    Summer Camp Options #3

Armando interviews owners or key personnel of more Summer Camp providers.  Find out what these specific providers have available and whether or not their program might be for your child this summer.  Each provider explains what it is that kids and families can expect from their camps.  Also discussed is the ideal recipe for your child’s summer growth consisting of fun and games with the addition of an academic progress program tailor-made for your child's specific needs or requests.  No "cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all" academic program for you. This summer your child can grow stronger physically, learn new skills or sharpen artistic talents while also making academic progress to be ready for the new school year in the fall.  Help your child avoid the "summer slide" loss of knowledge experienced by so many students over the summer.

What is the NAF Academy? Interview with the Burbank USD NAF Director and the BUSD NAF Advisory Chair.

What is the NAF Academy? Interview with the Burbank USD NAF Director and the BUSD NAF Advisory Chair.

The NAF Academy (National Academy Foundation) is a nation-wide program available to high school students wishing to explore specific professional career opportunities.  The local NAF Academy is discussed by the Burbank USD NAF Director, Alyson Edge, and is joined on this podcast with the Burbank USD NAF Advisory Board Chair, Cynthia Wagner.  They are interviewed by Armando Salcido as he finds out which careers are covered through the NAF Academy, the classes that students take in each of the academies and the hands-on, practical skills that they learn about working in each of those specific fields.  Armando, Alyson and Cynthia also discuss the general information students learn regarding what it takes to land a job, hold a job and be successful in a job.  These include skills like resume writing, interviewing skills, punctuality, responsibility, personal presentation and reliability, among others.  The NAF Director, Alyson Edge, explains what is covered in each of the academies - the Business Academy, Engineering Academy and Medical Academy.  Cynthia Wagner, the NAF Board Chair, explains how community members can become involved with helping students acquire the skills necessary for success in their chosen field.

Student participation in the NAF Academy is a four year commitment (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th) and students usually sign up in January of the 8th grade, while in middle school.  If there are openings available in the NAF Academy those openings will be made available to students in the 9th grade and sometimes even in the 10th grade but usually all spaces are filled with the incoming 9th grade class.  Therefore, it is recommended that students learn about and sign up for the NAF Academy while in middle school so that they can get the most benefit from the NAF Academy in high school by being enrolled a full four years.

Visit the Burbank USD NAF website:  https://www.burbankusd.org/naf.  Get information on each of the academies or learn how to contact the Director, the Advisory Chair, or any other personnel involved with the NAF Academy.

In the podcast it is mentioned that the NAF Academy partners with the City of Burbank’s CREST Youth Employment program, which offers students ages 16 - 17 paid employment in which they receive job skills training as well as on-the-job training within a City of Burbank Department.  This is a link to information about that program: (https://www.burbankca.gov/web/management-services/crest-youth-employment).  The City of Burbank’s STEP program, which offers youth summer employment is also mentioned.  This is a link to more information about the STEP program:  https://www.burbankca.gov/web/management-services/step-youth-employment

CTE - Career Training for High School Students

CTE - Career Training for High School Students

Armando interviews Diana Dysthe, CTE Counselor for both John Burroughs and Burbank High Schools, and Sabrina Ruiz-Emmons, K12 Strong Workforce Program Pathway Coordinator for the Glendale Community College district area (hosted by Burbank USD).  Both ladies help students explore various possible career options, including some of the most highly paid and in-demand careers in today’s tough, skills-dependent, technology-heavy and very competitive job market.  The CTE program is described and information is provided with regard to the intention and purpose of CTE and how a successful CTE program can benefit students individually as well as the student’s family and even the general economy.  Find out how this can be.

There are discussions about specific careers for which students can get real on-the-job-type training.  Students can learn what it is like to work in those specific fields.  Examples of these possible careers include Arts Media Entertainment (which encompasses Animation, Digital Media Production, Photography, and Stage Craft Technology), Business and Finance (including Business, Real Estate and Information Technology), Industrial Arts (including Engineering, Aircraft and Small Engines, Digital Manufacturing and Construction), Health Science and Medical Technology (there is a Medical Academy available), Culinary Arts, and others.

If you have a son or daughter that does not yet know what he or she would like to do or which career path they should pursue or if you have a student that would simply like to learn about or explore different possible careers, you should watch this podcast to learn more about CTE.

Note:  Within the podcast a video is mentioned that explains the intent and purpose of CTE, its benefits to students as well as to the general overall economy.  It should be watched by the parents of all junior high and high school students.  The students should also watch it.   Following is a link to that video on YouTube:  https://youtu.be/g0dyV9yzKGc.

There are also several references to “soft skills” which are learned or acquired by students and which are sought after by employers.  Soft skills are usually referred to as “employability skills” such as professionalism, interpersonal or people skills and can include such things as adaptability and flexibility, dependability, creativity, problem solving, leadership, responsibility, self-discipline, teamwork, collaboration, time management, work ethic, and more.  There aren’t any classes that specifically teach these skills, yet are necessary for success in the working world of adults.

Below is a link to get to the Burbank USD/CTE website.  You can find out more about CTE on this website or you can find the contact information of Diana Dysthe or others involved with CTE.
