Sunspot (pka BFAP) walks us through the mid-thru-late 90s rise of Mystik Journeymen and Living Legends as they established themselves first in the Bay Area and then worldwide. We discuss how they built an indie rap music market from scratch and popularized the terms "underground hip hop" and "backpacker". We detail their forging of an international DIY hip hop tour circuit and their approach to self-marketing and distribution before the internet. Being some of the first bedroom hip hop producers and even creating the first consumer "beat tape", we look at their then-unique lo-fi and low-budget approach to recording and manufacturing. Sunspot also speaks about his early relationships with Del, Hieroglyphics, and Good Life/Project Blowed. Finally, he explains the importance of taking risks and believing in oneself.

In the late 90s Antipop Consortium took the experimental NYC hip hop scene by the neck. The 4-man wrecking crew of Beans, Earl Blaize, Hprizm (AKA High Priest), and M.Sayyid combined futuristic production with aggressive abstract rhymes, heralding a wave of artists which would pave the way for Def Jux, and would forever change the course of music. While remaining true to their name, out of the limelight, APC grew a massive underground fanbase and remains celebrated worldwide to this day.

For Weird Rap's first episode we're honored to speak with Rob Sonic, known for his solo works as well as collaborative projects Hail Mary Mallon (with Aesop Rock) and Sonic Sum.  We discuss his early days, learning his first rap name, and he even raps some of his adolescent lyrics for us.  We get deep into Rob's cryptic writing formulas, breaking down some of the lyrics for "Honeymoon Suite" from the Defriender album.  He shares his feelings on contemporary early 2000s artists such as Saul Williams, the Ozone Music camp, and Anticon.  He explains why Kool G Rap is considered one of rap's all-time greats, and talks about current artists that he admires.  We also get into his working relationship with Aesop Rock and a possibly forthcoming Hail Mary Mallon album.  And Rob gets candid about the struggles of being a unique independent artist, including thoughts of quitting the music business altogether.
