Upgrading Your Vagus Nerve for Better Bone Health With Dr. Navaz Habib

Upgrading Your Vagus Nerve for Better Bone Health With Dr. Navaz Habib

Have you ever stopped and marveled at the intricate design of the human body? It contains trillions of cells, 78 different organs, and more than 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Over 7 trillion nerves form the complex nervous system, which is the central portal to all body systems, including our bones.

Within the nervous system is the vital nerve in charge of involuntary biological processes. The Vagus nerve is the most vital element of the parasympathetic nervous system. But what exactly does it mean in simple terms? How does the Vagus nerve work, and what does it have to do with our health? Does it have anything to do with whether or not we get Osteoporosis?

Today, I have an expert on the Vagus nerve, and he's here to explain the vital things we must know about it. He also shares tips on stimulating the Vagus nerve for better health.

Dr. Navaz Habib is the author of Activate Your Vagus Nerve and the recently released Upgrade Your Vagus Nerve. He is the host of The Health Upgrade Podcast

Dr. Habib graduated as class valedictorian from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2010 and went on to practice traditional chiropractic for years until he utilized the power of functional medicine to transform his health. He is the founder of Health Upgraded, an online functional health consulting clinic supporting optimal health by elevating the awareness and function of the Vagus nerve.

Inflammation Is a Root Cause of Osteoporosis With Dr. Tom O’Bryan

Are you diagnosed with Osteoporosis and have no idea how it happened? It’s important to identify the root causes of Osteoporosis, which can be different for each person. But, there are some common factors, one of which is inflammation.

Now, we know that inflammation in itself is not a bad thing. However, a majority of all chronic diseases are linked to excessive or chronic inflammation, and Osteoporosis is no different.

Today, Dr. Tom O'Bryan and I talk about the effect of inflammation on our health and how different inflammatory drivers, such as food, bugs, toxins, and our lifestyle, could affect our bone health.

Dr. O'Bryan is considered the Sherlock Holmes for chronic disease. He teaches that recognizing and addressing the underlying mechanisms that activate an immune response is the map to the highway toward better health. He holds teaching faculty positions with the Institute for Functional Medicine and the National University of Health Sciences.

Avoid These Ingredients If You Have Osteoporosis With Mira Dessy

Avoid These Ingredients If You Have Osteoporosis With Mira Dessy

During childhood and early adulthood, our bones develop their strength, but as we age, our bones lose calcium, causing bone thinning. A solution to that issue is embracing a bone-friendly diet and lifestyle to strengthen our bones or minimize age-related bone loss.

However, the best diet to prevent osteoporosis is not just eating calcium-rich foods. It’s also about avoiding certain foods and ingredients that can impact your bone health when consumed in large quantities.

You might find it surprising that some ingredients you thought were good for you are harming your bones and overall health. And that's what I'm here to discuss with my guest, Mira Dessy, better known as The Ingredient Guru.

A holistic nutrition professional, author, and popular public speaker, Mira knows that it's not just what you eat but what's in what you eat. We also know you can't just give up dark chocolate or coffee and other food additives, so we're providing you with healthy options so you can start gradually making healthy swaps to what's on your kitchen table.

Are you curious about what ingredients to watch out for? Let's jump into another informative episode of the Happy Bones, Happy Life podcast!

Osteoporosis Treatment 101 With Craig and Margie Bissinger

Osteoporosis is a common chronic disease, especially for people aged 50 and up. It is a silent disease, meaning it often has no symptoms.

If you have osteoporosis, you are more likely to fracture or break a bone if you fall over. Everyone’s bones become weaker as they age, but this process happens too quickly in some people.

Women often rapidly lose bone after the onset of menopause. So, what can you do to protect your bones and prevent osteoporosis?

In this special episode, I get interviewed by my husband, Dr. Craig Bissinger, about the exciting and new information I learned from over 50 health experts featured in the upcoming Natural Approaches to Osteoporosis and Bone Health Summit on January 15-21, 2024.

Onero Osteoporosis Strength Training with Dr. Claudia Tamas

Onero Osteoporosis Strength Training with Dr. Claudia Tamas

We want to be safe when exercising. That's very, very important. Nobody wants a fracture. But because of that, we've taken it too far. And we need an opportunity to improve our bone density through a safe strength training program.

Onero™ is a program that offers exactly this.

In this episode, I interviewed Dr. Claudia Tamas, a physical therapist and director of women's health at Natural Medicine and Rehabilitation in New Jersey.

Dr. Tamas has implemented the Onero™ program at her clinic - a strength training method developed in Australia based on over a decade of research showing its benefits for bone health.

I was fascinated to learn how Claudia safely trains her patients using this high-intensity progressive resistance approach. She sees fantastic results like increased bone density scores and stories of improved strength from her participants.

We also heard from Pat, a physical therapist who graduated from the Onero™ program. She shared how she gained new strength levels even with her fitness background. I can't wait to start the program myself in January!

I hope you find this conversation as informative and inspiring as I did. See you at the next episode!

Navigating Your Osteoporosis Treatment Plan With Irma Jennings, INHC

Navigating Your Osteoporosis Treatment Plan With Irma Jennings, INHC

Navigating the treatment for osteoporosis can be overwhelming. You may get this diagnosis after your doctor has ordered some blood work. After seeing the results, they recommend calcium, vitamin D, and exercise.

But this is not enough. Focusing mainly on medications, supplements, and general exercise advice without further exploring other factors or options is insufficient.

Today's guest, Irma Jennings, shows us how having the right support makes all the difference. Irma is an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and osteoporosis patient navigator.

With over 13 years of specialized experience in bone health, she offers various programs to guide clients through testing, appointments, and developing the right treatment plan. Irma is helping patients feel empowered and in control of their care.

As for tips to get the most from your doctor appointments, Irma stresses coming prepared. And while it's good to ask questions, try not to put doctors on the defensive. Finding the right balance and team is critical to overcoming any confusion.

I hope you find this interview as insightful as I did. As always, take care of yourself, and keep taking steps for strong, healthy bones!

“I recently was in osteoporosis or worked in the capacity as a navigator or advocate. And the doctor looked at her file and said, ‘Why aren't you on drugs?’ That was right after ‘Hello’. And I was like, ‘Uh-oh, this is not going to be good.” - Irma Jennings, INHC

Discover How Gratitude Boosts Health and Happiness With Margie and Craig Bissinger

Discover How Gratitude Boosts Health and Happiness With Margie and Craig Bissinger

Gratitude has always been a powerful practice for me, elevating my own mood and outlook every time I felt appreciation.

But what's so fascinating is that science has thoroughly studied gratitude, and the data shows how significantly it can impact health and well-being.

Extensive research has validated what I intuitively knew and now provides concrete proof of just how effective "good medicine" an attitude of gratitude can be.

In this Thanksgiving episode, I spoke with my husband, Dr. Craig Bissinger, about the health benefits of gratitude.

Dr. Craig Bissinger is an OB/GYN in Parsippany, New Jersey. Together, we discuss research showing that simple gratitude practices can significantly boost mood, and reduce stress and depression.

Today, you will learn specific practices for cultivating an "attitude of gratitude." These practices are simple, effective, and nearly free, yet they provide incredible value.

If you want to enhance your health, mood, and relationships, start infusing your life with gratitude through some of the impactful (yet simple practices) discussed in this episode. Happy Thanksgiving, and thank you for listening!

“In the attitude of gratitude, stress just can't survive. That's the beauty of this. It's the antidote to stress. And, you know, we live in [an] extremely stressful society. So the more gratitude we can incorporate, the better.” - Margie Bissinger, MS, PT, CHC

Calm Your Body and Strengthen Your Bones with Chantal Donnelly, PT

Calm Your Body and Strengthen Your Bones with Chantal Donnelly, PT

We all know that stress has negative effects on our bones and overall health. And we usually try to reduce it using mental strategies such as positive visualization.

But, actually, reducing stress through physical techniques is a more helpful and practical approach.

Today, you’ll learn some techniques from our guest, Chantal Donnelly, a physical therapist and author who will teach you how to reduce your muscle tension and, consequently, your stress levels.

Chantal explains how chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which can negatively impact bone density over time. She discusses emerging research suggesting bones may even play a role in regulating stress responses in the body.

We discuss how forward head posture, slouching, and chest breathing from stress can strain the neck muscles and compress the ribcage, making it difficult to breathe deeply.

Chronic muscle tension is linked to increased stress levels and risk of neck pain. But you’ll learn to reduce that tension in only 30 seconds daily.

Listen in to learn easy ways to soothe stress-induced muscle tension and naturally relax your way to stronger, healthier bones!

“If you have a home alarm system, and a squirrel runs across your roof, and that sets off the alarm, and the fire department shows up, you’ve got a problem with your alarm system, not with a fire. And that’s a lot like what chronic pain and chronic stress, both, are.” - Chantal Donnelly
