    Goal Setting in Midlife

    Goal Setting in Midlife

Who'd have thought you could 'crockpot' without an actual crockpot??
Today, Cam and Amelia use this term to talk about the process of allowing ideas to simmer. Do you ever have a great idea about:

    • changing a habit?
    • getting healthier?
    • changing jobs?

    Then you either:
    A) decide that it's not for you (you are scared, you procrastinate, or decide it's dumb)
    B) fail to act
    C) jump in without thinking twice

'Crockpotting' is the idea of slowing down, of really carefully considering. It's NOT being lazy, procrastinating, nor a failure to act.
Join us as we teach you how to be intentional about next steps.

    How to Track Your Nutrition

    How to Track Your Nutrition

Tracking nutrition may feel like a daunting, laborious task, but it will provide value if you are aiming for particular health goals.
In this episode, Cam and Amelia unpack the what and how of nutritional tracking. You can start small, with just daily protein. Then, if needed, you can expand your tracking to all macro nutrients (fat and carbs). There are several apps that will lend a hand.
It can be an eye-opening experience to track your nutrition. It lets you know what you are really consuming but be honest with yourself. If you don't accurately track, you can't trust the results.

01:59 Tracking diet helps understand what's missing.
04:52 Food diary: start small, track daily protein.
09:24 Displaying information with circles, setting individual goals.
10:12 Tracking with a coach is fantastic and accurate.
13:05 Don't let numbers control your life.
19:00 Collagen and protein powder as supplements in moderation.
22:45 Eating colorful fruits and veggies provides healthy carbs.
24:22 Misconception about nutrient-less carbs, organic corn chips top choice.
26:49 Tracking biofeedback, blood sugar hacks, food order.
29:50 Curiosity in food transforms health and happiness.

    Redefining Thanksgiving Traditions in Midlife

    Redefining Thanksgiving Traditions in Midlife

cToday we're talking about redefining Thanksgiving Traditions in midlife. This may be especially relevant if your tradition will necessarily change due to a change in status. This could be due to divorce, loss of a parent, being newly empty-nested or simply that you want to try something new!

Traditions are great, until they're not. I think sometimes we fail to recognize this.  We expect the 'Norman Rockwell' painting during the Holidays, when in fact, that rarely happens; it's a complete illusion!
We want you to embrace new traditions. Take what you enjoyed from past traditions and let go of the rest. Expectations can be joy-killers.

Cam and Amelia give you a humorous, heart-warming look at what creating new traditions can look like.

02:10 Traditions: Paternal grandparents, husband, separate opinions.
04:45 Large family gathering without alcohol and games.
07:29 Family traditions can change as kids grow.
11:34 Holiday plans with family may change, adapting graciously.
13:51 Thanksgiving with kids: hike, breakfast, brewery, fun.
18:11 My daughter went, relatives can be stressful.
19:58 Father uncomfortable on holidays, no need to entertain.
23:12 Little considerations during the holidays for hosts.

    Coping with Loss in Midlife

    Coping with Loss in Midlife

Most of us in Midlife are no stranger to loss. At some point in our lives, we've experienced the loss of a grandparent or older family member. But what about other losses? The loss of a good friend, the loss of a career, or the loss of our health can all throw us for a loop.
This episode is dedicated to the memory of Cam's sweet friend Debby, who was a co-teacher with Cam for many years.
This episode is both touching and comforting as we explore different types of loss, but also ways of coping. This can be through social networks, supplements, and sticking to our 'minimums' through times of grief and stress.
We hope this episode  comforts you and informs you, and if it resonates, please like and share.

00:02:16 Teaching partner's death triggers immense grief.
00:05:27 Friendship needs common elements to survive.

Gray Area Drinking: The secret indulgence that destroys your mental health

Gray Area Drinking: The secret indulgence that destroys your mental health

Greetings Midlifers! Welcome to this sobering (pun intended) episode of the midlife mommas. Colleen's story may resonate with you...in parts or in it's entirely. We are SO excited to have her on the show!

Colleen's story is not an unusual one. She talks about drinking in the context that it's most familiar, in casual and social settings. Many of us have used alcohol to 'take the edge off'. But when is it too much? How is alcohol affecting your health? Your decision making? Your sleep? Your mental health?

I know you're going to love Colleen as much as we do!

00:02:43 Withdrawal effects, ignorance, and alcohol addiction.
00:04:06 Alcohol's impact on adulthood and menopause.
00:06:53 Hiding alcohol addiction with clever deception.
00:11:05 AA philosophy: brain programmed, belief control, not science; pursue happiness, not sobriety.
00:14:25 Dopamine depletion leads to lightweight alcohol effects.
00:19:32 Delaying start time, controlling wine consumption.
00:22:28 Enjoy wine mindfully, not unconsciously drinking.
00:25:59 Tools for repairing dopamine levels after substance abuse.
00:29:21 Embrace authenticity, be powerful, live authentically.
00:30:38 Admitting not okay, being seen, powerful.
00:34:13 Fixed mindset: "I'm an alcoholic and can't control myself."
Growth mindset: Learn to change thoughts & neuroplasticity.
