    Mixed Emotions by Brian Norwood

DJ Brian Norwood was born during the first seedlings of dance music as we know it today were sprouting. In the 1970s, the Tea Dance at Fire Island's Blue Whale was settling in as ritual and David Mancuso's infamous "The Loft" parties in NYC were just getting started. Being born in the music-rich environment of Nashville would be a harbinger of things to come. And being born in that era would greatly impact his career.

In the 90's, Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, would open its arms to Brian. This move to a more urban environment and being within the twinkle of NYC skyscrapers, is an important transition not only in geography, but of musical awakening. After attending a seminal Saint-At-Large Party with all its intendant revelry, he felt an overwhelming drive to cultivate music and learn to mix. Vinyl was still the preferred medium for DJ's, which gives Brian the unique perspective of being among the younger DJ's still spinning today who teethed on vinyl.

In the 90s Brian began to play live shows. His ability to feel the energy of a room and to zero in on what crowds want to hear quickly gained him major name recognition that spread from Philadelphia to the entire nation. Over the last 25 years the notable gigs he has played are too many to count, but include events in every major American city and as far away as Maui, Hawaii and Amsterdam, Netherlands.

In 2011 he began podcasting for the ability to reach even more listeners. His Mixed Emotions by Brian Norwood podcasts have been streamed hundreds of thousands of times and continue to be a major asset to his musical career. The sets that have been the most recognized of his work are Sophisticated Morning, Sophisticated Deep, and Sophisticated Chill. These sets are just as their name implies: percolating, hazy, gently rising to an alert state. However, to those unfamiliar with his breadth of music, it would be unfair to characterize him as a “chill” only DJ. It is unlikely that you would have heard music and music mixed like this anywhere else. Brian has a style of playing unique, obscure and ethereal songs that is unmistakably his. This is a true artist that isn't stuck in a genre, who can play for long sets and play to the most demanding crowds.

It’s difficult to express with words something as nuanced as music by a sublime DJ. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. He knows how important a crowd is to a DJ and how important a DJ is to a crowd and he chooses cautiously and carefully the live gigs that he plays. His podcasts can be found on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts, PodOmatic and HearThis. Whether you hear him at a live performance or on his podcast you’re in for a rare and unique musical trip.

I got back from Hawaii three weeks ago...and I swear I'm still glowing from the experience.  The glow is so strong that I thought I'd share some of it with you.  I played many of these songs at Epic Maui Journey...so if you were there you'll recognize most of them. I can't wait for you to hear them again.  If you weren't, well, I can't wait for you to hear them the first time!  These are masterpieces;  a collection of songs that are drenched in warm sunshine and loving vibes.  I've got major superstars (Nora En Pure, Kygo, GoldFish, Armin van Buuren) on the set and I've got lesser known producers (Jerro, Ocula, Le Youth, CRi, etc).  If you follow the deep and chill house genres even those "less known" artist/producers are at the top of their game.  I start the set in a deep and chill vibe and slowly work the energy to the point that by the time the set is coming towards a conclusion you've arrived in near full-on EDM anthems.  I tried to segue from one genre to another so carefully that the changes in energy would be subtle and near-undetectable.  Although you'll end up in a different "place" at the end than the beginning I will say that the constant is a feeling of warmth and happiness.  As always...this set originated in my heart.  I hope you FEEL it just the same as I do.  From my heart...to your ears.

Have you ever heard me liken my mixes to musical arcs? Typically I mold my sets as though they form an imaginary musical arc, with a distinct beginning, peak and landing. With this mix, unintentionally, my arc is more like a straight line across (that's drenched in warm, deep, melodic and heart-soaring vibes). The feel at the end of this set is very much the same as the beginning. I always like to say that I'm not the only one involved in creating my mixes. The unseen Spirit that guides me has a hand in all this too and, well, the straight line across is what the Spirit had in mind today. This one is deep, heartfelt and sturdy! ;-)

As for the music. *Every* *Single* *Song* is an anthem in its own right. Of course these aren't peak of night hands in the air anthems. These are heart-tugging anthems that wrap their arms around you and drench you in warmth and melancholy blissful vibes. I always go out of my way my way to source remarkable remakes of songs from years' ago...and wow, did I find a couple of good ones for you for this set. I start the set off with Blonde Maze's remake of the 1982 international smash hit "I Melt With You" by Modern English. Later in the set I bring in York's remake of Human League's "Human" from 1986. Surrounding these two masterpieces are the most gorgeous and emotionally rich deep house records you could possibly imagine. I rarely want to mention my personal favorites on a set so as to not influence what you think of the mix overall. Well...let me just say that you should pay *really close attention* to #5 (Kairos Grove "I Don't Mind), #6 (Tailor "Never Enough"), #7 (Le Youth "I Will Leave A Light On"), #8 (Vanessa Arnolds "Colors Turn To Grey"), #9 (Martin Garrix "Real Love"), #10 (Anamē "Peaceful Avenue"), #12 (Julia Church "No Ending") and #14 (Chicane "One Thousand Suns"). Hint hint. Wink Wink. But seriously...please pay really close attention to *all* the songs on this set. Like I said above...every song here is emotionally powerful.

As always, my sets are conceived and composed with every ounce of love that I've got to give. I firmly believe that each of us is placed here on earth to give a particular gift to our world around us that needs it so badly. *This* is my gift to you. From my heart...to your ears. ENJOY!

Episode 97: Fire Island House Music 9

Episode 97: Fire Island House Music 9

I've been planning this mix for months now and so excited about it...so it brings me huge joy to finally get it to you.

I'll tell you about the influences that helped me create it and then I'll tell you about why I envision it as "Fire Island" house music.  First, the influences.  I was lucky enough to live in Philly during the glory days of clubbing (the 90s). Because of my close proximity to NYC I was going to clubs on a near-weekly basis listening to internationally famous DJs such as Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, DJ BUC (RIP), Hex Hector, Louie Vega, Danny Tenaglia and Morabito to name a few.  I was going to clubs such as Sound Factory, Roxy, Limelight and Sound Factory Bar(and of course the Pavilion on Fire Island).  Those DJs were the most influential to me -- and largely molded me and my style of DJing from the very beginning.  So that's a quick bit about where my influences come from.

About why I envision this music as "Fire Island" house music:  It was almost always a guarantee that me and my friends would stay in the clubs and parties until the very last note rang out -- usually in the wee hours of the morning.  During the Autumn, Winter and Spring the above-mentioned clubs were the places to be.  As the nights turned into mornings the sound would transition to a spin-chilling sound that was laden with pianos, horns and sweeping melodies.  Morning music was a thing and it had a most definite sound.  It was jazz, funk, disco and urban influenced.  During the summertime the center of gravity in New York moves out to the most magical paradise of the Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove.  That same clubbing blueprint is enacted at the Pavilion in the Pines.  I have been fortunate to spend more nights than I can count experiencing that glory.  But it isn't just about clubbing on Fire Island.  House culture is a huge thing on the island.  One can walk the boardwalks at 3PM or 3AM and it is guaranteed that there will be music wafting through the air.  And it's not just any music.  It's *THIS* music.  Because this music is melodic and rooted in "real" music...it is also versatile and perfectly aligns itself with not only early morning clubbing but also lazy days by the pool and on the beach.

About this particular mix:  I hope you love hearing it as much as I loved creating it.  It's something of a tale of two sounds (that perfectly belong together).  The first half of the mix is made up of stunning piano house pieces. I then transition into a more vocal-centric sound the second half of the mix that is influenced by that jazz, disco and funk that I speak about above.  Every note you hear...started in my heart.  As I always say...from my HEART...to your EARS.  Love.

    Episode 95: Sophisticated Deep 17

    Episode 95: Sophisticated Deep 17

As you know I have three DJ mix series that I produce:  Sophisticated Deep, Morning and Chill.  All three of the series are authentic labors of love of mine;  artistic works that genuinely come from deep within.

As I sit and ponder I sometimes think that the Deep sets differ so strikingly from the Chill and Morning sets.  But upon deeper thought...no, they actually don't.  From the very beginning of my spinning career I was known for having a "morning" sound.  Back in the old days...it was actually called "morning music".  But times have changed (and so have I) and it's not called that anymore.  However, the SPIRIT of it all is still the same.  In the old days when I played live I often played trance and progressive house before ending up in "morning music" in the late night hours.  If you analyze my music today...you will hear that my Morning and Chill sets are musical descendants of the old morning music and that my Deep sets are musical descendants of the trance and progressive house sound I used to play.  At the end of the day...all these sounds that I play are still rooted (mostly) in the late-night and morning hours.

So...I have changed a lot...but not at all, all at once.  That's some stuff to ponder.

Let's talk about this, my newest Deep mix.  Wow.  I couldn't be happier with this.  As you know I like my mix sets to be little journeys.  This journey generally consists of three distinct sections.  I start the set off by gently sending you off into soothing organic and melodic house.  About five songs in I subtly transition into a deep and sexy sound that has masculine and sturdy tribal undertones.  Lots of percussion, horns and sexy rolling rhythms.  And finally, before you know it, I crescendo into a sound of melodic and anthemic progressive house.  All three segments of the mix very subtly belong together.  I hope you love taking this mini journey as much as I loved making it.  From my heart...to your ears....ENJOY.

    Episode 94: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #1

    Episode 94: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #1

Welcome to the start of one of the happiest days I have each and every year.  The beginnings of my live gigs are always a big source of pride and joy for me.  You've heard me mention numerous times before my belief that musical performances should form an unseen arc with a clear beginning that invites the listener in -- comforting and intriguing them all at once.  I conceive all my musical performances with clearly defined "sections" all the while carefully blurring the transitions from genre to genre so carefully that the shifts in energy are subtle and happen subconsciously.

All that being said...here is the beginning of one of the most special days I'll ever be part of.  Once you listen to this I hope you'll be amazed that some of these songs would have any part of a "dance" party.  I go out of my way to welcome my attendees with chill and loving vibes.  The songs that start this mix aren't necessarily ones you would dance to but they ARE songs that will stir your soul, shake your hips and wrap you in warmth and happiness.

I open the day with George Ezra "Shotgun"; a quirky indie guitar piece of music that just brings a smile to the face.  A perfect song to open the day.  From there I segued into Craig Strickland "Starlit Afternoon".  Whoa.  This song gives me chill bumps.  Every. Single. Time.  What a perfect song for the day.  If there was every such a thing as a starlit afternoon...this is it.  From there I go into Zac Abel "Be Kind".  LISTEN TO THE WORDS OF THIS SONG!!! Very important message going on here.  Please, seriously, listen to the words.  We need more of this in our world right now.  Zac Abel is our ally and we need as much of him as we can get.  I then mix into Keith Urban "Street Called Main".  Who says I can't play "country" music in my sets (I am from Nashville after all!).  We'll call it country-pop -- and I love it.  This is where I try to carve out a true and genuine style and think outside the box a bit.  From there I want you to zero in on track #9 "Home" by Vicetone.  This song's message is powerful.  The energy is rising and serious and heartfelt all at once.  I always look for messages in my songs and I always want to share them with you.  My gifts to you are sometimes subtle.  Listen.  It's at this point that I begin to bring the energy up ever so subtly.  My standouts from here on are the astounding Nina Simone remake of "Birds Flying High" by Möwe, "Cold Heart" by Elton John and the breathtaking Purple Disco Machine remix of "Hold Me Closer" by Elton John and Brittany Spears to close out the set.

As always every sound and word you'll hear here (ha!)originated from my heart.  I made an oath with myself many years ago that that would be the case.  And it is my joy and pleasure to share this with you.  I hope you'll feel it, love it, share it.

    From my heart...to your ears...ENJOY.

    Episode 93: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #2

Welcome to the segment of Epic Maui Journey where I was beginning to ramp the energy up into spine-tingling, foot-stomping anthems. I started this set off with Paloma Faith's most brilliant remake of "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" by Cass Elliot. From there I weaved through anthemic house and disco house masterpieces. My surprises during this set are of course the "Make Your Own Kind Of Music" but also include the remake of Michael Jackson's classic "Earth Song" by Revival & The GeO Gospel Choir (which was undeniably one of the biggest house music anthems of the last year). Also included is a breathtaking remix of Betty Wright's "Open The Door To Your Heart". by Kevin McKay and Barry Harris' brilliant remix of The Jacksons' "Can You Feel It". Surrounding those centerpieces I also included anthems by my favorite producers KC Lights and Purple Disco Machine. Everything all put together produced over an hour of music that pushed us into full on euphoric hysteria. Perfection under the bright and sunny skies. ;-)

    Episode 92: Sophisticated Morning 89

    Episode 92: Sophisticated Morning 89

Several years ago I nearly renamed my Sophisticated Morning mix series to Little Journeys.  I ended up not doing it because many of you talked me out of it.  But if I had....it WOULD have been fitting.  I have always looked at my mixes as, well, Little Journeys.  The newest Sophisticated Morning is just that;  a little journey.

The first three songs belong loosely to an indie genre. I start the set off with one of my favorite vocalists, Emmit Fenn, whose voice drips with melancholy beauty before mixing into Kygo feat. James Gillespie "Gone Are The Days".  We all have those artists/producers/remixers that can do no wrong to us EVER, right?  Kygo is that one to me.  Everything he touches is...gold.  From there I finish that mini-set off with "Surefire" by Wilderado, a true indie band.  His voice aches with beauty.  I found these songs to be the best "soft launch" to stir interest and lead the listener off into musical bliss...

From there I weave through a set of touching deep house heart-tuggers featuring the best of today's chill/deep house producers including Shallou, Tailor, Sultan + Shepard, A R I Z O N A and Le Youth.  During this middle set pay particular attention to Chris Howard "Lighthouse" (Track 6), Sultan + Shepard "Zima" (Track 7), A R I Z O N A "Moving On" (Track 9), Tailor "Holding Ground" (Track 10).  It's sometimes hard for me to classify favorite records. I love everything I play.  However, with those records mentioned above...they really all do belong in a class of their own.  The emotion they convey is next-level "heart music".

Rounding out the mix out I move into a more energetic sound that I will classify as "deep-heart anthems".  These are records that straddle the line between deep house, progressive house and trance.  I was going to mention my standouts for this set...but as I looked over the tracks I realized that every single one of these songs sends my soul soaring and are records that I would categorize as "next-level" in their beauty and production.  These are energy records that grab you...and SEND YOU FLYING.

Closing out in this manner really showcases my "little journeys" thought process.  As you listen and if you closely pay attention you'll notice that the ending records are nothing like the beginning ones!  And yet they mesh so beautifully and all seem as though they were made just for each other.

As always I mixed this set with every ounce of love that I've got to give.  I'm a firm believer that each of us is placed on earth with a purpose and I believe that mine is to bring joy and beauty to a world that I think needs it through music.  My hope is that you'll receive my gift and use it to fuel your days (and nights).  Take it, use it, share it.

    From my heart...to your  ears...

    Episode 91: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #3

This part of Epic Maui Journey 2023 was filled with melodic, uplifting and heart-tugging anthems. All of the songs during this stretch have vocals and vibes that were designed to send our souls flying. I can't wait for you to either relive the day (if you were there)...or hear the joy that we experienced (if you weren't).

    From my heart...to your ears.....

    Episode 90: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #4

    Episode 90: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #4

I always approach the music for my gigs thinking of the event as though it were riding a musical arc. That being said...one could say that this segment is the "peak" of the day. I hesitate to say that though because during each segment of this day there was music that would send one's soul soaring high -- just in a different way. But it is true that this part of the day was the fastest (clocking in at around 124-125 bpm) and had the most progressive and trance-y sound.

During this set I started slightly deep with it taking a couple of songs for me to ramp up into those feel-good anthems that I know we all live for. By the third song (Anabel Englund "Waiting For You") I start gently bringing the spin-chilling vibes into play before segueing into York "On The Beach" (which I feel is almost mandatory for a party such as this). Around the sixth song I arrive into full-on gorgeous trance anthems. Pay particular to that sixth song (Ashley Wallbridge "5000 Miles"). This song is what I consider my own old school sound was like. It's a new song (produced by Gareth Emery), but it has that sweet 90s high NRG anthem sound to it. From there on out it's nothing but emotionally-charged vocal anthems that pull at every heartstring. Also pay attention to #15 Leo Stannard "Stargazing". What a breathtaking anthem it is. It's almost as though it written just for that day.

One thing I'm particularly proud of regarding my "peak" to the day...is how gentle and loving it all was. This is daytime energy which is so different than nighttime energy...and I think it's important to differentiate. I hope that these loving and uplifting vibes carry you through many of your days. Every sound you hear was specially chosen to wrap you in love and send your soul soaring through melodies and words alike. From my heart...to your ears. ENJOY.

    Episode 89: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #5

    Episode 89: Epic Maui Journey 2023 #5

This segment of the day is always one of my very favorite parts of the Epic Maui Journey day. It's the Golden Hour when the beach is awash in that mystical golden light that is nearly impossible to describe.  Because the natural beauty that surrounds us is so mighty and powerful....I believe that this is the hour that it's most important to nail the music selection.  This is the hour where our emotions can be catapulted into rare territory if the soundtrack is perfectly tailored to meet the moment.  Based on what I watched transpire I think I hit that nail on the head.

I started the set off with Seal "Killer".  I've always been such a big fan of his.  This remix by by Pete Tong & the Heritage Orchestra is rich, warm and familiar.  Perfect.  From there I work my way into "Gratitude" by Above & Beyond feating Marty Longstaff which has turned into one of the biggest deep house anthems of recent.  It could be said that GRATITUDE was one of the themes of our Epic Maui Journey weekend.  Knowing that people have a special love and appreciation for things that they know...this year I decided to do something a little different as we worked our way towards sunset.  Usually I zero in on playing music that I know will send people into emotional overdrive through the beauty of the music and I don't particularly worry about people knowing my songs.  I allow the beauty of the songs to do the heavy lifting to transport my crowds (instead of song familiarity).  However, this year the Spirit told me to take a trip down memory lane -- and so I did.  As the Sun was beginning to put on a majestic show as it worked it's way to the horizon of the Pacific I slipped into some familiar favorites including "Sweet Child 'O Mine",  "Life In A Northern Town", "It's My Life" , "Love Is In The Air" and "Don't You Worry Child".  One particularly powerful moment was when "Life In A Northern Town" came on.  As soon as everyone realized what it was....a swarm of arms went high to the heavens....and the entire beach was united in love, singing at tops of lungs.  Blissful hysteria ensued.  I'll never forget the moment.

The song that played as the sun slowly descended below horizon was Shallou and Sultan & Shepard "Raye".  I very nearly cried (and I AM crying right now as I type this) as I looked around and watched the crowed linked arm in arm swaying to the music and clapping & cheering as we witnessed the breathtaking sun set.  I couldn't have been a happier man as I watched this happen. And I couldn't be happier to share the soundtrack with you.  PS:  LISTEN TO THIS VERSION OF THE SONG.  It is...EPIC.

As always, this mix came from my heat and soul.  I hope you enjoy hearing it as much as I did making it.
    From my heart...to your ears....

    Episode 88: Sophisticated Morning 88

Pulling this podcast together was both incredibly easy -- and hard, all at once. Easy...because of how much breathtaking music I had to choose from. And hard...because of, well, how much breathtaking music I had to choose from! You see the predicament. ;-)

If you're a follower of mine on one of the various streaming sites then you you've probably seen that it's been a good spell since I've been able to mix for you. Life has just had so much else on my plate. The good thing though is that through the "quiet spell" I never stop sourcing the music. I go through life with my eyes, ears and heart wide open. The gathering of music never ends. The benefit is that when I do finally find the time to mix...I am overwhelmed with gorgeous music (and emotions!). And now it brings me unspeakable joy to share it with you.

This is a very special collection of music. The skeleton list that I compiled to choose the final tracks from was over 70 songs long. Because I limit all of my mix sets below 80 minutes it means you'll hear 14 of the best of the best of what I've found. I guess that's the "bad" news. The good news is that I've got no shortage of tracks for upcoming mixes. ;-)

This edition features records by worldwide superstars Above & Beyond, Kygo, Sultan + Shepard, Shallou, Forester, Tinlicker, Eli & Fur, KC Lights, Claptone and more. I'd say it really IS a collection of the best of the best in chill and deep house. As always this podcast was mixed with every ounce of love that I've got to give.

    From my heart...to your ears...

    Episode 41: Sophisticated Chill 12

    Episode 41: Sophisticated Chill 12

I'm always unsure of how my Chill sets will be received because it's pretty rare to hear this genre of music mixed into a DJ set.  I wouldn't say the music is rare, per se.  I'd just say that it being mixed as a DJ set is.  But I was always attracted to the melodic and emotional side of music and I have always insisted on having my heart lead the way on my musical endeavors -- so here we are. From the very beginning I tried to stay true to myself and not allow a desire to please the masses cause me or my sound to change. If you've been listening to me for years then you know that my sound is two things at once:  nothing like was in the early years and exactly the same as it ever was. Seems crazy, but it's true.  I wear this as  badge of honor.

If you're a new follower of mine...I ask you to keep an open mind.  You've probably not heard any of this music presented in a DJ mixed format.  For me...it's both super easy and astonishingly hard to do sets like this.  Because this music pushes my buttons in all the right ways...it's super easy to conceive because my heart is the driver.  But technically it's almost impossible to mix music like this together.  So I have to be crazy clever and creative in how I do my blends.  Please do forgive me if a mix or two is less than perfect.  Essentially none of these songs were formatted to be mixed in the way I that I do it.

About this music:  This is the very same music that I present on my Sophisticated Morning sets, just chugging along at a considerably slower pace (102 to 107 bpm).  I've intentionally designed this series to be versatile enough to be anything from "typical everyday background music" to "dancing your way into the late night/early morning hours" music. OK enough of my ramblings.  On to the music.  As always...I've mixed this set with every ounce of love that I've got to give.  From my heart...to your ears.

    Episode 40: Sophisticated Morning 87

Heart. That's the word that comes to mind when I think about my newest musical journey. I guess when I think about it I can say that I'm blessed to have always been very in touch with my heart and not afraid to share it with others. And that's where you come in. This is a collaboration -- and I'm happy it's between you and me.

As far as this production goes...one would say it's a tale of two mixes. The first part is a breezy chill-house affair anchored by gentle vocals that pull at the heartstrings. These are records that I've specifically picked for not only the sound they convey but also the words that they contain. Listen closely. There's messages to be had here. From there I move the mix into sturdy and powerful deep-heart anthems. The sounds may transition from pop oriented chill house to a deeper and more serious sound -- but the heart and emotion stays intact. I've always been intrigued with finding records that are deep, anthemic and emotional all at once -- and I'm particularly excited for you to hear these new ones.

As always...this set is a gift from my heart to yours. Listen, love & share; It's what makes the world go 'round.

    Episode 39: Sophisticated Morning 86

Hello my fellow music-lover.  Good to be back with you again after a too-long absence.  Life has had too much on my plate and I've not had lots of extra time to create a set...until now.  Just in time, right?  Spring is in the air.  The sun is out.  The air is warm.  The birds are chirping.  And here's new music to match the season.

I'm always excited about releasing a new music project.  But I'm particularly excited about this set.  Maybe it's because it's been a few months since I've created a set.  I do have a good story to accompany the mix.  I was actually going to release this a week ago -- but I was having reservations about a couple of the songs on the mix.  First, I wasn't really *feeling* the opening song and I'm a huge believer that the opening song is possibly the most important song of the mix (if there is one?) as it sets the stage for what's to come.  Just as I know from the first note if I like a song or not...I believe that YOU should know from the first note of my set whether you are going to like the journey (or not).  There was also another song or two later in the mix that didn't quite gel with the rest of them. So....I held off and didn't push the mix out.  Fast forward to yesterday morning and I was on a call with my friend Michael Rackley and...as we always do...we started talking about music.  We're DJs.  What else are we supposed to talk about? ;-)  He asked me if I had heard the new Galantis acoustic mix of Becky Hill's "Run".  I hadn't!  He the asked if I had heard Gryffin's new collaboration with OneRepublic "You Were Loved".  I hadn't heard that either.  Well, there you go.  There's your first two songs on the set.  Thank you Michael for solving the problem of what to open my set with.  It's a big and powerful heart-tugging acoustic anthem and I hope that you love it as much as I (WE) do.  From there I weave my way through my signature deep house soothers that segue into uplifting vocal anthems that again segue into driving spine-chilling instrumental masterpieces.  They segues are subtle;  you will hardly notice as I push the energy and intensity higher.  If you're a Flagger...your Flags are going to end up in whipped excitement.  If you're a Dancer....your hands will reach for the sky.  Eyes closed.  Hands high.

As always this music project is an act of LOVE.  Every note, tone and word you hear is rooted in Love.  From my heart...to your ears...ENJOY.

PS:  One of you turned me on to the third song "Starlit Afternoon" by Craig Strickland and I can't remember which one of you did.  THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for doing so.  I'm in love with it and it's on constant rotation with me.  AMAZING.

Of all the music that I mix and present it's the heartfelt deep house music that I love the most.  And it's been more than three months since I released a Sophisticated Morning set -- so I'm crazy excited to bring this new edition to you.  This mix has music by the best and most current chill and deep house artists, producers and remixers including Forester, Shallou, GoldFish, Matoma, Zak Abel, Robin Schulz, Alle Farben, KC Lights and even Bono & The Edge of U2 fame.  I start the mix in my signature emotionally warm and rich sound and slowly ramp the mix up into euphoric deep house anthems that will have you dancing, flagging, tapping, shimmying, wiggling and smiling ear to ear.  And with that...let's get on to the music.  Every song on this set was mixed with love and originated from my heart -- so settle in and prepare for a euphoric heart trip!  As I always say...from my HEART...to your EARS.

Episode 37: Epic Maui Journey 8 (The Golden Hour)

Episode 37: Epic Maui Journey 8 (The Golden Hour)

Let me tell you an awesome story.  I played Epic Maui Journey on the beach every year for 7 years (until 2021 of course) and we were hoping for its return in 2022.  Unfortunately because of restrictions on Maui that were lifted too late to give most people time to plan we weren't able to pull together an official party again.  But 2020 and 2021 being what they had been (especially to me personally) I decided to go ahead and go to Maui this year -- official party or not.  I assumed it would be a very small gathering of maybe 10 of us.  It mattered not.  I wanted to be on Maui with Billy and the few friends I knew were going.  Imagine my surprise when I got there and realized that several dozen of our closest friends had made the journey to experience the magic.  We were smart enough to have a large enough of a sound system that we were able to permeate the beach with outstanding sound -- something we knew was a must even if there had been only 5 of us on the beach.  Amazingly enough...even though there was no party per se...well, one happened anyway.  There must have been between 50-75 of us on the beach that day and the same magic happened as it always does.  The music was loud, the love was abundant and the magic was real.  One very special thing that got to happen this year was that I was not held captive behind the DJ booth performing live.  There was no live set from me; only pre-recorded music that then allowed me to play and frolic with my friends and allowed me to see this party through their eyes and experience it just as they always have.  Wow.  Let me tell you what a rare and magical experience it is.  I always knew it was.  But to experience it from "the other side" of the DJ booth was very special for me (and something I'm actually considering for next year).  More on that later.  Originally Billy and I had decided that this year would not be called EMJ8 because it wasn't *official*.  But upon it happening the way it did we have decided that we would in fact called this year #8 and next year #9.  But because of the outpouring of love and support from so many people the party really did happen - if only a little different this year. So....prepare for number NINE next year.  ;-)

Now...about this music:  Sunsets are serious business.  They are big, powerful and mysterious.  Knowing that I decided to pre-record one set for the hour of the day that is most special to me (and surely everyone else there) and call it The Golden Hour.  These are the hours where late afternoon is awash in a golden hue that is almost indescribable.  So it was important to me to put together a big, powerful and mysterious soundtrack to match the big, powerful and mysterious show that the Sun was giving us.  And now that recording is my gift to you.  It's important to keep the scenery in mind as you listen to this set.  I specifically chose these songs for how they would affect us in that very moment.  These are songs that were chosen to pull at our heartstrings as the giant golden globe was casting it's mysterious glow upon us as it slipped below the horizon of the Pacific.  And as it slipped below the horizon we all burst into thunderous applause -- and all was right with the world -- if just for that very moment.  From my heart -- to your ears.

    Episode 35: New Year's Eve (Detroit) #2

Here is New Year's Eve in Detroit -- Part 2. I should note that the four parts that I'm going to upload don't flow together seamlessly. They all have quite distinctive feels that are quite different from the others. Since these are samplers of what the night would have sounded like live I wanted to neatly orchestrate these podcasts so that they would showcase various points in the night. In this sampler I showcase melodic tech and progressive house with wicked percussion riding along rolling baselines, shiny horns and infectious grooves. The mix eventually gives way to vaguely familiar rhythms and melodies -- all while still keeping the sound firmly rooted in *today*. I would say that this is a set that has an amazing energetic foundation while still keeping an uplifting overall feel. As always...every sound, rhythm and vibe originated in my heart! From MY heart -- to YOUR ears!
