Using Music and Creativity to Teach Children Math | Marcus Blackwell

Using Music and Creativity to Teach Children Math | Marcus Blackwell

"Teachers are blown away because they'll give me the kids that say they hate math and I'm like, yeah, I'll take them. That's what I look for. And from there they'll do more work in my class the first day meeting me than they would have the entire semester. So this is really impactful."

Our featured trailblazer is Marcus Blackwell.

Marcus Blackwell is the CEO and Founder of Make Music Count, a math curriculum taught through music. He received a B.S in mathematics from Morehouse college and has played professional gospel piano since the age of 16.

Students are not performing well in mathematics. Marcus dedicates his energy to developing creative methods that convince students to embrace mathematics. His company is designed to go into the school systems to work directly with students connecting the mathematical dots where the traditional methods of teaching fall short. Marcus believes that he is able to connect well with students because he also struggled with math growing up and it was music that allowed him to eliminate the intimidation he had towards mathematics.

Don't Sit, Don't Settle | Dr. Eric Thomas, aka ET the Hip-Hop Preacher

“The version of you that you are right now is keeping you from being everything you should be. Who you are right now is responsible for why you're not where you supposed to be…. who you are is keeping you from being who you should be and your dreams though, are the only thing that's telling you “Come on. Let's go!” Your dreams are the only thing that's telling “You can do more. You can have more. You can be more! Come on, come on, come on! Don’t be comfortable. Don’t sit. DON’T SETTLE!”

Eric Thomas, aka E.T. The Hip Hop Preacher kicks off our first episode of the 2019 Trailblazers.FM Entrepreneurs series.

Dr. Eric Thomas, aka ET the Hip-Hop Preacher, is a motivational speaker, author, and minister known for his high-energy speaking engagements. He is CEO of his own consulting firm, and has worked with both Fortune 500 companies and professional sports organizations.

Born in Chicago in 1970, Thomas grew up in Detroit, where he dropped out of high school and spent several years living on the streets. During this period, he met a minister who successfully convinced him to return to school. Thomas eventually earned his bachelor's degree from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, where he also began preaching and working with at-risk youth.

In 2003, he moved back to Michigan and began working on his master's degree at Michigan State University. Ultimately, Thomas graduated from MSU with both a master's degree in K-12 administration and a Ph.D. in education administration.

While at MSU, he continued to preach and authored several books, including 2012's The Secret to Success and 2014's Greatness Is Upon You. Thomas has also released several albums setting his motivational talks to hip-hop music.

The Power of Being Relational | A Nicole Campbell

The Power of Being Relational | A Nicole Campbell

Being relational drives business. Your brand/business must be about more than just transactions in order for it to thrive. The beauty happens in between the transactions/deals. When you are relational, you step into the spaces between transactions, so to speak, and that step-in is what makes clients come back, makes them choose you, makes colleagues recommend you, and makes people want to work with you.

Our featured guest is A. Nicole Campbell.

Nicole (Nic) is a mom first, and everything else falls into place because of it. She's an MIT graduate and an attorney who has served in senior leadership positions for two billionaire hedge fund giants.

Nic recently transitioned to a new role, having founded Build Up Advisory Group (February, 2019). Her firm specializes in designing and building systems to help nonprofits, philanthropies, social entrepreneurs, and philanthropists thrive. She's working to scale it to create the kind of workplace she's always wanted to work in.

Build Up, Inc. is a boutique capacity builder that holistically supports leaders of color and projects and nonprofits led by people of color that serve under-resourced communities. Probably the first of its kind, and hopefully it can serve as a model for other fiscal sponsors.

Finding Balance in Your Passion | Craig The Barber®

Know your why! Why are you passionate about what you're passionate about? And why do you want to make that a career?

Our guest is one of those people who inspired me to launch Trailblazers.FM and was one of our very first conversations on the podcast back on on episode 7, Craig The Barber®.

Craig the Barber is Hollywood’s top source for men’s grooming needs, a role he has held for more than 10 years. But the true story is that Craig unknowingly began his journey toward becoming a master barber all the way back at the age of 14 years-old. Craig’s belief that being a well-groomed man does not mean going overboard and that any guy can take charge of his style and appearance with the right guidance.

Craig is a true example of how following one’s passion will lead you to never “work” a day in your life because you will always love what you do. As he says himself, “Life is meant to be lived, not worked!”

Navigating The 7 Cs of Deep End Leadership | Shawn Dove

Navigating The 7 Cs of Deep End Leadership | Shawn Dove

Deep end leaders know that they have a particular calling on their lives and their primary job in life is to discover their unique purpose and mission.

Our guest is a part of the Trailblazers.FM family and I'm so happy to have him be part of the 2019 Trailblazers Masterclass series. I'm happy to introduce Shawn Dove. Shawn was first featured on Trailblazers.FM episode 16.

In today's episode Shawn share some inspiration and wisdom about the 7 C’s of deep-end leadership:  Calling, Courage, Completion, Credibility, Collaboration, Change and Coaching.

Shawn Dove’s leadership mission mantra is “there is no cavalry coming to save the day in our communities. We are the iconic leaders that we have been waiting for; curators of the change we are seeking to see.” He has almost four decades of cross-sector leadership in the fields of youth development, community-building, philanthropy, arts education, leadership development and media literacy. He currently serves as the founder of the Corporation for Black Male Achievement, a consulting and publishing firm that produces community-building engagements and multi-media stories of loving, learning and leading by and for Black men and boys. Shawn is the co-author of I Too Am America: On Loving and Leading Black Men & Boys (January 2022), equal parts memoir, historical account of CBMA and a curated manifesto of various voices in the Black Male Achievement movement.

Most recently, Shawn served as the CEO of the Campaign for Black Male Achievement (CBMA), a national intermediary membership organization committed to ensuring the growth, impact and sustainability of leaders and organizations committed to improving the life outcomes for Black men and boys. Launched in 2008 at the Open Society Foundations (OSF) and spinning off into an independent entity in 2015, under Dove’s leadership CBMA leveraged more than $212 million in national and local funds, while connecting thousands of leaders and organizations on behalf of an emerging field of Black Male Achievement.
