The Way of the Vulture Part III

The Way of the Vulture Part III

Chapter IV - Escaping the Vultures

We pick up on our series dedicated to self-protection as it relates to opportunistic predators. After a brief look at the unfair reputation real vultures receive, we return to the serial killers mentioned in the first chapter.

The episode touches upon some real-life examples of Gavin De Becker's survival signals, the double tap, an asymmetrical assault changing to symmetrical with the de-escalation fallout, tactical escape and a broader view of long-term self-protection - why empathy is important to protect the ones we love from society's scavenging predators.

Identity - A Discussion with Mo Teague

Identity - A Discussion with Mo Teague

Mo Teague is a teacher with a tremendous CV in both real-world application (military, professional and civilian) and martial arts training. His life has long been one of discovery, exploration and reality checks. It has also involved a lot of conflict. Much has been said and discussed about his external conflicts. However, on this episode we touch upon internal divisions through the concept of identity. Mo discusses how identities imposed upon us directly affect our choices and how we might craft our own identities in a positive way, laying the foundation on values and beliefs.

Mo is perhaps the biggest all round influence on my teaching methods and martial arts education. With the podcast now in its seventh season this discussion is long overdue.

The Way of the Vulture Part II

The Way of the Vulture Part II

As we pick back up on our "The Way of the Vulture" series focusing on opportunistic crimes and criminals, and the self-protection lessons we can take from them, we look at Opportunity Theory. This was an approach to criminology that the its adherents believed had more direct benefits than previous ideas. In this third chapter (second episode) we will look at how much of this idea holds up and what are its limitations.

Talking Pooh - A Discussion with Andy Gibney Discussion

Talking Pooh - A Discussion with Andy Gibney Discussion

Unified Fighting Systems founder, AG Martial Arts Centre owner, therapist and author, Andy Gibney joins the show for a look back at a childhood favourite. Taking the "Everything is Martial Arts" concept in an interesting direction, we look at the gentle world of A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh and discuss its influence and connections to martial arts.

Far from living up to the moniker "a bear with very little brain", Pooh might be a childhood gateway to critical thinking. Whereas owl presents us with the model of the flawed teacher. With fear being such an important area of understanding in self-protection, Piglet provides a certain perspective. Meanwhile Tigger and Eeyore provide us with opposite extremes of emotion whilst also potentially showing the benefits of enthusiasm and stoicism. There's a lot to unpack!

The Ballad of Igor Part I (Halloween Episode)

This year's Halloween episode is chapter one of a look at what might called the "Igor" psyche. Much the stock character of Igor and the monster he assisted to create (in some non-original versions of the story), this psyche is made of composite parts. We will explore this different parts by first covering the real criminal, Fizcko, assistant to the notorious Erzsebet Bathori, The Blood Countess.

We begin our study of opportunistic crimes and their unique brand of predator.

Chapter 1 - Detective Haarmann - Where we are introduced to a grisly opportunist who first terrified and then revolted the inhabitants of inter-war Hanover, Germany. Fritz "The Wolf-Man" Haarmann, a lazy, unintelligent, habitual crook and child molester, took full advantage of the desperate environment that surrounded him.

Chapter 2 - The Opportunistic Predator - We break down what a threat means in self-protection and focus on the opportunity element. This leads us on to criminals who are disorganised in their methods and focus on opportunity.

Star Wars: The Greatest Martial Movie in the Galaxy? (bonus episode)

Ahead of the mammoth self-protection/martial arts deep dive into Star Wars, I decided to record an audio version of an old article I wrote on the subject in the pages of "Martial Arts Illustrated". It's a little twee and less jaded than my current work - a bit like Luke Skywalker in the first film - but thought listeners might appreciate it for novelty value alone.

The Wisdom of Bears (& Dogs)

The Wisdom of Bears (& Dogs)

This special episode revisits the "Way of the Bear" theme first covered in the penultimate show of the second season (2019). Since losing my mother in 2021, I have become more reflective on what she taught me and its influence over my own teaching. Therefore,  this episode is dedicated to all the wise mothers who guide their children to become safer and stronger in life. It is especially dedicated to my mother in honour of her birthday on 20th March, UK's Mother Day occurring in the same month and International Women's Day also takes place in March.
