    Getting it right

Is there a way to scale a good decision so that it works not just for your business, but for society?

In our new podcast Getting it Right, we’re turning to the people who have the answers.

Getting it Right is all about hiring, buying, working with purpose and creating inclusive workplaces.

You’ll meet industry leaders who’ve gone above and beyond to provide opportunities for those who need them. You’ll also hear from the people who took those opportunities and ran with them.

Inclusive employment and social procurement is ultimately about people–and in Getting it Right, you’ll hear real people’s stories, you’ll learn the benefits of being curious and looking in the right places, and you’ll get ideas about how you can buy and hire with purpose.

Season 1: Host and former Socceroos captain Craig Foster mobilised his profile as a career footballer to start a career in human rights activism. And for Craig, social procurement was the key to unlocking one of his most successful activism endeavors to date.

Season 2: Host Rae Johnston gives you real-world skills and practical tips to create a more dynamic and diverse workforce; Rae unpacks the hiring processes that work and guides you on best-practice principles for recruiting.

Code-switching – Why some employees feel the need to “play a role” at work

We all have different ways of presenting ourselves in different situations. We might talk or act differently at work than we do around family and friends. It’s called code-switching.

But for people of diverse backgrounds, constantly changing who you are to fit in with a certain work culture takes an exhausting toll.

Dwayne Good is the founder of Aboriginal-owned travel company, InTravel Group. He’ll explain why the subtle codes we sometimes have to live by at work are out-dated. And how to create a workplace where employees don’t need to switch.

Putting the ‘social’ in ‘social enterprise’ - how an arts studio educates and connects women in need

Putting the ‘social’ in ‘social enterprise’ - how an arts studio educates and connects women in need

Social enterprises operate first and foremost to provide opportunities to those in need.

One way they can do so is in the name itself: by providing social connection.

The Social Studio in Collingwood does exactly that by providing education and teaching opportunities to refugee women from a wide range of backgrounds. CEO Dewi Cooke details how the Studio’s free fashion school not only provides refugee women a path to a meaningful and satisfying career, but also fosters social connections for its students and teachers.

Teacher and student Muhubo Sulieman shares her experience since joining the studio, including her first exhibition at a gallery, showcasing work inspired by her early life in Somalia.

Hear how Dewi, Muhubo and the Social Studio connect diverse communities in the latest episode of Getting it Right with Craig Foster.

From the inside out – how one social enterprise helps people design a career after prison

When Phoebe was released from prison, she got busy looking for work, submitting applications for dozens of jobs in her quest to start life afresh.

But as she applied for jobs in a competitive job market, Phoebe’s passion for creativity, her university degrees and her experience as a graphic designer were no match for the stigma of a prison stint.

That is, until she came across one social enterprise creative agency - Green Fox Studio.

Profit is not a dirty word – classic social enterprise traps and how to avoid them

A social enterprise might have the very best of intentions and even the very best ideas, but those intentions and ideas don't amount to much if the enterprise goes broke.

You’ll have a hard time making an impact when you’ve got a perfect solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

So, when is ‘good for the world’ also ‘good for business’?

OC Connections’ Steve Betinsky spent the first part of his career in the corporate world before making the move into not-for-profits.

His mix of expertise means he can see the huge opportunities for social enterprises that others often don’t, and he knows exactly what to do to make the most of them.

In this episode of Getting it Right, Steve tells host Craig Foster about the “sudden jolt” that shifted his career and how he applies his corporate business experience to not-for-profit sustainability.

Bringing it together – how a network of social enterprises multiplies impact

Bringing it together – how a network of social enterprises multiplies impact

Social enterprises exist so that nobody has to go it alone – so why should those enterprises have to go it alone?

In Victoria, they don’t. Social Enterprise Network Victoria (SENVIC) was founded by pioneers who knew space couldn’t develop unless everyone was working together: sharing advice, collaborating, and helping each other make the most impact possible.

SENVIC’s CEO, Nick Verginis, knows the value small businesses can offer not only their customers and employees, but to each other. His grandparents all ran small businesses after coming to Australia from Greece and relied on other small businesses to make it work.

In the social enterprise space, this is even more important. Nick shares how enterprises can multiply each other’s impact by working together, and details how a strong network of enterprises creates a greater range of opportunities for its community.

From park ranger to change maker — Building better futures for Aboriginal Australians with Wamarra co-founder Hayden Heta

From park ranger to change maker — Building better futures for Aboriginal Australians with Wamarra co-founder Hayden Heta

Hayden Heta’s journey to founding his own construction company didn’t begin on a sawdust-covered worksite.

He was initially a park ranger, before moving into a government role, but it didn’t begin in the parks or the office, either. Instead, it was on the sidelines of the football field, where Hayden coached a team of men in their early 20s, that the idea really began to take shape.

After hearing repeatedly how his players were struggling to find work in construction, Hayden threw his own hat into the ring, and thus began Wamarra, a self-performing contractor connecting Aboriginal people with meaningful careers through long term and sustainable employment.

Hayden shares how his experience as a Wiradjuri man, park ranger and government employee inform his decision-making at Wamarra, and explains why understanding social procurement (and teaching others) is such an important first step.

Welding from a wheelchair and running a mailroom team with AI — Mark Golotta’s unorthodox and rewarding career

Welding from a wheelchair and running a mailroom team with AI — Mark Golotta’s unorthodox and rewarding career

Mark Golotta loved welding – he loved improving his craft and contributing to projects of all shapes and sizes. So, after narrowly surviving a motorcycle crash, the only thing on Mark’s mind during rehab was his return to work.

However, welding in a wheelchair is about as difficult as it sounds. Mark tried anyway, even after going bankrupt and being made redundant in favour of faster welders. With the help of Ability Works Australia, he managed to find employment again, but as the work grew more demanding and the projects became bigger and more unwieldy, Mark and Ability Works CEO Sue Boyce knew they needed a new plan.

The pair set about assessing Mark’s skills and passions in order to find work that better suited his new circumstances – and Mark now heads up his own team in an entirely different capacity.

In this episode of Getting it Right, host Craig Foster poses the question: how much more effective could your organisation be if you re-evaluated the skills of the people you already employ?

Introducing... Getting it Right, with Craig Foster

Introducing... Getting it Right, with Craig Foster

When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, former Socceroos captain Craig Foster’s phone started ringing off the hook.

The popular Australian footballer realised how lucky he’d been to follow his passion and had mobilised his enormous profile in the sporting and media world to become a human rights activist.

So when that phone started ringing, he started doing everything in his power to get as many Afghan women as possible out of the country, to safer ground in Australia.

The next round of phone calls were from major companies offering jobs and support for the newly arrived Afghan community. They secured jobs and training, and it opened Craig’s eyes to social procurement as the key to unlocking good outcomes for both the women and the employers.

If you’ve ever had someone take a chance on you, you’ll understand how important that open door can be.  If you’re able to make new hires, sign off on contracts and write policies, it’s critical you're reaching the right people.

It’s critical you get it right.

Getting it Right is all about hiring, buying and working with purpose.

You’ll hear from industry leaders who’ve gone above and beyond to provide opportunities for those who need them – and you’ll hear from the people who took those opportunities and ran with them.

You’ll also learn how to create social impact through your supply chain from people who’ve been involved in the process.
