For Her

Through the course of season one with For Her, the shared experiences, discussions and lessons learned were meant to last for years to come. While for most our interest and focus change, who we are at our respective cores will guide us.

We solidified our belief in the community, taking care of the place and the people that make us. We also discovered what the outside world has to offer. From our passions and our beliefs, to our curiosity and the unknown, there's an entire world to discover.

With that in mind, we conclude on what we learned, how our perspectives have expanded and where we can go next...

The YJC's work strives to build a youth, family, and formerly and currently incarcerated people’s movement to challenge America’s addiction to incarceration and race, gender and class discrimination.

Beyond their inspiring work, the action they take is vital. By pushing the efforts forward now, the results will benefits generations for years to come. It's no small task, but as we've learned, the YJC is up to the challenge.

Welcome to another, very special edition of For Her, an ongoing series from Shoe Palace and Nike, where we’re illuminating female leaders in the Black and LatinX community who are actively making change in their world around them. On this episode we focus on a very important topic -- something so essential in our daily lives -- mental health and wellness.

We’re joined by our good friends at Black Girls Smile, founder Lauren Carson brings her inspirational and motivational energy that has propelled her to her place as leading writer and speaker on mental health. As Lauren tells Black Girls Smile has built a platform to provide education and resources for African American females in efforts to see that they lead healthy, balanced and productive lives. It is some quality insight and a conversation we’re all better off to experience.

On this episode of For Her, Natalia and DeNika sit down with Andi Xoch, founder of Latin X with Plants.

Started in Los Angeles, Latin X with Plants is rooted in the community, and is an organization that utilizes collaboration to celebrate people of color in the plant community. Through the power of plants, Andi Xoch has worked to show how connecting to nature can help heal, strengthen and grow. In just a short amount of time, Latin X with Plants has shown us how we can connect and come together to enrich our lives and the world around us.

On this edition of For Her, Natilia and Dionna are joined by Chaniel Smiley, the commissioner of South Central Los Angeles' pride and joy, the Drew League.

Founded in 1973, the Drew League is LA basketball. From what began as a community game, it grew to become a showcase for local and pro talent, and a fixture in the city. While the league is now a mainstay in basketball culture, for Chaniel it is family. Beyond the NBA stars who have graced the court like Demar Derozan, James Harden and Kobe, the Drew has stood up the community in South Central Los Angeles. Under her guidance, Chaniel has continued to expand the Drew’s reach and influence for generations to come.

On this installment of For Her, Natalia and DeNika are joined by the founder of Sista Skate, Kamry James. Sista Skate is not only an organization that leads in teaching and performance of skating as an art form, but also a place to find joy and an increased sense of confidence.

Started in 2020 with a goal to shine a light on black, brown and nonbinary roller skaters, Kamry created an outlet for women to feel both safe and empowered. A shining light herself, we find out from Kamry just what inspired her to take action, and how she put it together. From teaching and motivating, to leading herself, Kamry has established something in Sista Skate that we can all feel empowered by.

In this first installment, we have the amazing, the insightful, the talented...DeNika Turner-Stephens, founder of Runway4Peace. 

In Compton, California, DeNika started Runway4Peace as an initiative to provide confidence for at-risk youth in a safe space, by infusing fashion, self-esteem and fun. She tells us how she channeled her experiences to start the foundation and why we should all see the beauty in ourselves. DeNika also shares her vision for future generations to stand up and walk tall towards the world they will someday run.

It’s a truly inspiring and moving conversation, with plenty to learn from and draw to our everyday lives. So here it is, For Her, with our very special guest, DeNika Turner-Stephens.

For Her is an ongoing initiative from Shoe Palace and Nike, where the next generation of female leaders from the Black and LatinX come together to speak on their respective journeys to make a difference in the world around them. 

Driven to inspire and lift up their communities, our panelists will share stories of successes, learning experiences and perspectives on how to make a real difference through everything from art and activism, to mental health and leadership. Our sessions are led by the heads of groups including: Runway 4 Peace, The Youth Justice Coalition, Sista Skate and Black Girl Smile, and others who have built impressive platforms that strive for empowerment, a strong sense of self and a path for future generations of women to follow. 

In the For Her series, beyond the panel discussion, you’ll also experience a series of workshops focused on relaying the blueprint for breaking barriers and building meaningful initiatives. We’ll provide the framework, show you how and explore where else we can go. Changing the game for sure!
