Private debt of senior secured loans zijn in trek bij institutionele beleggers. Ze kunnen hoge rendementen bieden tegen een relatief laag risico. Het geheim van de smid is het kiezen van bedrijven met bedrijven met een duurzaam concurrentievoordeel, relatief ongevoelig voor conjuncturele schommelingen.  Vooral Amerikaanse bedrijven zijn volgens Invesco's portfoliomanager Raman Rajagopal  goed gepositioneerd: minder gevoelig  voor geopolitieke spanningen en flexibelere arbeidsmarkt liggen daaraan ten grondslag. Even Ciaran Fitzpatrick, head of ETF servicing Europe at State Street, is surprised to see phenomenally strong growth in true active ETFs this year. The latest generation of ETF products, also dubbed ‘ETF 3.0’, is rapidly making its way into portfolios of both institutional and retail investors. The US is leading but Europe is not far behind.

Speaking to Investment Officer for this IO Talks podcast, Fitzpatrick observed that while the true active ETFs have been around since 2008, the real growth is happening now. “Over 63 percent of flows in the US last month were into active ETFs, which I don’t think anyone expected. This is just huge, you know.”

Europe is following the US in the active space, Fitzpatrick said, but at this side of the Atlantic, it is still a small component of the overall ETF market. “You’re talking probably shy of 30 billion euro in true active ETF assets across Europe, whereas the overall market is about 1.6 trillion, which is, you know, very significant. The growth has not been as quick as in the US, but Europe is seen to be - I wouldn’t say behind the US - but obviously advancing at a different speed.”

In this IO Talks podcast interview, Peter Hughes, CEO and founder of Apex Group, and Pierre Weimerskirch, its Luxembourg head, discussed the firm’s strategic ambitions in Luxembourg, highlighting the region’s increasing dominance in the global investment landscape.

Hughes noted that despite Apex's global presence with over 100 offices, Luxembourg stands out in its strategic significance. "People want Luxembourg structures," he stated plainly, emphasising the jurisdiction's ascent in the investment world over the past decade.

Discussing the operational intricacies, Weimerskirch characterised Luxembourg as an essential “inbound jurisdiction.” The increasing volume of inbound business mandates a robust platform in Luxembourg, which integrates seamlessly with major financial hubs.

“Luxembourg is really an inbound jurisdiction for the business. We have to be best friends, with our colleagues in London, in New York, in Singapore, or wherever in the world. As Peter just said, it's just a global business. And Luxembourg is a platform for doing this global business,” said Weimerskirch.
