Talking the Talk

Susan freestyles her thoughts in this episode about learning from the people in her bereavement groups, holding herself to the same actions that are used in her couples therapy work, and questioning the access people should have to life altering content. When she thinks about asking someone who lost the love of their life to find new activities or discoveries about themself, Susan also takes that challenge to expand her own life. Diving in Heart First

Susan talks about getting the sudden change that we experience when a new job, new romance or the loss of either. It’s wild when life changes overnight and we find ourself diving into projects, work or a relationship. The anticipation and possibilities can blur our vision, remove our boundaries, and create a quiet chaos that will slowly rise within. It might be 2 months or 6 months, but at some point we come up for air to realize that life as we knew it has not only changed, but we have too. Getting lost in this has both reward and disruption. The need to reconnect to ourself and recalibrate to feel grounded is essential, all while still showing up in our newly shaped life.

Saving the Lives of Dogs and Men with Mike Overlie

Susan welcomes Mike Overlie back to the show to talk about his new nonprofit SaveTwo.org that brings dogs and men together. Mike’s mission is “to save the lives of dogs and men, help them connect deeply to heal their wounds, and teach them skills to navigate this world and live better lives”. Mike has his own story of being saved by his dogs as he navigated various life challenges. He also will match men with dogs if they don’t already have one and has partnered with local shelters to completed the circle of saving dogs as well. Mike is an incredible person who understands that most men haven’t been given the emotional skills to handle the messiness that life throws at them. He works individually as well as in group form to help other men harness real confidence to live a happy life. Jenny Crozier: A Jill of All Trades

Please meet Jenny Crozier! Susan and Jenny sit down to talk about living life to the fullest, that it is never being too late to start something new, and how being from a family of tradesmen led her to a life of working in what has been traditionally known as a man’s field. Jenny’s deep sense of self, desire to work hard, get dirty and enable other women into a life of working in the trades is a fun story. Her day job is in trucking safety compliance , and co-owner of Crozier Construction. Jenny also spreads the word about careers in skill-based trades to young girls and women through the multiple organizations she belongs to as well as speaking at schools and trade camps. She informs young people that there are opportunities in hands-on work that is rewarding and satisfying. Her new book series Jenny’s A Jill of All Trades will publish its first edition The Welder in June 2023. We can’t wait to see what comes next for this incredibly talented and smart woman!

Better Together

Susan talks about the importance of showing up! The in-person experience of connecting with others is vital to our health and way more fun. Whether with your work or in your social space, being face to face with people will always present opportunity that can’t be found through digital means. This is not to say those tools don’t provide convenience, but the importance of human connection offers us to use all parts and senses, and adds value in ways that often changes the trajectory of our lives. From thinking, dreaming, creating, and being, when we open ourselves up to have contact with others, it can shape us in ways we hadn’t even considered.

From Disconnect to Reconnect

Susan talks about the dangerous tango couples get into when winning and defending are more important than loving one another. Criticism does not go well in relationships, but turning toward one another’s bids for attention, affection, and connection is the glue that holds them together. We all have bad days, when we need extra love and support. Learning to take a step back, not take things personally, ask for clarification, and then have a healthy dialogue is the way to get started.
