    The Story of North Central Florida musician, JR REICH (of Ssnakeeyez)


    JR was born into a musical family in Ohio, later moving to Texas and then eventually relocating to Ocala, Florida in 1986. JR learned how to play and record music at an early age, starting out first on the bass guitar. Soon thereafter, JR picked up guitar from his father and drums from his mother.


    He recorded and engineered his first album when he was just 15 years old, a gospel country album by JR & Darlene titled "The Song That I Remember", released in 1994. JR's father, Lou Reich recorded several country music singles under his name and with the String Shifters. JR grew up listening to country music greats such as Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and Willie Nelson. Since the mid 90's, JR has played in the 3-piece band, Ssnakeeyez, which incudes his wife Donna on bass. Ssnakeeyez plays a mix of original and cover songs, releasing two CDs of original music. JR is also an established solo musician, playing full-time across North Central Florida. [Recorded: 02/19/24]

    Roger's musical journey started in the early 1980s South Florida punk and hardcore scene. Before eventually landing on the name the Drills, the band started out as Upsetters and then briefly went by Stukas, playing shows at Flynn's Ocean 71 and more. After Flynn's closed, the Drills would go on to play often at the Cameo Theatre. Over the years, the Drills played with bands such as Husker Du, Bad Brains, Dead Boys, Suicidal Tendencies, D.R.I., T.S.O.L., The Lords of the New Church, Red Kross and many more! The Drills also played with countless Florida bands such as Sector 4, Amazing Grace, Noise For The Needy, Morbid Opera, Psycho Daisies, Rugged Edge, The Rock City Angels and many more! The Drills would eventually relocate to Los Angeles, morphing into Rattlebone, where they signed with Hollywood Records. Other notable L.A. bands to Roger's credit are Smash Fashion and most recently Crymwav.

    Authors Joey Seeman and Chris Potash were there, participating in and documenting the first, second, and subsequent waves of musicians, indie labels, DJs, record stores, radio stations, publications, and players who came together to create a unique cultural moment and movement in South Florida history. In this episode, Joey and Chris tell the story behind their book Punk Under The Sun: '80s PUNK & NEW WAVE in SOUTH FLORIDA. [Episode 71: Recorded 01/29/2024]


    ****About The Authors****

    Joey Seeman is a writer, graphic designer, painter, and DJ. His artwork has been published in SPIN, Art Alternatives, Ocean Drive, and Juxtapoz and been shown in galleries in Portland, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Miami, including in the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. In the 1980s he played bass in several local Miami bands, including Fade II Gray and Naughty Puritans.


    Chris Potash wrote about music, film, and art in South Florida for the weekly Wave and daily Miami News from 1986 through 1988. His “Off the Record” column gave him insider access to local bands and touring acts.

    The Story of Brian Franklin


    Brian moved to Miami, FL in 1990, where he met Jeff Rollason and started playing with the band Strangelove and acoustically where he could. Brian would perform at open mics around Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County. Between 1993-1994 Brian played with band Sabatella, and was a regular performer at Blue Steel, Talk House, South Beach Pub, and Roses. Over the years, Brian released 3 studio including albums, including co-writing the soundtrack to Rat Opera, a homage to longtime South Florida producer and noise-king of Miami, Frank "Rat Bastard" Falestra. In 1995, Brian was signed to a developmental deal with Mercury/Polygram Records. He played with the Diane Ward Band throughout the late 90's and also lead his own band called Tumbleman. In 2015, Rat Opera, co-written with Rob Elba (Holy Terrors), was released both as a soundtrack and opera-style performance at the Cinema Paradiso in Hollywood, FL.

Jeano Roid (vocalist) tells the story of the early beginings of the band, the Roidz recorded music, memories of gigs throughout Florida; including a show in Ybor City (Tampa), where The Roidz opened up for one of the most controversial figures in punk/music history, GG Allin


    Jeano opens ups about the dissension with Bootleg Bill (The Roidz original guitarist) and his long friendship with Boomer Roid aka John Colie (The Roidz drummer), who sadly passed away in 2022.

    Dan Destructo's early beginnings started in the late 1970's with his first band The Warp. Shortly thereafter, in the early 1980s, the punk/thrash legends we know today, NO FRAUD was born! No Fraud released one of the finest hardcore punk/thrash demo cassette tapes in 1985. Over the years, No Fraud has gone to release several tapes, seven inches, EPs and compilations.     Audrey Silverman grew up in South Florida (Miami) and went to college at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Atoms For Peace was formed sometime between 1983-1984 by George Tabb (Roach Motel/Furious George) and Chip Fowkes. They added Audrey Silverman (bass), Nancy Goff (drums), Tom Holtz (guitar).     Bruce Staelens has a 30+ year career playing trumpet and teaching music. He grew up in the Orlando area, performing at the majority of local clubs and venues all throughout the Central Florida area. Bruce also played in other parts of the state including Jacksonville, Tampa, Miami, Key West, Sarasota and many other cities. He recorded many sessions for independent blues label King Snake Studios (Sanford, FL) along with many blues shows. Bruce spent 11 years in NY and played events in Canada, Europe, Japan, and more. Three of the four original band members: Brent Wilson (vocals/guitar), later formed Radon (Gainesville), Andre Serafini (drums), later formed Quit (Miami) and Mike Wetherill (bass) tell the story of Chocolate Grasshopper from the band's origins, the Partyin' With Beardhead demo cassette, shows at the Cameo Theatre, skateboarding, and a lot more.
