Dylan Hogan, aka Major Trouble! DJ and Producer

My guest is Dylan Hogan, aka Major Trouble - The founder of BRC Snow Club, resident DJ for Disco Donutz (Heavy Petting Zoo), and former board member of Airpusher and Sextant Camp.

I talked with him in March, 2024. To introduce him to you, I am using the words of Joel Kristopher, Zookeeper at Heavy Petting Zoo, who recently posted about his friend, Major Trouble:  Huge! Massive! Epic! Shout out to my brother from another Unicorn, Dylan Hogan, aka Major Trouble for all that he has recently accomplished, with no plans of slowing down.

Last year Dylan, with the help of his hottie in crime, Rachael Gingery, created the Black Rock City Snow Club, who brought the 1st Ski, Sled and Snowboard hill to Burning Man. During this same time, he also dove deep into music production, producing 8+ original house bangers to fill his set with at Breakfast of Champions. Keep it up Boo! I’m proud of you! (abbreviated)

How to feed 700 artists/builders in 4 days

Dazzle was a guest of the podcast in 2017 when she talked about BRC Wheels on Meals. 2024 will be her 11th  year since she first started this project delivering hot meals to art build crews of Black Rock City during build week.  Armed with a generator and a microwave on a flat-bed trailer and gifting sporks, Dazzle and her crew have delivered over 5000 meals over the years.  She also talks about her other passions, including bringing awareness to the mobility challenged  at Burning Man, educating people on fundraising and trying to retire from Burning Man.  You can catch Dazzle at Love Burn in Florida this February (yes! In a few weeks) and what its like to try and pack for a burn that you fly to. She will also be at Pagan Bunny Burn with her project Bunny Bytes, Unscruz in May where she celebrates her BD every year and Juplaya in July at the Black Rock Desert and of course ttitd in August at her new camp, Playa Pauls concierge services camp.  Outside of Burning Man, she also volunteers in her local community at a performing arts center.

Dave Keane talks about Paradisium, 2022

Last time Suz and Dave Keane talked, he and his crew were making The Folly in 2019 and Dave was lead builder of Temple, 2018.  Most recently, his crew is ready for their next big-art build called Paradisium, aka the Folly Forest.  We hear from crew member Paul Franke.  With 20-26 iconic trees making up a forest at Black Rock City in 2022, it’s meant to lose us in the art as we find all nooks and crannies and climb some of the trees in the forest.  The buzz about!  Learn about where it’s built, what is needed and how to help.  Even if you are not going to Burning Man this year, there’s plenty of fun volunteering for this art build currently in Oakland, California. The lovely Veronica, Folly Builders Project Manager, popped in at the end and introduced herself.

    Everywhen Project, 2022

What happens when a collection of Black Rock Juplaya camps decide to fund art by getting permits and selling tickets?

Meet the board of Everywhen Project, 2022 is working towards a week-long event at Black Rock Desert, 2022.  With over 2.5K members of their FB group, interest is growing and they are just getting started.  The board and the event grew out of camps regularly attending Juplaya at Black Rock Desert in Nevada.  With a passion for art, they developed a non-profit and a plan to obtain a permit for a ticketed event where a lot of the proceeds go to fund artists and their projects.  What is it like to get a larger event with permits, infrastructure, environmental stewardship and other important parts of a large, ticketed event.   Learn about how they are funding as much art as possible.

    Temple Builders Guild, 2022

Meet Tree Jay Lee from The Temple Builders Guild.  It’s a new group of temple builders who got together and figured out a way to handle temple build tools and to keep a collection of tools for the next temple build.  This involves transportation and even Airstream made into a kitchen that is ready to deploy meals to a large build crew for years to come.  It’s the start of what is infrastructure that is passed down from year to year.  Their mission is to make temple builds as well as  municipal, community art projects,  easier for the artist(s) and teams who build them by equipping them with the necessary equipment while reducing waste and increasing efficiency. If they can do it, so can your team.  Learn from them and save your collected legacy for the next crew!

Caveat Magister Talks about Turning Your Life Into Art

Caveat Magister Talks about Turning Your Life Into Art

Super Suz talks with Caveat Magister, Burning Man’s philosopher laureate. He’s the author of The Scene That Became Cities: what Burning Man philosophy can teach us about building better communities, and Turn Your Life Into Art: lessons in Psychomagic from the San Francisco Underground. His newest book is a synthesis of the San Francisco underground art scene and explains how they create highly personal and potentially transformative, designed experiences for participants. Corporations are trying to do this too with marketing and branding, however, Caveat explains why it’s rag-tag artists who have the most potential for psychomagic.

Renegade Burn, 2021 All About the Art Car

Renegade Burn, 2021 All About the Art Car

Some have said that 2021, besides being a virtual burn year, was all about the art cars.  That’s debatable, I know.  Instead of debating, we hear from two art car owners who called in to one of my Tuesday night shows on Shouting Fire online radio.  We talked about their experience at the Renegade Burn with their art cars.  This recording was made on August 28th, 2021.  I played some recorded mutant vehicle DJ sets, then we hear from Scotty, the  owner of the  AntiDysentery Art Car.  I played some more music and then we hear from Dustin, the owner of Shelly the Crab Art Car.  Both talk about their cars and what it was like to drive it around the playa in 2021 during the Black Rock Desert Renegade Burn.

This time, his new project is his TTITD website for NFT’s that features honoraria artists and helps them fund new projects and earn income for their existing art. “Patronage IS Participation!” is Tex's new mantra. A portion of the NFT purchases will go towards a donation to Burning Man Project as well.  This is an independent website and group of artists who’ve stepped up and taken leadership in the new digital artspace.  Four months of work comes together soon and those who are curious will get to see what becomes of burner NFT’s when TTITD launches in late June, 2021.

    Personal Space At BRC

    Personal Space At BRC

7-year burner, Matthew Shapard, aka Shap, is a San Diego based burner who has created several wearable performance art pieces to bring out to Black Rock City as well as his local Regional.   His camp “Yes, And” hosts performance space and serves cheesy treats at San Diego’s regional YOUtopia.  His recent project, Personal Space, is something that is very relevant for us today with our six feet or more perimeter space that each of us is trying to live with every day.  We talk about what it was like for Shap to keep a personal space at Burning Man, which was Shap not giving consent for anyone to enter his circle of personal space throughout the whole time he wears the ring.  What was that like? Shap also reminds us that we don’t have to “go big” to participate by bringing art to Burning Man and the regionals.  Lastly, Shap advocates  how we can help out San Diego Collaborative Arts which is their local Project 501(c)3.

    Eric Steven Rankin, the Keymaster

    Eric Steven Rankin, the Keymaster

Meet the Keymaster.  Have you ever wondered if aliens or dimensional beings ever visited Burning Man?  I have.  My guest, Eric Steven Rankin, first  became interested in the possibility of other worlds and dimensions in the 1970’s.  This led him to his work on Sonic Geometry, which is his theory and study of geometric symmetry found throughout our universe in physical space and sound.   Eric is also a burner.  We’ll hear several of his burner stories including his “close encounters” of the Playa kind. Did you know that some of his material is found in the graphic art of this year’s Burning Man poster?  By the way, the Multiverse poster is a fundraising opportunity for Burning Man. Find it at the Burning Man website.   Nicole Bloss, the artist of that poster, is a guest of my podcast.  She talked about Eric in our recorded conversation and then she introduced me to him.
