171 - In Baseball, Anything Can Happen w/ Mike Felder

On July 18, 1994, the Houston Astros overcame an 11-0 deficit in the Astrodome to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 15-12. Houston Astro outfielder, Mike Felder, drove in the tying run in the Astros' 11-run sixth inning and later in the frame scored the go-ahead run. Felder, a 10-year Major League veteran, joins the show this week to talk about that game, his career and how to hit a knuckleball among other things. Felder went on to become a Major League and collegiate coach - he now coaches baseball at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California.

ERRATA - According to Baseball-Reference.com, Mike Felder hit his first home run in County Stadium, Milwaukee.  Paul Gibson, a southpaw from Southampton NY, played 9 seasons in the Major Leagues with the Tigers, Mets and Yankees. He won 22 games, saved 11 in 319 MLB appearances. This is an MiLB write-up on El Paso's 35-21 win over Shreveport.

170 - How the West Was Won

The Houston Astros were in first place in the American League West only 18 game days in 2023, but they ended the year with another divisional title and a first round bye. In this episode Craig and Rex look at the Astros furious final weekend run to the title, Kyle Tucker's bizarre did he or didn't he chase to a 30/30 season and the four wild card match-ups. We wrap up the episode discussing the movement to retire Roberto Clemente's number 21 league wide and we return to the Astros' retired number fetish.

Errata; "Kill the Umpire" (1950) starred Wiliam Bendix and Una Merkel. Did Craig really say, "Houston played good?"

In part 2, our recent interview with Erik McLaren, a writer and host of Religious Wars,  a podcast that looks at history through a lens of conflicts in faith. Erik joins us to discuss his thoughts on how religious themes, ideas and images are presented in Western popular music.  The conversation includes Elvis Presley, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Joan Osborne and many more artists. We examined how different artists incorporate religious and spiritual themes into their music. Thank you to Erik for sharing his time with Hooks & Runs.

160 - Astro Fans May be a Little Spoiled

This week the Hooks & Runs, giddy from Houston's thrilling 12-11 win over Texas Monday afternoon, examine the complaints and criticisms against Dusty Baker. Is it possible that after owning the American League West lock, stock and barrel since 2017 Astro fans have become spoiled by success? Texas is not going to give this race away -- Houston will have to earn it, there will be bumps along the way, and Dusty Baker will forever be Dusty Baker and all that entails.

This week we discuss the continued drama in Oakland and Las Vegas, whether Luis Arraez is a legitimate .400 threat, the Houston Astros' dire injury situation, and a new Beatles song on the books thanks to artificial intelligence - will AI be good, bad or indifferent for musicians and music fans?

157 - Steely Dan, Quantum Criminals & the Reality of What Is w/ Joan LeMay

London & New York based artist Joan LeMay (a Texas native) has illustrated a fascinating new book authored by Alex Pappademas, "Quantum Criminals: Ramblers, Wild Gamblers and Other Sole Survivors from the Songs of Steely Dan" (Univ. of Texas Press 2023), released earlier this Spring.

Joan joins Hooks & Runs in this episode for a wild ride discussing the derelicts, drifters, slackers, scofflaws, hopeless romantics and mythical creatures that populate the iconic Steely Dan song catalog.

Her paintings brought to life familiar characters like Daddy G, the Major Dude, Snake Mary and dozens more, providing the visual and aesthetic foundation for this unique and entertaining project.

Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield accurately called "Quantum Criminals," "one of the sharpest, funniest, and best books ever about any rock artist." Hooks & Runs wholly concurs - this book is highly recommended.
