It was a time of political and economic turmoil that saw the German hyperinflation of 1923 and the rise of Nazism with the appointment in 1933 of Adolph Hitler to the German chancellorship. This period also brought about a brutal and sadistic serial killer known as the Vampire of Düsseldorf.
