In fact, I wonder if we are shooting ourselves in the foot more that we want to admit. Many years ago, the comedian George Carlin lambasted pro-lifers for our inconsistencies—and poor messaging. To a large degree, I think he was right. Things have not changed much. We can do better, be encouraged. This show is to throw my two cents into the mix.

40 million people have stopped going to church in the last 30 years.  In 2019, the year before COVID, far more protestant churches closed than opened in the US. The average congregation size is now less than half what it was in 2000. 1/3 of churchgoers are 65 or older. Summary, far fewer churches, even so, each still is suffering decreasing attendance, and is notably greying. 

Per Christianity Today, church closures are predicted to snowball. By 2025, 100,000 North American churches could close their doors.  Someone called it the Great Dechurching. This is happening at the very same time that so many Americans are feeling increasingly anxious and lonely. New survey shows that one in three said they feel lonely at least once a week. Worse, one in 10 Americans say they feel lonely every day. But, they are not thinking that churches are the answer. Sad. What’s up?

Left intuitional church altogether? Welcome. This might be just what you are looking for. Is this a new list of things to do so that your spiritual walk would finally just take off? Not at all. Your job as a disciple of Jesus has never been about how much you do or do not do. Listen and let this sink in. Discipleship is not about become more like Jesus—at least not directly. How are you going to do that anyway? What muscle group? That’s been your problem and why you fall short so often. No judgment. Instead, discipleship is about becoming more dependent upon Jesus and His Sprit. Those are two different things. Right? Is it beginning to make sense?

Is it helpful to be reminded that you are fighting a war against yourself? And that ‘self’ has a lot of very powerful brain chemicals—it is more powerful than your prefrontal cortex. If you have been shamed that your situation what it is because you don’t have the stuff, the faith, the will, you are the problem, this will be really good news. That is only partly true. Trying harder will fail—I promise you. Here’s a better way. Nothing magical, or tricky. It’s just the basic old fashion gospel. In fact, in this show we are going to explode the largely false notion we moderns have about free will. This will definitely get me some emails and trolling. Bring it on. Let me know what you think.
