    7. Orko Eloheim, Nomar Slevik

    7. Orko Eloheim, Nomar Slevik

    In this episode…

    • Full-length interviews with futurist producer/MC Orko Eloheim (AKA The Sycotik Alien) and paranormal researcher/author/MC/producer Nomar Slevik;

    • Mini interviews with Algernon Cornelius (on his new album), Darko The Super (on the new MF Grimm album that he produced), and Yikes The Zero on his 2019 album;

    • A podcast recommendation, and more.

Orko takes us back to early times up through his latest happenings, from UFO sightings, to growing up as a misfit, to selling tapes in the streets, to his forthcoming works with Bigg Jus. As an old school conspiracy theorist, Orko also shares his feelings on the recent Q Anon insurgence and the current state of imperialist politics. Follow Orko on Bandcamp and Instagram.

Nomar Slevik, author of Granites Skies and host of the I Want To Believe podcast, takes us through his approach to paranormal research-based rap music, some of his own unexplained experiences, ghost hunting, his latest book, and more. We also discuss possible psychological effects of studying the occult, and some troubling trends in the UFOlogy industry. Follow Nomar at nomarslevik.bandcamp.com and instagram.com/nomarslevik.

This month’s bonus material includes an extra half-hour of talks with Orko (on his formative years, Tachyon Ghetto Blaster, and more) and Nomar (including his theories on ghosts and bigfoot, and more), plus a complete download of the otherwise unavailable album, Hairdresser Mike: Every Single Daze, a rare and bizarre relic from 2004-era Hawaii. Get all of that and the entire back-catalog of bonus episodes (including Antipop Consortium, New Kingdom, Cambatta and more) for $3. ($5 allows you to participate live in the Weird Rap Discussion Gang meetings.) patreon.com/weirdrap

Our podcast recommendation this month is RJ Hates Rap, a pretty unique show indeed.

And for this episode’s music recommendations we speak directly with the artists, discussing…

    6. Spectre (Wordsound Recordings), Self Jupiter (Freestyle Fellowship/Project Blowed)

    6. Spectre (Wordsound Recordings), Self Jupiter (Freestyle Fellowship/Project Blowed)

In this episode we speak to Wordsound Recordings CEO Skiz Fernando and Self Jupiter of Freestyle Fellowship, and we share some essential listening recommendations.

Skiz “Spectre” Fernando, AKA The Ill Saint, guides us through some rarely-told history, illuminating the vital connection between Jamaica and NYC, encompassing the dub reggae and early hip hop that would inform his unique approach to beat production and the dark, dusted aesthetics of his label, Wordsound Recordings. We go over the label’s roster including Prince Paul, MC Paul Barman, Sensational, Scotty Hard and Hawd Gankstuh Rappuhs MC’s Wid Ghatz. We also talk about Bill Laswell and the Jungle Brothers’ fated project Crazy Wisdom Masters. Finally, we discuss Skiz’s long-term relationship with Wu-Tang Clan and his forthcoming book, From The Streets of Shaolin: The Wu-Tang Saga.

This month’s Patreon bonus episode features additional time with Skiz, as he details his early influences, explains how he became a writer for The Source, and shares some arcane knowledge! After that, it’s an exclusive hour-long Sensational mix by Supreme Low who dubs out a selection of some of the greatest, most fucked-up works (including some rare and unreleased tracks) by the self-proclaimed “freak styler”. Get this and all the past bonus episodes (including Anti-Pop Consortium, New Kingdom, Cambatta, Brzowski, and Tokyo Cigar) for just $3 via patreon.com/weirdrap.

Guest correspondent Beverly Fre$h returns to break down Self Jupiter’s verbal and lyrical approach, from his work on Freestyle Fellowship’s Innercity Griots album through his latest releases with Kenny Segal, discussing the subconscious, finding hidden rhythms, leaving room for interpretation, and artworks as living entities. Jupiter also takes us back to the very first night of the infamous Good Life open mic, followed by the formation of Freestyle Fellowship, up through the subsequent years of Project Blowed, sharing how he regarded the growing underground hip hop scene of the late 90s which he and his peers had helped to birth.

We recommend some new releases by Tracy Jones and Bilal Salaam, and an older one that deserves more attention: FLANCH.

And we recommend a podcast, Rhythms Per Minute (hosted by Bloodmoney Perez), particularly an episode illuminating the brilliance of Bigg Jus.

    5. Sunspot Jonz (Mystik Journeymen/Living Legends), Aaron Cartier

    5. Sunspot Jonz (Mystik Journeymen/Living Legends), Aaron Cartier

In this edition we speak to Sunspot Jonz (Mystik Journeymen/Living Legends) and Aaron Cartier, plus a salute to MF DOOM, a middle finger to year-end lists, new music recommendations, and more.

Regardless of familiarity with Sunspot Jonz, any rap fan should be fascinated and inspired by his triumphant tale of overcoming the odds by pure grit. Underground hip hop culture as we know it was shaped to a large degree by this unsung hero, so we insist, no we demand, that everyone familiarize themselves. Sunspot (pka BFAP) walks us through the mid-thru-late 90s rise of Mystik Journeymen and Living Legends as they established themselves first in the Bay Area and then worldwide. We discuss how they built an indie rap music market from scratch and popularized the terms "underground hip hop" and "backpacker". We detail their forging of an international DIY hip hop tour circuit and their approach to self-marketing and distribution before the internet. Being some of the first bedroom hip hop producers and even creating the first consumer "beat tape", we look at their then-unique lo-fi and low-budget approach to recording and manufacturing. Sunspot also speaks about his early relationships with Del, Hieroglyphics, and Good Life/Project Blowed. Finally, he explains the importance of taking risks and believing in oneself.

In a complete 180, we talk to newschool genre-hopping MC/producer Aaron Cartier, getting into the workings behind his noise-trap album Aaron Cartier Best Dog (co-produced by Dylan Brady of 100 Gecs fame) and more.

We also pay tribute to the life and legacy of genius innovator MF DOOM, detail the harm and hubris of year-end lists, recommend the Media Roots Radio podcast (Soundcloud / Apple / Stitcher), and shout out some recent music releases (Spirejump: Granville 31, RAP Ferreira: Bob’s Son, and Moor Mother & billy woods: BRASS).

    4. New Kingdom (Scotty Hard, Nosaj & Sebash)

    4. New Kingdom (Scotty Hard, Nosaj & Sebash)

It’s the show notes! This episode’s focus is on New Kingdom, plus some social commentary, podcast recommendations, and a new music rundown.

With guest correspondent Beverly Fre$h, we interview all three members of the groundbreaking experimental rap group New Kingdom, discussing the group and individual ventures. Jason Furlow (AKA Nosaj, Nature Boy Jim Kelly) ruminates on freestyling with Rammellzee and Sir Menelik, aging, and Project Blowed. Sebastian Laws (AKA Sebstop, Sebash) explains time, synergy, and wanderlust. And producer/engineer Scott Harding (AKA Scotty Hard) takes us through the group’s work with Del and Tricky, answers some questions provided by Mike Ladd, and discusses Sensational. We even have a quick appearance from Elucid who shares his thoughts on New Kingdom too.

Not included in the episode is an additional interview with King Eulas, who sheds additional light on Nosaj. It’s available for free at http://patreon.com/weirdrap. Also included there is the Bonus Episode, featuring the original New Kingdom demo tape and additional interviews including Nosaj’s thoughts on Wordsound Recordings and PM Dawn, Sebastian on his formative years, and Scotty Hard discussing his work with Ka and Lifers Group. If that wasn’t enough, in honor of this episode, Nosaj, King Eulas and Beverly Fre$h put together a foundational avant-garde rap playlist at https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjOA0PXpcXQ84U_dTPbIey-39AHbmi2Ei.

Then we talk about optics; perceptions the role of the white man in hip hop journalism, as it relates to Weird Rap and beyond.

A couple other podcasts we’d like to recommend are #StoriesAboutSongs by Kevin Beacham, and Stirring The Sauce, Vol. 1 on Ice Cube’s "Contract With Black America".

    3. Antipop Consortium, Brzowski

    3. Antipop Consortium, Brzowski

In this episode we’re joined by trailblazing leftfield rap group Antipop Consortium. And we speak with Brzowski. Plus a poem by Beverly Fre$h, a message from Celestaphone, a review of Roy Christopher’s book Dead Precedents, and a rundown of new music releases by doseone, Height Keech, Lil Ghostwriter, drwg, and Serengeti.

In the late 90s Antipop Consortium took the experimental NYC hip hop scene by the neck. The 4-man wrecking crew of Beans, Earl Blaize, Hprizm (AKA High Priest), and M.Sayyid combined futuristic production with aggressive abstract rhymes, heralding a wave of artists which would pave the way for Def Jux, and would forever change the course of music. While remaining true to their name, out of the limelight, APC grew a massive underground fanbase and remains celebrated worldwide to this day.

Our in-depth conversations cover the group’s formation, creative approach, disbanding, solo iterations, and an announcement that will have fans elated. We also unveil a world premiere remix of the group’s single "Apparently" by longtime collaborator MegMan. An additional 45 minutes of the APC interviews are available at http://patreon.com/weirdrap

    Hprizm - https://hprizm.bandcamp.com
    M.Sayyid - https://msayyid.bandcamp.com

We quickly review Roy Christopher’s book, Dead Precedents: How Hip Hop Defines The Future. https://repeaterbooks.com/product/dead-precedents-how-hip-hop-defines-the-future

Brzowski recently decided to bare it all, political controversy be damned, proudly flying the flag of Marxism for his new album, The Subjugation Of Bread. We discuss common misperceptions of Communism, rapping without rhyming, and more. https://brzowskimusic.bandcamp.com

In Search Of Sauce is a podcast surveying hip hop music journalism and discussing the complexities of the genre and culture. https://centralsauce.com

Myka 9 and Kool Keith are featured on the genre-defying album Falling Up by Whatever Your Heart Desires, which is being distributed on digital and vinyl by Weird Rap. http://weirdrap.bandcamp.com

Beverly Fre$h, multi-talented artist and future Weird Rap podcast correspondent, introduces himself to the audience with a spoken word piece. https://www.instagram.com/beverlyfressh

    2. Cambatta, Nate Patrin, Hprizm, Rob Sonic

Weird Rap #2 features a trip into the wild mindscape of rap visionary Cambatta (plus an exclusive track), a journey across time with hip hop historian Nate Patrin, a deep dissertation on GZA and flat earth theory, an ethics discussion with Rob Sonic and Hprizm, new music reviews, and even more!

First, Cambatta peels back some layers on his multi-dimensional lyrics, he details his relationship with spirituality, psychedelic drugs and addiction, he shares his feelings on being outsider, and we ponder why the music world resists complexity. We also get a preview of his forthcoming song "Magic Hour (Acid Shower)". Check out Cambatta at http://cambattamusic.com, http://twitter.com/cambattamusic & http://instagram.com/cambattamusic.

Next, we take a look at the GZA’s recent controversy around flat earth theory, and we flip the script on his classic single "Labels". (See GZA’s post that shook the "globe" at https://www.instagram.com/p/CDmWPGEnCt6.)

Then Nate Patrin, author of Bring That Beat Back: How Sampling Built Hip Hop, discusses the evolution of boundary-pushing hip hop production from its early days to current times, also looking at where rap music may be heading in the future. Follow Nate at http://twitter.com/natepatrin.

Rob Sonic of Hail Mary Mallon and Sonic Sum returns, and Hprizm, AKA High Priest of Anti-Pop Consortium, makes a brief pre-appearance before his full-length interview on the next episode, to discuss the ethics of non-permissioned sampling in music production. Stay abreast of Rob Sonic via http://skypimps.bandcamp.com and http://instagram.com/bobbyfreedom, and keep up with Hprizm at https://hprizm.bandcamp.com and https://twitter.com/HPrizm.

No, the episode is still not over. Because then we give a brief overview of Open Mike Eagle and Prince Paul’s various forays into podcasting and radio shows. Check out their current show, What Had Happened Was, and forthcoming podcasts, via https://twitter.com/StonyIslandPods.

And we review some recent music releases: The Same Day by Oblio, of Dreadnots (https://dreadnotsmusic.bandcamp.com), Jadasea’s Half Life EP (https://jadasea.bandcamp.com), The Damage Done by Marrow, AKA Routiger Slob (https://marrowraps.bandcamp.com/), and Mr. Yote’s album Pello Phantasmo’s Book Of Brew (https://yoteland.bandcamp.com).

Finally, we share a brief overview and preview of a new Weird Rap Records release, the Inner Plenum EP by Lil Ghostwriter, available on digital and vinyl picture disc at http://weirdrap.bandcamp.com, http://audiorecon.bandcamp.com, and all the usual platforms.

Is all that not enough for you? Well, at Patreon there’s about a half hour’s worth of a bonus episode featuring Cambatta expanding on his psychedelic experiences, his rap influences, and comedy. It also includes Nate Patrin detailing the production advancements of Grandmaster Flash, Double D & Steinski, and Prince Paul. He also discusses the current state of leftfield hip hop journalism, and tells us what he’s been listening to lately. It’s yours for $3 at http://patreon.com/weirdrap.

    1. Rob Sonic (Sonic Sum/Hail Mary Mallon)

    1. Rob Sonic (Sonic Sum/Hail Mary Mallon)

For Weird Rap's first episode we're honored to speak with Rob Sonic, known for his solo works as well as collaborative projects Hail Mary Mallon (with Aesop Rock) and Sonic Sum.  We discuss his early days, learning his first rap name, and he even raps some of his adolescent lyrics for us.  We get deep into Rob's cryptic writing formulas, breaking down some of the lyrics for "Honeymoon Suite" from the Defriender album.  He shares his feelings on contemporary early 2000s artists such as Saul Williams, the Ozone Music camp, and Anticon.  He explains why Kool G Rap is considered one of rap's all-time greats, and talks about current artists that he admires.  We also get into his working relationship with Aesop Rock and a possibly forthcoming Hail Mary Mallon album.  And Rob gets candid about the struggles of being a unique independent artist, including thoughts of quitting the music business altogether.

Curly Castro (of ShrapKnel, Wrecking Crew, BLUu Edwards and the Call Out Culture podcast) joins us to pay tribute to a classic and overlooked album: Skipp Coon's Miles Garvey.  We also share some exclusive news about Skipp's forthcoming album, August: Radio Free Jafrica.

Deep-thinking poet and MC Lil Ghostwriter explores the concept of schizophrenia as it applies to rap lyrics and the human psyche in general.  He discusses society's schizophobia.  And he relates all of this to the lyrics of the great R.A.P. Ferreira (AKA Milo, Scallops Hotel, etc. of Ruby Yacht).

Finally, we do an overview of our favorite music releases throughout the year thus far: Zeroh's Blaqlyte, Cambatta's LSD: Lunar Solar Duality, The Koreatown Oddity's Little Dominiques Nosebleed, Armand Hammer's Shrines, Run The Jewels' RTJ4, Serengeti's Ajai, Dos Monos' Dos Siki, and others.
