Episode #393: My new book, Time Rich, is out today + 10 Productivity Tips

Episode #393: My new book, Time Rich, is out today + 10 Productivity Tips

    Today’s the day (finally)!

My fifth book, Time Rich: Do Your Best Work, Live Your Best Life, is now available.

The book was originally slated for release in May, but with all of the uncertainty surrounding coronavirus at the time, my publisher (Wiley) and I decided to push it back to October, thinking that the world would have returned to some semblance of normality by then.

While that isn’t exactly the case, the book is perhaps more relevant now than ever, with people spending, on average, 11 hours a day staring at screens since remote work became more than just a fringe startup and freelancer movement, and a reality for almost everybody employed in a white collar profession.

As Roman statesman and philosopher Seneca put it almost two millennia ago, “people are frugal with their money but not with their time”, but unlike money, time cannot be earned back once we’ve spent it and it is by virtue of the shortness of life, the most precious commodity we have.

Time Rich builds upon the foundation laid by my Harvard Business Review article, The Case For the 6-Hour Workday, and provides actionable insights for not only the lone worker, but teams and leaders at large organizations.

It’s about reorganizing how we work - something we’ve never truly learned how to do - in order to not just be more productive and more innovative, but free up time to lead our best lives.

The book has been endorsed by a number of thought leaders, including Adam Grant, Nir Eyal and Whitney Johnson.

Adam Grant (bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take) was kind enough to say that “Steve Glaveski understands something that few leaders have figured out: it’s possible to do less and get more done. This book offers a blueprint for working smarter.”

Nir Eyal (bestselling author of Hooked and Indistractable) put it simply; “Steve Glaveski offers countless ways to get more out of each day”.

If you’re looking to get more out of your days - whether that be at work or in your personal life - then I am sure that a modest investment in this book will repay itself in orders of magnitude.

And if you’re not convinced, below you’ll find ten quick tips which scratch the surface of what you will find in Time Rich.

How You Can Support the Book

Buy the book: Of course, the best way to support the book is to pick up a copy. You can do so here.

Bulk buy: If you work for a company and think that your organization might benefit from learning how to be smarter with its time, then I am offering bulk buy deals, which also include a remote keynote talk. You can learn more about that here. This might be of interest to your human resources team.

Leave a review: And if you’ve read and enjoy the book, I would really appreciate it if you took a minute or two to leave a review on Amazon, Goodreads, Booktopia or your platform of choice.

Share it on social: If you’d otherwise like to support me and the book, you can share it to socials with the following pre-populated share links, or forward this email to some colleagues or friends: Twitter | Facebook | Linkedin

Thank you so much for your support - without an audience of people coming back to read my articles and listen to my podcast, this book would simply not have happened.

    Thank You!

    Steve Glaveski

Rebroadcast: Focus on What You Can Control with Massimo Pigliucci

In this special rebroadcast episode, we go back into the archives for a conversation on the philosophy of Stoicism, and on focusing on what you can control - something of central importance in these trying times of COVID-19.

Massimo Pigliucci is a Professor of Philosophy at the City University of New York. His research is concerned with philosophy of science, the relationship between science and philosophy, and the nature of pseudoscience.

He received a Doctorate in Genetics from the University of Ferrara in Italy, a PhD in Botany from the University of Connecticut, and a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Tennessee. He has published over a hundred technical papers and several books.

Prof. Pigliucci has been awarded the prestigious Dobzhansky Prize from the Society for the Study of Evolution. He has been elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science "for fundamental studies of genotype by environmental interactions and for public defense of evolutionary biology from pseudoscientific attack."

In the areas of outreach and critical thinking, Prof. Pigliucci has published in national magazines such as Skeptic, Skeptical Inquirer, Philosophy Now, and The Philosopher's Magazine, among others. He has also been elected as a Consultant for the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

Pigliucci penned the wildly successful "Rationally Speaking" blog and podcast (rationallyspeaking.org) and maintains a blog - the namesake of his latest book -  called How to be a Stoic.

Towards the end of the show we started chatting about genetically modified and AI augmented humanity which will form the basis of another chat with Massimo in the future, but for now, please enjoy my conversation on Stoicism and how it can help you in your personal and professional life with the one, the only...Massimo Pigliucci.

Episode #391: Get Rich and Die Trying with John Roa

Episode #391: Get Rich and Die Trying with John Roa

At the age of twenty-six, John Roa founded a tech-consulting and design firm,  ÄKTA,  that he sold for a fortune to Salesforce.

His account of his rise from a self-described below-average student, to becoming a poster boy for the ambitious, successful young entrepreneur, to nearly destroying himself in the process is the subject of his book, A Practical Way to Get Rich . . . and Die Trying.

Roa's twenty-year-long journey from being dead-broke to wealth he never imagined is an absurd and often comical story of talent, luck, risk, rapidly changing technology, larger-than-life personalities, sex, gambling, and excessive alcohol and drug consumption.

We covered lots of ground in this conversation, including:

    • How Roa went from a six-figure debt to multi-millionaire before the age of 30
    • The toxic lifestyle he led while building his company, AKTA
    • The psychotic breakdown he experienced, which forced him to sell his company
    • And the lessons learned along the way about business and life

Listeners of this show will know that I am an advocate for balance, and Roa’s tale serves as a cautionary one that I hope entrepreneurs listening to this will learn from.

With that, I bring you the one and only, John Roa.

We are the only company to make the AFR/BRW Fast 100 for 8 years from 2009 to 2017. We are ranked in the Power Retail Top 100 websites.

From 2013 to 2018 Booktopia was a finalist across multiple categories for the Online Retailer Industry Awards and won Best Online Store in 2018.

We are proudly 100% Australian owned and love what we are achieving here. I started Booktopia in February 2004 on a budget of $10/day as a side project. All of this has been accomplished with no external investment. We simply sold more books and reinvested the proceeds.

I have been in business with my brother, sister & brother-in-law for the past 21 years.

Booktopia has 13,000 sqm of office and warehouse and it is our stock holding of 150,000 titles and ability to ship books immediately that is proving to separate us from any local competitors.

We also have a flat fee of $6.95 per order for as many books as you want.

Our philanthropic program has donated $750K of books & cash to literacy based projects, writers' festivals & readers' conferences including indigenous literacy programs.

Episode #380: Rising From the Startup Ashes with Michael Fox

Episode #380: Rising From the Startup Ashes with Michael Fox

Michael Fox is an entrepreneur and investor, best known for co-founding Shoes of Prey, the online retail startup that raised US$25M and grew its team to 200 people, before lagging demand forced the company to famously call it a day in 2019. Today, he heads up plant-based meat alternative company, Fable Foods Co.

Michael joined me to unpack the Shoes of Prey journey, the highs, the lows, the lessons learned and on being a proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes.

We touched on so many big ticket items, but three that stood out for me were:

1 - how so-called market validation can lead startups astray if it is not performed carefully

2 - why raising venture capital isn’t always necessary for startup success and can sometimes come at a detriment to it

3 - how Michael consciously uncoupled from his wife Jodie but continued to work together as co-founders at Shoes of Prey for another 7 years

We unpacked this and a ton more, so strap yourself in for an enlightening conversation with the one and only, Michael Fox.

    Topics Discussed:

    • Michael’s early years as a lawyer and why and how he got out
    • The early days of Shoes of Prey
    • Organic growth v venture-backed growth
    • Market research and validation - how it can set you astray
    • Conscious customer feedback v unconscious reality
    • What Michael would do differently next time
    • Ethical manufacturing
    • Media backlash
    • Laying staff off empathetically
    • Ethical manufacturing
    • The cost of employee engagement and retention
    • Being transparent without compromising employee motivation
    • The importance of not deriving your entire self worth from one thing
    • Conscious uncoupling
    • Humility and ego amidst turmoil
    • Why it can be darkest before the dawn
    • Why 2019 was Michael’s best year
    • Fable Food Co and its mission of ending industrial agriculture

While this conversation represents a slight departure from the usual fare on Future Squared, I figured it would bring a lot of value to listeners when it comes to both living a long and healthy life yourself, as well as caring for any seniors in your life who you may not be able to physically be with during this time of COVID-19.

We unpacked many topics from the book, including:

    • Why body and mind is a false dichotomy
    • What to eat for a ripe old age
    • Exercise and mobility
    • The connection between sleep, anxiety and neurodegenerative disease
    • Community and the value of a flourishing social life
    • Maintaining meaning after retirement
    • The importance of learning

Episode #378: Steve Blank talks Virus Survival Strategies for Business

Episode #378: Steve Blank talks Virus Survival Strategies for Business

Steve Blank - considered by many to be the father of modern entrepreneurship - returns to Future Squared to talk COVID19 virus survival strategies for business.

Steve is credited with spearheading the customer development movement, which was popularised by his former pupil’s Eric Ries book, under the guise of the lean startup.

We discussed the specific steps that startup CEOs, and to an extent leaders at large organisations too, should be taking in order to not just survive COVID19, but with some luck, come out the other side stronger.

    Specifically, we talked:

    • Startup runway, and why it’s no time to move slowly if yours is short
    • Whether COVID19 is a 3 month, 1 year or 3 year problem
    • Whether you need a new business model and operating plan
    • New opportunities presented by COVID19
    • Managing board and investor expectations
    • Compassionate leadership
    • and more…

So with that, it is with much pleasure that I welcome back to the show, the one and only, Steve Blank.

Episode #377: Boosting Your Immunity with Lucas Aoun

Today I welcome back to the show biohacker, naturopath and human guinea pig, Lucas Aoun, who you might remember from episode 342.

Today, Lucas’ purpose and mission is to assist and empower people to reach their fullest potential, which he does through his company, Ergogenic Health.

Given the rapidly evolving and uncertain times we find ourselves in, I invited Lucas back onto the show to talk about the kinds of things we can be doing to boost our immune system. This is not to say that doing anything discussed in this show will prevent you from contracting COVID19 or will help you to recover quickly should you contract it, but that they are a number of precautionary measures that you could be taking, not just for COVID19, but to live a healthy and optimised life in general.

We touched on various immune boosters, such as:

    • Sleep
    • Nutrition
    • Supplements; and
    • Movement

So with that, strap yourself in for an immunity boosting conversation with Lucas Aoun.
