Ep35: The Art of Frugal Finance with Lauren Beltz

Ep35: The Art of Frugal Finance with Lauren Beltz

Lauren Beltz, also known as The Budget Boss shares her journey from growing up in an accounting family to carving her niche in bookkeeping and finance for small businesses.

She discussed The Budget Brigade, her initiative blending education and personal finance. Lauren emphasized the importance of budgeting and recounted her own experiences with managing finances, including the challenges of budgeting on a variable income and the importance of frugality and intentionality in spending. She also talked about her personal life, including her plans to move to Colorado and her strategies to avoid lifestyle creep. Additionally, Lauren provided insights on the emotional aspects of financial planning, the significance of enjoying life without overspending, and the importance of setting realistic financial goals.

    Learn more about Lauren Beltz:

Lauren grew up in a family surrounded by accountants. She learned from prepping 1040 returns at a young age that she did not want to follow the family trend.

She ended up becoming a bookkeeper instead, working in finance and helping small businesses since her teenage years.

Lauren has always been fascinated with numbers and patterns. With over fifteen years of experience, she is excited to take the knowledge she’s learned in industries spanning from aviation, investment firms, motorsports, and retail and focusing it to where her true passion lies – personal finance, sole proprietorships, and small businesses.

She is a previous Financial Peace University coordinator and loves helping friends and colleagues with personal finance questions. It became an inside joke at her last corporate position that an unofficial employee benefit working there was free access to “Budget with Beltz” which has now become The Budget Brigade.

Lauren splits her free time between her two passions: money and stories. When she isn’t working the analytical side of her brain at The Budget Brigade, you can find her spinning up her creative side, writing and editing at Lauren Beltz Writes.

Ep33: Earning, Investing, and Living Fully with Doc G

Dr. Jordan Grumet, or Doc G, a physician turned financial independence advocate,  shares his journey from internal medicine to hospice care, emphasizing how burnout led him to seek financial independence. He also discussed his award-winning podcast, "The Earn & Invest Podcast," and his book "Taking Stock." The book focuses on using financial independence for a regret-free life, drawing from hospice patients' insights.

Doc G encourages saving with purpose, considering life's unpredictability, and preparing for end-of-life scenarios both medically and financially. He also highlights the importance of leaving a lasting legacy beyond just financial wealth.

    Learn more about Doc G:

Doc G, born in 1973 in Evanston, Illinois, has emerged as an influential voice in the intersection of medicine and personal finance. His journey began with a deep-rooted passion for medicine, leading him to Northwestern University where he earned his medical degree. This path initially took him into the world of internal medicine, a field where he excelled and built a successful career.

However, facing the common challenge of professional burnout, Doc G embarked on a transformative journey that extended beyond the hospital walls. He found a new calling in hospice palliative care, a specialty that brought him closer to the human aspects of medicine and the profound experiences at the end of life.

Parallel to his medical career, Doc G developed a keen interest in financial independence. This pursuit was driven by a desire to balance financial security with a life rich in experiences and purpose. His quest for financial wisdom was not just about wealth accumulation but about finding harmony between fiscal responsibility and a meaningful existence.

Doc G's combined expertise in medicine and finance materialized in his acclaimed book, "Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life." The book has resonated with a broad audience, offering valuable insights into aligning financial ambitions with life’s deeper goals.

In addition to his literary contributions, Doc G is the brains behind the "The Earn & Invest" podcast. This award-winning platform showcases his insights on financial independence, earning him recognition including the Plutus Award for Best New Personal Finance Podcast in 2019 and a nomination for Best Personal Finance Podcast in 2020.

Doc G’s unique blend of medical and financial acumen has made him a prominent figure in the personal finance community. He advocates for a holistic approach to wealth, emphasizing its role as a means to a fulfilling, regret-free life rather than an end in itself.

Currently serving as the Associate Medical Director at Journey Care Hospice, Doc G continues to make a profound impact in the medical field. Simultaneously, he guides individuals towards financial literacy and independence, inspiring them to embrace a balanced, purpose-driven life.

Ep24: The Growth of The Physician Philosopher: From Solopreneur to Venture-Backed Startup

Ep24: The Growth of The Physician Philosopher: From Solopreneur to Venture-Backed Startup

Dr. Jimmy Turner's entrepreneurial journey began when he started his own business called The Physician Philosopher. He initially started as a solopreneur, figuring things out on his own and learning along the way. He had to navigate the process of setting up an LLC, getting an employer identification number, and opening a bank account. Despite the challenges, he believed that there was nothing he couldn't learn if he put his mind to it.

In the first couple of years, Dr. Turner didn't pay himself a substantial amount from his business. In fact, he didn't pay himself at all for the first 18 to 20 months. He was working 60 hours a week as an anesthesiologist and putting an additional 20 to 25 hours into his business. He was working more after residency than he did during residency.

Dr. Turner's business initially started as a blog where he wrote three posts a week and sought out sponsors. Over time, it grew into something more. He wrote a couple of books, started a podcast, and even launched a coaching program. His focus was on helping physicians use financial independence to combat burnout and achieve financial wellness.

In February, Dr. Turner took a new step in his entrepreneurial journey by joining a venture capital-backed startup called Attend as a chief medical officer and co-founder. This marked a transition from running his own business to being a part of a larger organization. The growth and success he experienced in his own business led him to this new opportunity.

Ep23: The Secrets of Essentialism for Physicians with Dr. Kristine Goins, The Nomad MD

Ep23: The Secrets of Essentialism for Physicians with Dr. Kristine Goins, The Nomad MD

Dr. Goins found freedom through travel by embracing her passion for exploring healing approaches outside of conventional medicine and combining it with her love for traveling. Her journey from traditional medical practice to becoming a digital nomad reflects her desire to break free from the constraints of traditional medicine and immerse herself in a nomadic lifestyle.

Dr. Goins initially started her journey to become a doctor at a young age, like many others in the medical field. However, she also had a strong passion for traveling, which she picked up as a teenager through books. Although she couldn't afford to travel at the time, she traveled extensively in her imagination through the stories she read.

As she pursued medicine and prepared for medical school, Dr. Goins faced conflict within herself. She felt that medicine required all of her time, energy, and resources, leaving little room for her other passion for traveling. She even expressed her concerns to her mother, worried that she wouldn't have the opportunity to live the life she had envisioned for herself.

This is a lovely conversation. We hope you enjoy.
