    Marijuana Legalization & Reparations - January 31, 2022

    LBS is working closely with ACLU of Maryland and MD Senator Jill P. Carter to produce a bill this session that legalizes recreational cannabis with a focus on repairing the damage done by the war on drugs. 

    For this episode, we will be unveiling what will be in the bill and give the public an opportunity to ask questions. 

    We must put pressure on the Maryland General Assembly to pass a version of cannabis legalization that truly empowers Black people who have been most harmed war on drugs.

    The COVID-19 public health emergency derailed a lot of progressive policy advocacy efforts in the 2020 legislative session. The 2021 session has begun and there are a flurry of reforms being considered by legislators. We'll be discussing our legislative agenda and some of the challenges we expect in getting it executed.

    We're heading towards the middle of MDGA 2020 - and there's a lot to cover. On this episode, we'll be talking about Gov Larry Hogan’s recent comments about his crime package and frustration with Senator Will Smith - Chairman of the Judicial Proceedings committee..

    We’ll also be discussing the necessity of law enforcement accountability and its relevance to public safety. Also: are moderates allies in the fight for racial justice? You’ll get some insight into how is playing itself out this session - particularly on public safety. 

    There have been a few hearings last week in Annapolis relating to legislation we’re supporting - so we’ll share some of what we said during our testimony and the feedback we’ve been hearing from our opposition.

    We’ll finish off with discussing our participation in the education reform fight in solidarity with Black-led education organizations.

    At the top we’ll be discussing the so called “black hole" in Baltimore. This is a concept used to discuss the so called "over investment" of financial resources in Baltimore City.

    Welcome to the first episode of "From The Streets to The Statehouse" - a new podcast aimed at giving you a community centered analysis on the Maryland General Assembly.

    Since session officially started on January 8th, there have been major shifts in the statewide and local political landscape.

    Dayvon Love, Director of Public Policy for Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, will be talking about the changing leadership roles in both the Senate and House chambers and what that means for our communities. 

    There will also be deeper analysis on our legislative agenda and other so-called "progressive" agenda items being proposed this year.
