    Drawn to the intersection of spirituality and mental health, Kelly found the utmost joy in listening to peopleā€™s stories.Ā  She began her career as a student youth pastor and later worked as a community-based mental health therapist. Prior to joining The Summit, she worked in private practice in Brookhaven, GA. She has had the privilege of working alongside individuals, couples, and families dealing with relationship issues, grief and loss, life transitions, addiction, and various personal concerns such as anxiety, depression, OCD, and other behavioral challenges. As part of her work, she is committed to working with individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ or anyone questioning/exploring their gender identity.Ā Ā 

    Kelly utilizes an integrative approach with her clients to explore the negative effects of stressful or traumatic life experiences that get in the way of achieving their goals.Ā  She has advanced training in trauma-informed care and evidence-based practices. Through her work with children and adolescents, she has found that understanding attachment and the caregiver relationship is vital to helping families function more effectively. Caregivers are incorporated throughout the course of therapy.Ā 

    A lifelong learner, she attends many continuing education workshops each year and reads books and professional journals related to mental health, therapy, nutrition, and wellness.Ā  She has also facilitated grief support groups and co-presented trauma-informed workshops to other mental health professionals.

She was named one of Atlantaā€™s Top 100 Women of Influence for 10 years starting in 2006 by The Atlanta Business League and is now a Tenured Woman of Influence.     Dr. Amelia Burke-Garcia is a seasoned health communication professional with nearly 20 years of experience in health communication program planning, implementation, and evaluation, with specific expertise in developing and evaluating digital and social media communication and research. At NORC (National Opinion Research Center), she leads the organization's Digital Strategy and Outreach Program Area, where she designs and implements strategies that leverage the power of digital media to influence behavior. In this role, Burke-Garcia develops new digital and mobile data collection methodologies and communication solutions. Most recently, she acted as director for the award-winning How Right Now/Que Hacer Ahora campaign, which is aimed at increasing peopleā€™s ability to cope and be resilient amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.Ā 

    Amelia currently leads two grants focused on exploring vaccine hesitancy amongst communities of color which build on her earlier work exploring messages and motivations of vaccine-hesitant or refusing social media influencers (findings from which were published in Vaccine in 2020). Over the course of her career, Dr. Burke-Garcia has spearheaded some of the most innovative communication programs and studies on a variety of health topics including designing a targeted social media intervention with mommy bloggers to help social media users lower their risk for breast cancer and leveraging MeetUp groups and the Waze mobile application to move people to action around flu vaccination and HIV testing, respectively.

    Amelia is the author of the book entitled, Influencing Health: A Comprehensive Guide to Working with Online Influencers and has been named to VeryWellHealth.comā€™s list of 10 Modern Female Innovators Shaking Up Health Care. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication from George Mason University, a Masterā€™s degree in Communication, Culture, and Technology from Georgetown University, and a joint honors Bachelorā€™s degree in International Development Studies and Humanistic Studies from McGill University.
