to locally specified, locally made from local materials and away from products made in China or any other country that isn’t practicing the highest standards in social justice, sustainably made and human rights. It appears there is a strong push for higher quality with a conscience.

These are just a few of the issues covered in this episode of Doctoring Up Design recorded at Design Hardware. I have said this many times, I believe it to be true… Architects and designers are futurists and provide amazing living spaces to suit the individual needs of their clients, even as those needs are rapidly changing. Thank you to all our participants, Kristi Nelson, Krista Everage and Kim Gordon. Thank you Michele Solomans, your expert for all things kitchen, bath, surfaces, hardware and flooring at Design Hardware. Thank you for listening.

Holistic and Wholistic Design | The Process Makes the Project

Holistic and Wholistic Design | The Process Makes the Project
I’m Josh Cooperman, Associate Publisher of Modern Luxury Interiors California Magazine and host of the Convo By Design Podcast. I hosted the SoCal Design Council at Design Hardware for a conversation with a group of industry professionals to discuss the idea of holistic design, that being an approach to the work that is wholeness of the project and a complete look at all elements both individually and as a whole as opposed to it being just a collection of elements that result in a completed project. And in this episode of Doctoring Up Design, you will hear about the findings from the gathering as well as amazing insights from the participants as well.

We met at Design Hardware on March 12th, 2020, the day that saw the coronavirus classified as a global pandemic. A day that would see most of the US population spending far more time at home in an effort to socially disengage and allow this virus to subside. With that the conversation took a decidedly different tone regarding wholistic design, adding a “w” to the word which changes the meaning entirely. This is more about the mind, body and spirit of those inhabiting the space and creating a healthy environment…And a stunning structure simultaneously. Let’s start with our participants:

Joe Spierer | Joseph Spierer Architects
    https://www.calarchitect.com

    Firoozeh Khorrami | FK Interiors
    https://fkinteriors.com

Jeffery M. Smith | JMS Design Associates

Kym Rodger | Kym Rodger Design

    Scott Utterstrom | XTEN Architecture
    http://xtenarchitecture.com

    Michele Solomons | Design Hardware
    https://www.designhardware.com

That completes this episode of Doctoring Up Design, recorded at Design Hardware on a rainy afternoon in March when it appeared that the world was caving in on itself. I have said this many times, I believe it to be true… Architects and designers are futurists and provide amazing living spaces to suit the individual needs of their clients, even as those needs are rapidly changing. Thank you to all our participants, Kym Rodger, Laura Muller, Firoozeh Khorrami, Scott Utterstrom, Jeffery M. Smith, Joe Spierer and Michele Solomons.
