Encore Brides & Second Wedding Style Inspo! | EP 185

Encore Brides & Second Wedding Style Inspo! | EP 185

    Fashion Friends what is happening!?

It's your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz, diving into the fabulous world of Encore Brides. 2nd time around? 3rd? No worries; we've got you covered. Fresh off the wedding weekend of my stepson, I'm here to bring you some bridal style inspo and wisdom for those walking down the aisle for an encore.

And, for the first time brides over 40, you're in luck. Read on.

    This Week's Highlights:

Wedding Wins: As the step monster of the groom, the happy couple reigned suprime and so did Holly's dresses, let's be honest. Thanks to some sneaky shoe inserts from Vivian Lou, she danced the night away in her Alexander McQueen dress and aquazzura shoes. #eveningshoewin

Comfort and style can coexist, ladies! (Alcohol helps too). Make sure you hit up your Pinterest board for the week with all of the encore bridal style inspo you need.

Encore Brides 101: When planning to celebrate your love in front of friends and fam again,  Let's make it even better this time! Embrace the do-over and make this celebration scream 'you.' Whether it's ditching the traditional dress or going big on a second dress, it's all about what makes you feel fabulous.

Trend Talk: Non-traditional wedding dresses are all the rage, with the hashtag #nontraditionalweddingdress blowing UP on TikTok. We are all for making a statement that's authentically you, whether it's a splash of color or a chic suit. White NOT required this time around.

Hot Tips for Shopping: Timing is everything. Which means, not shopping too early, which means NOT jumping the gun on buying that dress or those shoes you love 11 months in advance. A six to eight-month lead time is perfect for making sure you're absolutely in love with your choices.

For the Guests: A shoutout to Jane, our loyal listener, who wanted to ask Holly if she liked a particular dress for a wedding she was going to attend in October. Shopping too early is a fashion crime. Don't. Do. It. If you do, believe me, it will lose it's luster. Wait for the invite before splurging on that perfect dress.

Final Thoughts: Whether it's your wedding, or someone else's, remember, to use this opportunity to be the best-dressed wedding guest. Because that's what we are here at the Fashion Crimes Podcast. We are always the best dressed, especially at weddings.

    Designer Shows and Previews:

Bach Mai: The Royal Blue Revelation

Kicking off with Bach Mai, Holly dazzles in a royal blue silk gown by the designer, perfectly paired with gold Jimmy Choo boots. The collection showcased a vibrant mix of large prints, plaids, metallics, and ruffles, crowned with opera gloves for a touch of elegance.

Jonathan Cohen: The Art of Dress

Jonathan Cohen wowed with a collection that felt both timeless and innovative. From pintuck ladylike dresses to vibrant pencil skirts and leather boots, Cohen's signature florals and handcrafted fabric artworks painted a picture of diversity and style.

Proenza Schouler: A Symphony of Sequins and Fringe

The Proenza Schouler show stole Holly’s heart with a dazzling display that perfectly encapsulated the brand's innovative spirit. Holly was living for the sequined and fringed creations that graced the runway. Proenza Schouler has an unmatched ability to blend high fashion with wearable art. This show was a testament to the brand's dedication to pushing the boundaries of design.

Sally LaPointe: Hip & Happening Street Style

Sally LaPointe's school-themed show stole the spotlight with models stepping off a school bus, adorned in feathers, neon, and thigh-high boots. This streetwear-centric showcase was a testament to LaPointe's unparalleled cool-every. single. time.

Dell Scott Collection: Feminine & Flowy Fantasies

Holly highlights Dell Scott's feminine and bold womenswear, a blend of classic silhouettes with modern twists, where metallics and tulle danced together in romantic and bridal and party inspired designs.

    Jason Wu: Timeless Elegance

Jason Wu's collection mixed sequins, shear, and those now-iconic opera gloves, presenting asymmetrical, off-the-shoulder tops and dresses. Wu continues to dress the stars, maintaining his reputation for classic, beautiful designs.

    Evan Hirsch: The Transformative Talent

Evan Hirsch's video game-inspired collection featured transforming gowns that changed styles with a few snaps, a testament to his innovative spirit and creative genius. We love emerging talent.

    Trendspotting with Holly:

Girl Core: A trend that embraces all things feminine, from pink and ruffles to oversized Mary Janes. Think baby doll dressing and all things frilly.

White Magic:  White is back with a vengence and takes center stage, from stark white to light ivory, showcased across various fabrics and styles.

The New Neutrals: Shades of brown, from latte to deep coffee and chocolate make a strong statement. Brown rules all this season and can be paired with most colors.

Red Revival: Crimson and red lipstick make a bold runway entrance. Everything from red leather, silks and sheer embraced the runway and for sure is here to stay.

Plaid Parade: Plaids of all types and mix and match for a fresh take on the classic pattern. Madras, tartans, and classic plaids are opposites that now look like they belong together.

Statement Sleeves & Bows: Oversized sleeves and bows adorn everything, adding a touch of drama and femininity. 3-D and printed bows on shoes, tops, sweaters, jackets, and tights will be super popular and on-trend this season.

Metallics, Florals, and Leather: These staples continue to dominate, with a special shoutout to fringe for an extra flair. Sequins during the day? Always.

Holly recommends wide leg pants as a comfortable and versatile fashion trend that can be worn year round. Combine these with a fitted top or a sleek blazer for a balanced silhouette. Ideal for both casual and formal events. Accentuate your waist with a skinny belt (yes, a skinny belt) and tuck in your top if you can.  For this look, a sneaker is a great option, loafer or a lug sole boot.

    Favorite New Brand:

Holly loves brands that offer stylish yet comfortable options, perfect for those holiday dinners and parties. A fabulous new brand that came her way is ME +EM. Check them out!

    Just Jumpsuits:

    • How to Wear:

A jumpsuit can be a complete outfit on its own, and Holly recommends them for their ability to be dressed up or down. They are a flattering option for any body type! Choose one in a festive color or with an interesting pattern. Add a belt to accentuate your waist. Great for travel!!!

Holly recommends jumpsuits for their versatility and practicality – and offers suggestions to elevating the look by pairing them with a jacket or fun heel.

    Layering for Warmth:

In cooler weather, layer it with a leather moto, oversized chunky cardigan or a cropped blazer.

    Party Dresses:

    How to Wear:

If you are invited to a corporate party or to someone’s home for a dinner party or open house, just assume it's dressy.  Find dresses you already own in our closet (even sleeveless or strapless in the winter) and dress them up by adding tops and shirts UNDERNEATH, or by adding layers on top.

    Accessorize:

Taking time to add statement pieces like a bold pattern jacket, a knit wrap or pattern scarf, chunky jewelry, or colored bag can go a long way to formalizing any dress your already own. If you must go shopping, then this is the best time of the year to get a great deal.

    Holiday Readiness and Organization:

    Be Prepared for All Occasions:

Holly advises having a go-to outfit ready for different types of holiday events, from casual family gatherings to more formal parties. Keep your closet organized and cohesive to avoid feeling like you have ‘nothing to wear.’

    Pajama Chic with Katie Kime:

    Stylish Pajama Option:

Holly recently received a pair of fun and fancy PJs for her 50th and now recommends the Katie Kime brand for stylish pajamas that are comfortable, yet chic enough to wear in front of guests. Who says you can't wear fabulous pajamas around your fam

These pajamas strike the perfect balance between loungewear and guest-appropriate attire, making them a great choice for holiday mornings or casual home gatherings.

And with that – you are Holiday Event-Ready! Be sure to see examples of all of these recommendations on Holly’s Pinterest Board.

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!

Color Analysis with Stylist Abby Young | EP 172

Color Analysis with Stylist Abby Young | EP 172

In Episode 172 of the Fashion Crimes Podcast, host Holly Katz and special guest Abby Young dive deep into the world of fashion, style, and color analysis. Abby is a personal commercial and fashion wardrobe stylist hailing from the sunny shores of California. Together they explore the significance of color analysis in fashion!

    LISTEN HERE!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:

    Fashion Styling and Self-Image Transformation

Abby shares her remarkable journey from being an eighth-grade teacher (UM WHAAT) to transitioning into the world of fashion styling. She attributes her passion for fashion and her love for teaching as the driving forces behind this transformative career change. Abby also highlights her move from the chill vibes of Minnesota to the vibrant fashion scene of California, appreciating the state's relaxed, bohemian atmosphere.

Holly and Abby then take a deep dive into the importance of style and self-expression, especially for mothers who might feel they've lost their fashion mojo after having children. Abby's personal journey may resonate with many listeners who have considered reinventing themselves through fashion.

    Color Analysis and Personalized Styling

As personal stylists, Holly and Abby discuss the art of guiding clients through a personalized style journey. Holly emphasizes the importance of analyzing a client's silhouette and body type, enabling a strong foundation for personalized shopping with elite clients. Abby explains how the aging process can impact color choices, with colors generally remaining consistent every 10 years due to changes in pigmentation of one's complexion.

Abby underscores that high-level executives and entrepreneurs should invest in color testing to optimize their appearance and how they're perceived by their audience. She employs various techniques to determine a client's undertones, examining their skin tone across all four seasons and evaluating the contrast between their skin and the colors they wear.

    Color Analysis and Fashion Advice

Holly and Abby explore the intricacies of color analysis, emphasizing that it goes beyond personal preference. Understanding how colors interact with different skin tones is crucial. They urge listeners to seek out trained professionals for in-person color analysis, as digital tests can be unreliable.

Color Analysis and The Personalized Styling Process

Holly asks about the specifics of Abby’s color analysis testing process, including duration and cost. Abby explains that her process typically takes around 30-45 minutes, with clients receiving their reports within one to two weeks. Clients can choose to work with Abby for clothing, makeup, or both. She also provides insights on selecting makeup colors that complement one's skin tone and facial structure.

    Abby’s Mantra:

“At the end of the day - or when in doubt on what to wear - wear something that brings you confidence, whether you are sure or not that it looks good, or it's the right color. Wear something that you feel confident in when you leave the house - because mentally - you'll feel more confident, and people will see that.”

And that’s the short story on this week’s episode. Be sure to get the full episode and all our exclusive fashion insights wherever you get your podcasts.

We are so grateful for Abby’s fabulous fashion insights! Please follow her on Instagram or find out more about her services on her website.

Designer Spotlight: Jenette Bras | EP 168

Designer Spotlight: Jenette Bras | EP 168

We are SO EXCITED to introduce our Very Special Guest this week - The Master of Bra-Fitting - Jenette Goldstein of Jenette Bras.

Jenette is a former award-winning actor (Aliens) and founder of Jenette Bras, a bra-fitting boutique specializing in sizes D-K, with locations in L.A. and Atlanta. Her tagline: "The alphabet starts at "D"."

As we all know - this is Holly’s favorite subject. But for a twist, Holly is the one learning new lessons - and her MIND WAS BLOWN after a session with Jenette at her boutique in Atlanta.

Join us this week as Jenette shares her amazing story of how she went from Hollywood movie sets to creating a niche business from scratch - with no business experience - and has found great create success by serving woman in a category that has mostly been ignored.

    LISTEN TO EPISODE 169 here!

    ABOUT JENETTE:

Jenette Goldstein is the co-founder and CEO of Jenette Bras, the nation’s premier bra-fitting boutique for full-busted women. The company was founded in East Hollywood in 2009 and has grown to include four shops in Southern California and two in Atlanta.

She is also known for starring as Private Vasquez in the sci-fi horror film Aliens (1986), which won her the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress.

But what are here this week to celebrate her journey from successful actress to female entrepreneur – and the mountains she has climbed in-between.

    HOW IT STARTED:

For Jenette, this whole story may have started at age 12, when she visited the local “bra lady” with her mother, near a kosher butcher.

This was mortifying, but her visits to mall stores were even worse. The fits were abysmal; either the cups were too small, or the band slipped down to her waist. The problem continued plaguing her throughout her life.

With a 32 G bra size, describing herself as “small framed” yet “busty,” she grew increasingly frustrated.

But then, purely by divine intervention, she was in London and found a store servicing “girls that have a small ribcage and a fuller bust.” This experience literally changed her life, because this type of service and women’s undergarments in untypical sizes did not exist in the United States.

Fastforward to somewhere around the time in her 40s, when she found acting jobs becoming scarce, because Hollywood sucks for women.

So, with no business experience, she and her artist husband decided to fill the missing gap in women’s bra sizes and options by opening their first Jenette Bras boutique in LA.

She has since gone from launching a new career, a new company, expanding her brick-and-mortar stores, weathering the shutdown of COVID in the retail sector - and defying ageism – to become THE EXPERT in women’s foundation wear.

HOW TO BUY A BRA THAT FITS: The Importance of Bra Comfort & Self-Acceptance

A bra is the most technical piece of clothing to produce. You can compare it to a men’s tailored suit and or a finely made pair of shoes.

A bra must do the work. For instance, a skirt doesn't have to lift you, it can just look beautiful. The arch of a shoe must do the work: if it does support your arch, your whole body is affected.

The job of a bra is incredibly complicated. It must give comfort, support, and create a beautiful profile. Therefore, the research and development of making this item of clothing is intense.

“The price is not luxury pricing, it's quality pricing.”

A bra is intimate. It is a beautiful piece of clothing. It's what you put on the first thing in the morning, and it should make you feel beautiful (as well as fit well, be comfortable and create a gorgeous silhouette).

That is your secret power. This is your blueprint for getting dressed. This is the foundation of building a great outfit.

Creating an outfit and feeling beautiful takes practice. And you really must start with the undergarments that support your body and give you the confidence that you need to feel fabulous in your clothes.

Everyone has what they call “problem areas,” or parts of the body they are self-conscious about. But this should not bring shame or embarrassment.

You have the power to reshape or support those areas so that you have the kind of confidence that makes you shine from within. Confidence is key.

Holly and Jenette discuss their favorite undergarment brands, the benefits of a professional bra-fitting, and how bras are constructed so you can become an educated consumer!

We had SO MUCH FUN meeting Jenette, and we are grateful for the wealth of knowledge she has imparted on us this week!

10 Things That Are Fabulous about 50 | EP 167

Welcome to this special episode of the FASHION CRIMES PODCAST, where we celebrate the timeless allure of wisdom and the incredible journey of all women when they finally become “of a certain age.”

Your favorite personal stylist, and hostess with the mostest  - HOLLY KATZ - celebrated the BIG 5-0 this week! #DAMN

    HOW IT STARTED:

How was it turning 50? She did it! And she lived through it! And, yes, it was a fabulous, fabulosu day!

But she woke up feeling like, in order to get a handle on her second half, she needed to have some clear well-being goals that were going to give her new thought patterns moving forward. #sowise

Now that she is older and wiser, (right?) she decided that she wanted to shed some of the old self-limiting beliefs and create some new uplifting, self-loving beliefs.

This year, like many of us, had some major growing pains. So, with a new therapist, and an optimistic outlook, we thought it would be perfect for us to reflect on 10 Things That are Fabulous about Being 50 (or turning 50, or half-way through your 50s, etc.)

HOLLY’S 10 THINGS THAT ARE FABULOUS ABOUT 50

10: You’re wearing the right bra.

At this point in your life, your bra is the right size. There's no more guessing or wondering what your size is, you have the right bra which makes your clothes look better and fall correctly on your body. The bra-fitting experience is not only life changing, but also better for your posture and corrects any back issues that you may have.

9: You get to choose your own friends. Yes, you do.

You now have the guts to remove people in your life that are no longer serving you. Think of this: after the last time someone takes advantage of you, or hurts your feelings, or takes you for granted - you need to be over it. Some people are in your life for a reason, some for a season, some for a lifetime.

8: You dress according to your body type.

At this point, you are well aware of which clothes elevate your mood and make you happy. You are body-aware and love to wear clothes that flatter your figure and your shape, which means you have correctly identified your body type. This means you know what cuts and silhouettes look best on you. Which means you only shop according to your body type, you do not shop for color, and you do not shop for price.

7: You’ve not afraid to say NO.

Or, at least you are getting better at saying no. Most of us do not want to disappoint people - and we may even bend over backwards to not make people upset. We’d rather rearrange our schedule, just to avoid saying “no.” Is this you? Well, not anymore, Sister.

6: You continue to elevate your style as you age.

By now, you know your body type and you enjoy shopping because you know what looks best on you. You're also not afraid to try new things that might be a little out of your comfort zone.
