    Still Fishin'

    Still Fishin'

Hi everyone! As you might have noticed, LWYL hasn't come back this summer. I don't anticipate we'll be back until later this year.

Here's the deal: this is the first time I've actually had an extended stretch of relaxation in...maybe ever? Even though LWYL gives me so much joy, there's a lot of work involved and I'm enjoying having my weekends to just chill out.

That said, I love y'all, and miss you! I'll keep you updated as to LWYL's return.

    Gone Fishin'

    Gone Fishin'

Welp everyone, I’m fixing a sign outside my door for a little bit that says “Gone Fishin’”. It’s time to take a little hiatus from Love What You Love.

I started the podcast two years ago, and it has brought so much joy into my life - and hopefully into yours, too.

ut it does take a lot of time and effort, and while I love it and it’s so meaningful to me, I have to admit: I’m tired.

Because I do everything myself - finding guests, scheduling, interviewing, editing, promotion, the whole shebang - it’s a little bit like a second job. A second job that I have to pay to do.

So for the time being, I’m on a hiatus. In the meantime, you can check out the back catalog of 59 episodes of Love What You Love.

I’m really hoping to be back in the summer after I’ve had a chance to rest and recuperate, and attend to some stuff going on in my life.

Until then, stay well, stay hopeful, and keep on loving what you love.

    See you soon!

Episode 54: Surfing with Zeke Rodrigues Thomas

I hope everyone is having a lovely holiday season! If you’re still looking for a gift (maybe even for yourself), we have some sweet merch at the Love What You Love store - t-shirts, mugs, stickers, the works. Check it out at https://society6.com/lovewhatyoulovepod.

And if you’re looking for a good deed to do during the holidays, don’t forget to check out the show notes for every show, where we always include links to incredible nonprofits! You could also rate, review, and subscribe to Love What You Love - that would be delightful.

You know what else is delightful? Talking with this week’s guest!

Zeke Rodrigues Thomas is a director, producer, actor, writer, editor - in fact, he worked his editing magic on many of the early episodes of Love What You Love! He’s a multitalented, super nice guy.

He’s also absolutely passionate about surfing.

In this episode we talk kook boards; heart rate regulation; dolphins; Sarf Club; sharing the stoke; surfing at Costco; Point Break live; and so much more.

So find out why Zeke loves surfing - and why you might learn to love it, too!

Also, apologies for the wonky sound again this week on my side. There was a wonky setting on my audio interface, so you won't be hearing this issue again. Like last week, I hope you enjoy the conversation so much you don't even notice!

Episode 53: Podcasting with Alie Ward

Episode 53: Podcasting with Alie Ward

I freaking love podcasts. I love them. I subscribe to way too many to keep up with, I’m always on the lookout for new ones, and in January 2020, I got back into podcasting myself after 10 years focusing on historical fiction. Did I mention I love podcasts?

Here’s the cool thing: this week’s guest hosts one of my very favorite podcasts!

Alie Ward is an Emmy Award-winning science communicator. She’s a writer, producer, and correspondent on too many dang shows to list (but I will, in the show notes!)

But her passion project is her comedic science show Ologies, named one of Time Magazine’s top 50 podcasts!

It was so fun to geek out with Alie about podcasting. In this episode, we talk releasing perfectionism; west coast vs east coast podcasts; strategic Chardonnay at an Emmy Awards after party; why failure isn’t to be feared; finding your authentic voice; and so much more.

Alie is a Daytime Emmy Award-winning science correspondent for CBS’s "The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation with Mo Rocca,” and host of “Did I Mention Invention?” on the CW. She acts as a consulting producer on Netflix’s “Ada Twist, Scientist,” produced by Michelle and Barack Obama-helmed Higher Ground. She has also recently consulted on their series “Waffles & Mochi,” as well as shows for HBO Max and Amazon Studios. She also appears on Netflix’s science series “Brainchild” and Science Channel’s "How to Build Everything.”

Episode 50: Wildlife Rescue with Laura Hawkins

Before we get started, I just have to note that this is the 50th Love What You Love interview! Thank you so much for being here!

I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the best around: Zeke Rodrigues Thomas of Mindjam Media was unbelievably helpful in terms of editing and helping me get up to speed, and the delightful Emily White of The Wordary continues to create the best podcast transcripts around. Of course, I’ve also been super honored to chat with the most interesting people, interested in the coolest things.

Speaking of, let’s meet this week’s guest!

Laura Hawkins is the executive director of the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley whose mission is to provide sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife with exceptional free care, rehabilitation, and the opportunity for release. They also educate the public about coexisting peacefully with local wildlife.

It was so cool to talk with Laura! In this chat, we talk ducks that act like dogs; what to do when you find a baby animal; why you shouldn’t trim your trees until late October; saving squirrels in India; why it’s a really stupid idea to keep a wild animal as a pet; fighting for the underdog; and so, so much more.

Episode 48: Planespotting with Kevin Ray

Episode 48: Planespotting with Kevin Ray

If you have a few minutes before October 3, 2021, I'd really appreciate your feedback about Love What You Love, and some insight into your podcast listening habits! The survey is very short, and every submission = a donation to the Humane Society by me! I'd really appreciate your feedback (and so would the critters). https://bit.ly/LWYL2021survey

When he was a little kid, Kevin Ray absolutely loved airports and airplanes - and that passion has never waned. He’s now a professional planespotter, putting his many years of news videography experience to work by sharing the daily activities at Los Angeles’ LAX airport with fellow enthusiasts around the world.

In this chat we talk about the queen of the skies; connecting with people over a shared passion; planespotting after 9/11; why airplanes have special paint jobs; the physical challenges of planespotting; flight crew fanboys; and so much more.

So find out why Kevin loves planespotting - and why you might learn to love it, too.

So, it goes without saying that the pandemic has fundamentally changed our lives - often in horrible ways, sometimes in beautiful ways, and for a few, in transcendent and transformative ways.

Heather Hellyer and her husband were on a long RV trip when the pandemic hit and national parks shut down. Looking for something to do, Heather found a nearby herd of wild horses, and a deep, consuming passion was born.

Heather chatted with me from her RV in Cody, Wyoming and we talk wild horses’ and burros’ importance in the ecosystem; Thoreau; the decimation of herd management areas; why you might want to rethink eating that hamburger; which organizations are doing the best work in saving wild horses and burros; where her heart is most at peace; and so much more.

So find out why Heather loves wild horses - and why you might learn to love them, too.

Episode 45: Baseball Stadiums with Andy Walczak

Episode 45: Baseball Stadiums with Andy Walczak

Did you know that professional baseball has been played in the United States since 1869. 1869! I’m a relative newcomer to baseball, having started really following my local team (the Giants) about 12 years ago.

But today’s guest, Andy Walzack, has been crazy about baseball since he was a kid. First as a tradition with his dad, then as an adult with his friends, he’s traveled all over the U.S. to visit different ballparks - over 40 and counting!

In this episode, we chat about connecting with family and friends; learning more about parts of the country you might not otherwise visit; the worst ballpark ever; how geography influences the game of baseball; the best ballpark food and where to get it; top tips for your first baseball game; and so much more.

So find out why Andy loves baseball stadiums - and why you might learn to love them, too.
