Future of Work | Dr Shalini Lal

Future of Work | Dr Shalini Lal

Dr. Shalini Lal and I got together for what turned out to be an enriching and fascinating conversation on #futureofwork

Some key points Dr Lal spoke about

    1. Future is already here and has disrupted how we work already. It is much more than just work arrangements (read, WFH)

    2. There is a real danger of 'out of sight, out of mind' in remote working. The need to engage with team members is much more urgent than we think it is

    3. Younger people who are joining the workforce are finding it difficult to build bridges. We must help them do so

    4. Learning and upskilling is a key element of the future of work. Many of us will have multiple careers, unlike our previous generations.

    5. COVID/Pandemic is an accelerator of change. This change would anyways have happened. It is the next big change after work being performed where it was not originated (read, offshoring)

For these and many more insights check the video below. The show is also on YouTube. I will leave a link in the comments section.

Please do also check Dr Lal's fascinating show - The Future of Work. It's featured on her LinkedIn profile and is easy to find.

Qualitist Show - Dr Sunil Gupta, DeBono Master Trainer

Qualitist Show - Dr Sunil Gupta, DeBono Master Trainer

Balaji S Reddie and I spoke with Dr Sunil Gupta as part of our #Qualitist series on behalf of Qimpro Foundation.

Dr Gupta is one of the five global lifetime master trainers on #DeBono methods, trained by the master himself. It does not get bigger than him in the field of creativity and innovation. He started his career in Quality and remains a passionate Qualitist.

Here are some key points from the hour-long highly educative chat.

Quality is not enough. We need Creativity and Innovation to make an impact. These subjects are all interrelated and interdependent.

DeBono's methods help us improve our thinking processes and if used properly they lead to outstanding results

Quality is not enough. Creativity is not enough. Innovation is not enough. We have to keep applying all these methods and continue to make an impact.

Younger people entering the Quality profession, should focus on learning and applying the learning. All this comes in handy later in your career.

Crucial Conversations at Work with Shammi Pant and Anshuman Tiwari

Crucial Conversations at Work with Shammi Pant and Anshuman Tiwari

In this episode, I speak with Shammi Pant to discuss how to identify and tackle Crucial Conversations at Work. Here are some key points from the talk:

    1. Crucial conversations become crucial when opinions vary, stakes are high, and emotions run high

    2. Like all skills, we can improve how we identify and tackle such conversations. Preparation helps

    3. Self-awareness and introspection help us prepare.

    4. We face such conversations often. At work and in personal life. Taking a deep breath. Pausing. Assessing our mindset is critical.

    5. Confrontation may help you win the day but could lose you the war.

Of course, in some rare situations, the culture is toxic and there is malice in the air. Such a situation needs a decision, not a conversation.

Watch the video interview for more tips and tricks to get better at such conversations. Video is on my YouTube channel - Anshuman Tiwari

Life Transformation with Running - Coach Pramod

Life Transformation with Running - Coach Pramod

Pramod Deshpande, chief coach of Jayanagar Jaguars, India's leading Running Academy. Coach has trained over 7000 working professionals to pick endurance running as a hobby.

The event was live on YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook. Unedited video attached. I will share smaller edited videos later this week.

    Some gems from the talk:

    1. Human species has survived and thrived because it was active. And #running comes naturally to us. We are designed that way.

    2. Running is not just about stamina and strength. There are four systems at work - Mental/Brain, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Muscle and bones.

    3. Just as in our careers, progress in running is slow and the steady and diligent are rewarded. Working on strength, stamina, balance, and rhythm is critical to improving performance.

    4. While minor injuries will happen as we build strength, no major long term injury happens because of running. Most are due to improper preparation or over-ambition.

    5. Running in a community or group helps to stay motivated and it's easier to follow a plan. This is especially important also for women runners from a safety point of view.

We also had TCM Sundaram, ace venture capitalist, joining the show to share his journey of becoming a regular runner at marathon events.

Indistractable by Nir Eyal - a quick review

Indistractable by Nir Eyal - a quick review

Here is a review of another amazing book - Indistractable by Nir Eyal.

This book helps you to understand how to become Indistractable which I think is the superpower of the 21st century.

How can we stay away from distractions that keep us away from our goals is probably the power that all of us need. This book also busts the myth that we are distracted by the technology around us.

A quick disclaimer. This is not a book summary. This is just a book recommendation. I have read the book and I'm sharing my recommendation with you.

My suggestion is that you buy the book and read it.

Quick. Think of this. What is the opposite of distraction? No. Focus is not the opposite of distraction. It is traction.

The book is full of tips to hack back your time from the distractions that keep you away from your goals. My top two tips are:

    - Calendarise your to-do list
    - Resist your temptation for just 10 mins.

If you like this summary and we want more content like this, please like share and subscribe. It will mean a lot to me. And I will encourage myself to make more such content.

    Why Personal Branding?

    Why Personal Branding?

I recently spoke at a Toastmaster event on a topic I am close to - Personal Branding. In this 30 min podcast (20 min if you hear at 1.5x) you will get a window into my views on:

    - Why do we need a personal brand? Like it or not, want it or not, you already have a brand. You can only choose to promote and reinforce it

    - The create, enhance, reinforce cycle to build a brand irrespective of where you start.

    - Take care of the Why and the What will follow. And you will then discover your unique 'How'.

Being a Qualitist - Sumant Sood

Being a Qualitist - Sumant Sood

Sumant Sood was our guest on the #Qualitist show yesterday. The show was live on LinkedIn and YouTube. Organised by Qimpro Foundation with the objective of recognising outstanding #quality professionals who have made an impact and paved a new path for the profession.

Sumant is an outstanding role model Quality and Innovation professional and has had a lasting impact at Titan Company Limited as its current head of #innovation.

Balaji S Reddie and I spoke to Sumant on his and Titan's quality and Innovation journey. Here are some gems from the interview. You can also check the video at https://lnkd.in/g8A8TBU

    1. Quality professionals must be bilingual. Talk profit/money/impact to senior management and things to do for the team.

    2. Persistence is a key skill for aspiring Quality professionals. This must be developed and honed. Nothing comes easy in managing change.

    3. Lifelong learning is critical if you want a long life in Quality and Innovation.

    4. A Qualitist is a quality professional who practices quality principles everywhere and all the time (Of course, don't try this at home warning applies here). :)

    5. Quality is driven by leadership. Titan is today a leader because of the persistence and focus of its founders. The Jewellery division did not make profits for the first 6-7 years but the Leadership remained focused on Quality.

The video episode sounds just right on 1.5x speed on YouTube and will need 30 mins of your time. As always, looking forward to your feedback and suggestions.

The term Qualitist was coined by Dr J M Juran and is evangelised by Suresh Lulla through the Qimpro Foundation which recognises professional Qualitists through an application-based peer review mechanism. For more details please check www.Qimpro.com

Wisdom for Startups from Gownups with R Gopalkrishnan and R Narayanan

Wisdom for Startups from Gownups with R Gopalkrishnan and R Narayanan

Giving up control and raining money is the first act of humility from an entrepreneur. Not my words but wisdom coming from grownups - R Gopalakrishnan (Gopal) and Naru Narayanan.

Earlier today I spoke with both these distinguished leaders on Wisdom for Startups by Grownup based on their recent book by the same name. The show was live on my channel.

    Top moments from the session:

    1. Shinise and Corporate Ayurveda: the principles of a long healthy life are universal and it is the same for an organisation. Organisations can last long and should aim to do so.

    2. Minohoda, is Japanese for - it is not enough to have a great idea. You must also have a good understanding of your limitations. Love your idea but evaluate objectively

    3. Raising money vs Using your Money: Raising capital is accompanied by giving up control. The desire for control is human nature and we don’t frown upon it. There was a time when Tata Sons held under 2% of Tata Steel.

    4. The act of raising money is the first act of humility that an entrepreneur can show. The maximum feedback one gets is from the person who puts in the money. Nothing is worse than an entrepreneur who cannot make that transition from being my idea, my company, to our idea, our company.

    5. Companies are like human beings. Companies can be like children and one gets attached to them. There is emotion. The company and the entrepreneur forge a clear personality of their own.

    6. Hiring people you know vs the best talent: When you hire people whom you know, don't forget that those people also know you.

    7. A team means you have talent Density. Portability.

    8. PIAC – Purpose, Identity, Adaptability, Conservative is the secret sauce for success as a startup.

    9. Kahlil Gibran said this in his point, he said, be grateful for parenthood, but remember, you're merely a vehicle through which that being has come into the world.

For this and more check the video on YouTube (Link in comments). I will publish a Podcast version soon as well.

ManageBetter - LinkedIn for Personal Branding

ManageBetter - LinkedIn for Personal Branding

Earlier today I hosted a #managebetter show with #personalbranding experts Sakshi Chandraakar and Sri Ram Kumar C on #LinkedIn for Personal Branding.

This was my highest registered (1500+) show and even though I had a major issue with streaming on LinkedIn many of stayed on and caught the show on #YouTube and #twitter . I am grateful for your sustained interest and support.

So what were the top lessons from the show:

    1. Find your Why? Why are you on LinkedIn? Who is your audience? What is your purpose?

    2. Do not chase numbers. Becoming consistently visible on LinkedIn is an organic process and if your content resonates with your audience they will like and stay.

    3. Reaching our to #recruiters is a two way process. Personal branding is primarily about making your brand strong and visible so recruiters reach out to you.

    4. Create credible content that resonates with your brand. Random posts occasionally do get viral but do not do anything for your brand. This is organic and long term.

    5. Your career success can be explained in a 10-30-60 rule. 10% is your performance. 30% is your brand. And 60% is your visibility

    6. Be Real, Relatable, Respectful, and Responsible. Don't get into wrangling matches. It is a waste of time. Respect all opinion including yours.

    7. Follow role models in your space and learn from them. Copy them. If possible tell them that you copied from them as well.

    8. Don't miss out on basics such as having a professional photograph, crisp clear headline, adequate (but not too much) detail of your roles and achievements, etc.

    9. Connect sensibly not indiscriminately. Your connections and followers count for nothing if they don't connect and resonate with you who you are. Keep your brand in mind all the time. What is your Why?

    10. Keep learning. LinkedIn keeps changing and improving. Stay in touch with the changes. Example. LinkedIn recently changed it's post length from 1300 to 3000 characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show and I hope you will enjoy it as well.

Qualitist - Dr Parag Rindani on Quality in Healthcare

Qualitist - Dr Parag Rindani on Quality in Healthcare

Last week, Balaji S Reddie and Anshuman Tiwari met up with Dr Parag Rindani for the first Qualitist webinar. The term Qualitist was coined by Dr J M Juran and evangelised by Suresh Lulla of Qimpro Consultants Pvt. Ltd.

Dr Rindani is the first Qualitist of the Month, announced in May this year.

The series is dedicated to bringing the story of Qualitists in the public domain and encourage quality professionals to aim higher and work harder to further our profession.

Dr Rindani shared a mix of lessons learnt and anecdotes in a 45 min chat. The entire interview is available on YouTube at - https://youtu.be/LjlB_JBFJ2Y

Here are our top5 moments from the chat

    1. Cost of Poor Quality or COPQ in Healthcare needs a mission mode. If we save money, without impacting quality, we can serve more patients.

    2. Quality errors in Healthcare can be fatal. Loss of life is the biggest prices to pay for an error.

    3. Healthcare can and has learnt a lot from other Industries including the Focus on Quality methods.

    4. Like everything else, in Healthcare also there are at least two Indias. One, the urban one, has almost world-class healthcare. The other, the rural one, needs a lot of attention.

    5. Checklists are often a useful tool in Healthcare Quality. However, the integrity of the people using the checklists is critical and often missing.

Dr Rindani placed his gratitude for the founders of Wockhardt Hospitals Ltd, Dr Lloyd Nazareth, and Suresh Lulla for igniting his passion for Healthcare Quality.

He also cited the good work done by Quality Council of India(QCI), Dr.Girdhar Gyani, and CAHO- Consortium of Accredited Health care Organisation, and Jigisha Lulla of #Qimpro

A Qualitist Future - Suresh Lulla

A Qualitist Future - Suresh Lulla

Last week Balaji S Reddie of the #Deming forum, and I spoke to our guru and mentor Suresh Lulla on my show Manage Better. This was the season finale show and was totally worth it.

Mr Lulla is a legend and the foremost Quality teacher and consultant we have. A disciple of Dr J M #Juran, in this one-hour interaction he shared nuggets never heard before in public. Key points included:

    1. How he started as an Economist, a reluctant one, but always had his head and heart in Quality
    2. After being told he was over-qualified for the job he had applied for at #TCS he joined consulting firms
    3. And then in 1987 #Qimpro happened more as a gift from Dr J M Juran and two well-wishers who dreamt on his behalf
    4. Speaking the language of Business helped Qimpro get it's first client Tata Steel
    5. Always focus on what matters to the Customer - there is nothing more to Quality
    6. This century belongs to #Qualitist.
    7. Understanding what is the problem is the key to Quality. Not the tool
    8. Future of #quality is #green
    9. Keep learning. Keep teaching
    10. Our stakeholders are first Earth and the Society we live in. If we fail them all the other results don't matter.
