    Friday Night Wine Fight

We are three Melbourne girls who had nothing better to do than start a podcast while we were all Living La Vida Lockdown - and we have been in and out of lockdown ever since! So we take aim at one topic each week with a bottle or three of wine and try to make some sense of it.

Round 63 - English Words, Like How?

Round 63 - English Words, Like How?

This week the girls take aim at... English words, Like How?

    Amy
introduced tonight's topic and explained how this topic came from another topic we covered recently being English words, like why? Tonight we thought we would dive into how words are created and some of our favourite created words. According to research (not ours), there are 13 ways in which new words are created.

Amy then discussed some words she recently discovered being omnishambles and meh. She also gave a special shout out to Mc Job which is a word used to describe a low paying job with little to no opportunity for advancement.

Bianca filled in the middle discussing the use of "ard" at the end of a word and despite it being fun to say it's actually a derogatory term. Bianca also threw in some of her famous tidbits (we now call them titbits) discussing how the use of a foreign word can mean the object of the word is named the same thing twice but in different languages.

Sarah finished us off by explaining how words are not her friends and escape her most of the time. She then discussed four words that she enjoys saying being collywobbles, lollygag, erinaceous, nudiustertian, and pauciloquent.

    Round 62 - Secret Identities

    Round 62 - Secret Identities

This week the girls take aim at... Secret Identities

    Sarah
opens the topic with a quick google on what a secret identity is. It turns out that it's just a simple way of saying pseudonym.

Sarah then goes on to explain what a pseudonym is and where the word came from and some famous people who have shed their birth names in place of a pseudonym. Sarah struggled to say that word so we are going with secret identities as our topic title.

Sarah chose Margaritha Zelle as her subject for the night. A divorced mother of two who gave up married life to become one of the world's first exotic dancers going by the name Mata Hari. She danced for some of the world's most influential and powerful people making new friends and lovers wherever she went. That was until the day she was asked to be a spy for France. She was arrested and accused of being a double agent. She was later executed by firing squad. But what happened to her body?

Amy decided to discuss the incredible life of Mrs. Nancy Wake. Nancy was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia at the age of two. At the age of 16, she left school to become a nurse. Finding this profession to be less than glamourous she decided to leave Australia and become a journalist in England. She later met and married a French industrialist and was living in Marseilles when the second world war broke out.

After the war broke out Nancy vowed to do whatever she could to help the allied forces and the French resistance. Nancy was forced to leave her home, her husband and flee to England where she began training with the British Special Operations Executive (S.O.E). Nancy's efforts during the war were nothing short of heroic and we at Friday Night Wine Fight salute her.

Bianca ends the show with some fictional secret identities from DC comic books with Robin and Wonder Girl. She then goes into films where the characters use secret identities for a number of reasons. Either they are an actor trying to hide who they are or they're in a secret club that they can't talk about. They may even be a criminal on the run. One thing is for sure, Bianca had done her homework and had quite the list for us.

Round 61 - TV Shows that Jumped the Shark

This week the girls take aim at... TV Shows that Jump the Shark

    Bianca
opened the episode with the background and history of "jumping the shark" then she introduced her cohosts to 2 new sayings "Nuke the Fridge" and "Growing the Beard". Amy was not a fan of the latter.

Then Bianca got into her 3 shows; Battlestar Galactica, The Office, and True Blood.

Sarah covered the "love 'em or hate 'em" Musical Episodes of; Passions, The Flash, Lucifer, and Scrubs.

Amy bought the episode to a close with the pivotal moment Weeds went too far.

    Round 60 - Movie Music

    Round 60 - Movie Music

This week the girls take aim at ... Movie Music

    Amy
introduced tonight's topic by discussing the use of music in movies and how it can change the way a viewer is feeling during the film. Amy then explained how she combats being scarred in movies when she's home alone (she turns the sound off). Amy is now the resident fun police.

Amy then went on to discuss the use of music in one of her favourite film franchises, James Bond films. Everyone knows the classic James Bond theme song. However, Amy went a bit deeper and discussed the use of instrumental music to emphasize dramatic parts of the film and the famous artists who have sung the opening song which accompanied the James Bond theme.

Bianca discussed a few songs from some of her favourite films and how when she hears that particular song she is swept away to a scene in the film.

Sarah decided to take aim at Disney movies and the songs that accompany them. Sarah decided to cover Disney movies in this episode because she finds they get stuck in her head way more than they should. Sarah is a fan of all the usual suspects but also loves a song from a little-known Disney film called Darby O'Gill. The song that gets stuck in her head the most is Pretty Irish Girl.

    Sarah
opens with what life hacks are and why they are meant to make your life easier. She then jumps into some life hacks that don't work and one you should not even try.

    Bianca
gives us some life hacks that actually work. Hacks like how to stop a pot from boiling over, a self-defense hack, and even one on how to hide a dead body (preferably an animal body).

    Amy
ends with a hack that is a little strange. Amy discusses all the ways you can use toothpaste for cleaning and she was not just talking about your teeth.

    Round 58 - Eccentric Millionaires

This week the girls take aim at... Eccentric Millionaires

    Bianca
opened the episode with a list of the top 20 richest people right now (thank you, Forbes). We immediately sh*t all over the usual suspects.

Then Bianca spoke on the life and experiences of the very eccentric Jocelyn Wildenstein, who is one of the wealthiest divorcees in the world. What makes her legendary is the life she led and the plastic surgery journey she went through.

Amy decided to cover the 18th Duchess of Alba, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart y Silva. The duchess was the most titled aristocrat until her death in 2014 holding over 50 hereditary titles.

Sarah finishes us off with a self-made millionaire by the name of Scott Alexander. This gentleman made his first million in the first year of opening his company that caters to the wealthy who desire to have what they want without any of the waiting time. He also got into the property market and bought himself a town in Bulgaria back in 2006.

    Round 57 - Haunted things

    Round 57 - Haunted things

This week the girls take aim at... Haunted things!

    Amy
kicks us off this week with a brief discussion about haunted objects as opposed to houses. She then explained how her search for haunted things was foiled by the fact it's Halloween season and everything on eBay is described as haunted at the moment.

Amy then launched into her haunted item being James Dean's car accurately named little bastard. The car was involved with James Dean's untimely death as well as many bizarre accidents. Despite being wreckage after Dean's accident, little bastard continued to cause havoc where ever it went. Haunted or cursed? We will never know.

Bianca then told us that her daughter asked her to cover Robert the Doll however she quickly debunked every occurrence claimed to have happened with this doll and decided to cover the devil's rocking chair. This story features our favorite Conjuring couple, the Warrens.  This story, unfortunately, ended in a death of an innocent person however the chair lives on in a museum in North America.

Sarah was also asked by Bianca's daughter to cover a particular haunted thing being the devil's tree. The story of the devil's tree that Sarah found, whilst spooky and mysterious, was not the one that Bianca's daughter told so Bianca dragged her daughter on for a guest appearance to explain this other story.

opens with the topic introduction and a little bit about why people love roadside attractions. She also discussed a legend about the first roadside attraction.  She then goes on to talk about two attractions, the Angel of the North and the world's largest Cuckoo Clock.

    Amy
then jumps in and discusses some of Australias biggest roadside attractions. She highlights some special giant things from each of our states and decides to build her very own big wine bottle in her front yard, just to not feel left out.

    Bianca
ends the topic with a twist by talking about some of Australias smallest roadside attractions, from the gnome roundabout in Western Australia to a maze that has a tiny village in it.  She also tells us of a magical garden that grandfather with a wonderful imagination built.

Round 54 - Better than the original

Round 54 - Better than the original

This week the girls take aim at... Remade Movies

Amy introduced this week's topic by running through a brief history of remade music and movies. Amy then discussed some fun facts about the most remade movies and some epic flops of remade movies.

For something different and because she had to leave midway through recording the episode we let Sarah go first this week.

Sarah chose a couple of songs that she preferred the remake of instead of the originals. Sarah also declared her love for the movie Titanic made in 1997 which is far better than the original or any of the remakes of this movie (there are many).  Face it, you cannot beat Dicaprio.

Amy jumped back in at this point in the show to discuss a movie that she believed was better than the original. Amy's pick was the Stepford wives. The original was made in 1975 then remade in 2004. Amy like the remake better because she thought the equality between the genders discussion was better made in the remake.

Bianca finished us off by discussing the movie Freaky Friday and two of its remakes. The original film was made in 1976 and stars then child star Jodie Foster. The first remake Bianca discusses is the remake made in 1995 starring Shelly Long and Gabby Hoffman. The final remake Bianca discusses is the 2003 version starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. In Bianca's opinion, both remakes are better than the original.

Amy then jumps into the story of Patricia Hearst, a young woman who was abducted and held captive until the day she decided to take up arms and join her captors in their cause and in doing so became a wanted criminal.

Bianca ends the week's topic with the sad story of Mary McElroy, a 25-year-old woman who was abducted straight out of the bath and held captive in an old farmhouse while her father haggled with her captors.

Amy went fuzzy tail deep this week and dissected Ring a Ring a Rosie. This was an interesting one as all the girls thought they knew the origins of this nursery rhyme. Turns out they all had it wrong!

    Amy
kicked us off this week by discussing how some animals become famous. Some are on TV or in movies, others are famous because their owners are famous. Then you have animals who are celebrities in their own right for doing something somewhat remarkable.

Amy then discussed the phenomena of animals who have become celebrities because of their presence on social media. Amy also chats about the insane number of followers these animals have.

Sarah then told us the life story of a dog made famous by his appearance on TV and in movies in the early 1920s. The tale of Rin Tin Tin is a fascinating one and our listeners may be surprised to discover this famous dog's humble beginnings.

Bianca finished us off this week by discussing one of the most famous horses in the world, Mr Ed. Mr Ed was a tv show about a horse that could talk. Round 49 - Best action movie scene

Round 49 - Best action movie scene

This week the girls took aim at... our favorite action movie scenes

    Bianca
firstly gave us a background in the psychological effects of watching an action movie scene which explained why we are so in love with them. She also discussed some of the most expensive action movie scenes ever filmed (you would be very surprised what the most expensive one was!).

Bianca then discussed her favourite action movie scene which comes from the second Lord of the Rings Trilogy - the Two Towers. Bianca's favourite scene is the Battle of Helm's Deep also called the Battle of the Hornburg. This scene has been described as one of the greatest battle scenes in film history, combining technical mastery, sweeping spectacle, and tonal balance. Bianca agrees with this comment wholeheartedly!

Amy was the meat in the sandwich this week and being the action movie lover that she is, was very excited about this topic. Amy's favourite action movie scene comes from the 1996 movie called The Long Kiss Goodnight which stars Gina Davis and Samuel L Jackson. The scene that she loves the most (she loves every scene in this movie) does feature the swear word most associated with Samuel L Jackson, however, he is not the one who utters it.

Sarah wrapped up tonight's episode by discussing her favourite action movie scene which comes from the movie The Kingsman. Colin Firth is the star of Sarah's favourite scene which is set in a church with loads of action and violence. This led the girls on to a tangent where it was agreed that Colin Firth should be James Bond.

She then goes into her first haunted house being the Ancient Ram Inn. Sarah then discusses her second haunted house called black monk house. A house that is haunted by an evil spirit that is said to be dressed like a monk.

Bianca was up next with the tails of her very own hauntings that she has lived with for over five years. She then goes into the haunting of a family home in Rhode Island.  This haunting was so legendary that a movie was made out of the terrible events that plagued the family of the Conjuring House.

Amy rounds off the night with a haunted house that is a little closer to home. The Monte Cristo Homestead is a house that is located in Junee New South Wales.  It is said to be haunted by at least three spirits of those who have met their end at the homestead in fairly horrific circumstances.

kicked us off this week by explaining some psychology around why we humans love trash TV. Essentially there are three types of viewers, guilty pleasure watchers, ironic consumption viewers and those labelled camp sensibility.

Bianca then dived into some of her favourite trashy tv shows being crime procedurals (Law and Order SVU, Criminal minds), reality tv (Jackass, Dudesons) and finally a little known gem Son of the Beach.

Amy then discussed how she is not often the sort of person who enjoys trash tv however there are some exceptions being Passions, Toddlers and Tiaras and Extreme Couponing. She, like the TV she sometimes watches, is utter trash.

    Amy
started off this week by explaining why we find some aspects of life in the United States of America to be weird and or strange. Out of love for our North American cousins, we decided to dedicate a whole episode to the interesting things we have found along the way which make them so unique. Amy explained some of the things she found in her travels to the United States of America to be wonderfully weird.

    Sarah
took aim at American Presidents and some fun facts about them. She discussed the longest and shortest inaugural speeches, the fact that President Lincoln was an accomplished wrestler, and how the White House ended up with a four-man bathtub  (spoiler alert - someone got stuck!).

    Bianca
then wrapped up with a discussion about some strange laws.
