What was ‘The Game of Change’ and how did it shape college basketball?

Sixty years ago, Mississippi State and Loyola met in the second round of the 1963 NCAA Tournament. The journey to that matchup, however, was anything but easy in a nation and in a sport still battling with racial segregation. “The Game of Change” required two competitive, daring programs, a cunning escape from Mississippi, and a willingness to challenge convention. The Chucker, 19nine’s resident historian, dives into this historic matchup.

What took the Big Ten so long to create a post-season tournament?

What took the Big Ten so long to create a post-season tournament?

Twenty-five years ago, the Big Ten finally launched a post-season conference tournament. After years of rejecting the move for an assortment of reasons ranging from academics to regular season integrity, the conference switched course and installed the Big Ten Tournament to cap to the 1997-1998 season. The Chucker, 19nine’s resident historian, explains the Big Ten’s long road to creating a post-season tournament and the 450,000 reasons the conference and its member institutions eventually reconsidered and relented.

No Fear In The Arena: Travis Diener's Unrivaled Leadership and Competitive Drive

Travis Diener’s rise to basketball stardom wasn’t supposed to happen. He wasn’t gifted athletically, pushed by trainers growing up, or born into a hotbed of basketball talent. He was average. At every level, critics rightly questioned everything that he wasn’t but forgot about everything that he was. From Marquette University to the NBA to the Italian League, Travis Diener was going to make it; he was going to be successful.

While Thor might have created thunder and lightning, Harlem Globetrotter Thunder Law brings the modern-day hammer every time he dunks. A high-flyer with a healthy disregard for gravity, Thunder has the hops to touch the sky and the power to rattle the rim every time he steps on the court. While you would be forgiven for thinking Thunder only means power, in this case, he also brings touch and aim as a master of several long-distance trick shots.

Thunder has been a record-breaking machine since landing with the Globetrotters, currently owning 11 Guinness World Records titles.

Georgetown 1984 | When the Hoyas became heroes and the champs

John Reagan - Georgetown Basketball History Project

    19Nine Hoya's Gear - https://19nine.com/collections/georgetown-university

In the early 1980s, an unlikely program commanded the nation’s college basketball
consciousness. An elite, exclusive Catholic institution in the nation’s capital better known for
churning out attorneys and politicians and with nary a trace of hardwood pedigree was suddenly at the center of the college basketball universe. The Georgetown Hoyas’ relentless and assertive brand of basketball, carefully choreographed by a Black coach in John Thompson and an all-Black roster, made them heroes in inner cities around the country and a target for a mostly white media. And unapologetically, Thompson did it his way and became the first Black basketball coach to win an NCAA title when his Hoyas defeated Houston 84-75 in Seattle’s Kingdome on April 2, 1984.

“I know I’m going to upset some people, but I can live with that,” Thompson said in a 1984
    interview.

Check back on Friday for our full interview with John covering the entire scope of Georgetown Basketball History.

Almost as soon as the Fab 5 arrived on the University of Michigan campus as the most heralded recruiting class in the history of college basketball, Wolverines head coach Steve Fisher began fielding questions about starting all five freshmen. But Fisher resisted until he no longer could. The Chucker, 19nine’s resident historian, explains.

Today we’ve got Mike Seilski Author. Sports Columnist. Radio host and host of my favorite sports podcast this year I Am Kobe. I know because I was reminded that I apparently listened to 31 days of podcasts last year.

Mike Sielski is a sports journalist and author. He has been a sports columnist at the
Philadelphia Inquirer since 2013 and was named the top sports columnist in America by the Sports Editors of the Associated Press.  He writes columns and deeper stories and books in my spare time. My latest, "The Rise," is about Kobe Bryant.

The Crosstown Classic | Xavier vs. Cincinnati

The Crosstown Classic | Xavier vs. Cincinnati

There are rivalries, and then there is the Crosstown Classic.

The annual showdown between the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University is one of the most heated and contentious matchups in all of sports.

    Xavier Gear - https://19nine.com/collections/xavier-musketeers

    Cincinnati Gear - https://19nine.com/collections/cincinnati-bearcats

From the Huggins handshake-less finish to a cowbell from the stands, I don’t think that’s what SNL Skit meant when they were asking for more cowbell. There is nothing quite like the rivalry between the two schools separated by a mere 2.7 miles.

It is my favorite rivalry in college basketball (sorry, UNC-Duke) and it returns on December 10th when the Cincinnati Bearcats battle the Xavier Musketeers in the 90th edition of the Crosstown Shootout. And while Cincinnati holds the 51-38 series lead. Xavier has won 11 of the past 15 contests.

In the 2008 NCAA Tournament, Davidson, a school of fewer than 2,000 students, embraced its role as David against college basketball’s Goliaths.
