Are progressive Christians really Christians? with David Wolcott

Are progressive Christians really Christians? with David Wolcott

Every religion holds to essential doctrines that make them distinct and identifiable from every other belief system. Christianity is no different. David Wolcott and I examine Progressive Christianity and their denial of the essential doctrines of the faith. Does this mean those who say they're progressive Christians are not Christian? We also talk about why many Christians today identify with moralistic therapeutic deism as their worldview, and their dependence on emotionalism.

Can you believe in God without evidence and reason?

Can you believe in God without evidence and reason?

What is faith? If you ask a Christian, they likely can't tell you. Christians, like many unbelievers, think faith is believing in something you can't see without evidence. Is it true that in order to have faith you can't ask for evidence? Is faith opposed to logic and reason? Shanda recaps her conversation with an atheist on social media and shares the results from a poll asking Christians to define faith. This episode will not only challenge you to examine what faith is, but it will challenge you to examine the evidence for God and what you put your faith in.

The Sexual Revolution, Feminism, and the Church with Terrell Clemmons

The Sexual Revolution, Feminism, and the Church with Terrell Clemmons

How did the sexual revolution impact the church? Why do many who grew up in the days of purity culture feel the message was damaging to those in the church? Terrell Clemmons from Salvo Magazine takes us back in time to the moral shift that led to the sexual revolution. We discuss why expressive individualism is hurting our culture, and why identity is linked to sexuality. This conversation is both eye opening and something the church must take note of.

Born this way - is that a reason to excuse sin?

Lady Gaga's 2011 song, Born This Way, was a hit because not only does it have a catchy tune, it has a catchy message: God accepts you the way you are because He makes no mistakes. Messages like these are a dime a dozen in the culture we're in. But what if they come from those in the church? Shanda discusses the catchy phrases that have made their way into the church but are accepted by Christians because God is sprinkled in there somewhere. She takes you through passages of Scripture that show the correct response to sin and why no one likes the message of original sin.  In fact, some pastors avoid it all together. You'll learn why the message of original sin is a must when sharing the gospel.

The most important skill you'll ever learn with Kathy Gibbens

Do you follow your emotions and regret it later? How can you prepare to think well and not be manipulated by the propaganda you'll see this election season? Christians often think that because God renews their minds by the word they don't have to learn logic. Is that true? Kathy Gibbens, host of the Filter It Through a Brain Cell podcast, is on the show to talk about why it's necessary to learn how to think. You'll hear about the most common fallacies Shanda and Kathy encounter on social media, and they share their favorite resources for an introduction to logic.

Can women study theology too? With Nikki Stull

Most women's Bible studies don't focus on theology as much as they focus on felt needs. Why is that? Isn't theology for women too? Nikki Stull from Women In Apologetics advocates for why every believer ought to be a theologian. We talk about:

    1. How does the average Christian study theology?
    2. Reasons Christians need both apologetics and theology.
    3. Some next steps for how to dive deeper into Bible study.

Episode 221: How do you know you're a Christian disciple?

Episode 221: How do you know you're a Christian disciple?

Everyone is someone's disicple because discipleship is not isolated to Christianity. A disciple is a student or follower of a teacher or leader. With a definition like that, it's easy to see we are all someone's disciple. Whatever you give your mind to will form your worldview. As a student of the word, you have a responsiblity to guard who you allow in it. In this episode, we discuss:

    1. What do we mean when we say discipleship is not isolated to Christianity?
    2. What is the responsibility of a disciple (student)?
    3. How do you choose teachers who are equipped to disciple you?

The recommended Bible passage for this episode is Mark 4 - The Parable Of The Sower. Jesus teaches us about the responsibility of the learner and why it all begins with the motivation to hear.

How to pray and nurture a solid prayer life

How to pray and nurture a solid prayer life

As you get ready to start a new year, if there is one spiritual goal worth making it's to nurture your prayer life. But how do you pray? Some think the Lord's prayer is meant to be memorized and recited, but Jesus gave it to us as a model for prayer. Shanda will teach you how to pray through each section of the Lord's prayer and tell you what to do when you don't feel like praying. Our prayer lives are too easy to neglect, but there is a way to be devoted to praying and talking to God.

The importance of traditions and the appeal to tradition fallacy

What are your Christmas traditions? Traditions are passed on from one generation to the next and binds families throughout generations. Shanda talks about the importance of traditions and how they help adjust with major life changes such as moving and deaths in the family. You'll also hear about the appeal to tradition fallacy. Has someone in your family ever said you can't change plans because this is the way it's always been done? Recognizing this fallacy will help you prepare for conversations like this.

Christmas myths and legends: Should Santa be included in your Christmas?

It's easy to see that Christmas is commercialized in our culture, but does that mean Christians shouldn't celebrate it? What about the Christians who celebrate Christmas and do Santa with their kids? Is that a sin? Shanda talks about Christmas myths and legends and the importance of a Christian's abiliity to explain why the virgin birth doesn't fall into either of these genres. Finally, Shanda touches on the "Christmas is pagan" debate and how to respond.

The temple of God of old and today. The beauty of Immanuel, God with us

The temple of God of old and today. The beauty of Immanuel, God with us

God with man is what makes Christianity unique to any other religion. To dwell among us is the heart of God. In the Old Testament, we see David's desire to build a house for God. But even David understood that no house could hold the presence of God. When Jesus walked the earth, God took on flesh and dwelt among us. The angel proclaimed, "Immanuel, God with us." It was a concept too great to fathom. Now that Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father, His desire is to still dwell among us, but the temple is not the same. Shanda talks about the temple of God in the Old Testament, New Testament, and today. Immanuel, God with us will mean so much more to you than ever before.

The three falls of Genesis and their significance to Christianity with Albert Leon

How important is Genesis to Christianity? It depends on who you ask. Many Christians believe Adam and Eve weren't real historical figures. Some don't believe Genesis is foundational to our understanding of Christianity. Albert Leon is on the show to discuss Genesis 1-11. We break up these chapters into: Creation, Fall 1 (Adam and Eve), Fall 2 (The Flood), Fall 3 (Babel). Get your note taking tools out. It's going to be a great discussion and educational too.

The victim mentality leads to a thankless generation

The victim mentality leads to a thankless generation

What are the indicators of the victim mentality? Excuses and blame go as far back as Genesis 3 and we are all susceptible to it. But what happens when we nurture a culture of people with a victim mentality? We get a thankless generation. Paul told Timothy that the last days would be difficult because people are thankless. With the rise of critical race theory and an oppressor/oppressed view of society, it is no wonder more people see themsevles as victims. Shanda takes you through scripture to learn how to keep your eyes on God's blessings in a thankless generation.

211: The self-love lie! On repeat!

Does the Bible tell us to love ourselves? Many Christian women believe it does. They always use the analogy that you have to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others with theirs. While the Bible does not promote self-loathing, it does talk to us about loving God and loving others. Shanda also talks about how to properly do self-care in a culture that is all about me, myself, and I. Listen to this archived episode and be reminded that self-love is a lie!
