Jen Shultz discusses how to Quit your 9-5, Stand on your own two feet and Find your purpose as a Non-Nine-to-Fiver™

Jen Shultz discusses how to Quit your 9-5, Stand on your own two feet and Find your purpose as a Non-Nine-to-Fiver™

Join me and my guest Jen Shultz, Founder of The Non-Nine-to-Five as we talk about her personal story on how she transitioned from working nine-to-five to shifting her mindset and doing what she knew she was made for. When Jen left her job as a teacher, she knew she wasn’t meant to work in another school. In this episode, Jen shares why intuition is important and what she believes hold people back from truly going for what they love. Make sure to tune in with us because there is a ton to take away.

In this episode you will learn:

    ·       Being a teacher in New York, the anxieties, the misalignments, and the realization.

    ·       Practice makes progress – not perfection.

    ·       The biggest obstacles in life are our own limiting beliefs.

    ·       The 6-Step Process to leaving the Nine-to-Five way: A non-chronological order guide

    ·       Your intuition is totally connected to your positive energy.

    Jen Shultz’ Bio:

In 2010 I was a first grade teacher at a highly acclaimed and rapidly growing charter school in NYC, I had health benefits, I was living in an exciting neighborhood in Manhattan BUT I was completely miserable. I found myself massively depressed, anxiety ridden, and felt like a big loser who was purposeless and confused.

In December of that year however, I reached a point where the pain of staying at my job far exceeded the fear of leaving. I walked in one morning and gave my 2-week notice. When I share this story many people say to me, “Wow that was brave.  That was courageous.”  But bravery was so far from the truth of what I REALLY felt underneath it all.

I felt like a failure who had just let everyone down, especially my students and the staff who needed me. However, way down deep within my heart I knew I needed to leave and begin to carve my own path. After I quit I knew I was destined to never work for an employer again BUT where was I meant to go and who was I meant to be?

My intuition told me to continue teaching but how would I do that if I wasn’t working directly for a school?  It made no sense. I found myself sitting in a local Starbucks day in and day out, emailing and calling as many people as I could letting them know I was providing educational services outside of the typical classroom setting. Within 3 months of leaving my full time job, my first business Teacher on the Go was born.

Since 2013 I have dedicated myself to educating an coaching Non-Nine-to-Fivers who KNOW just like I did that they are meant to be independently employed doing purposeful work in the world, generating money on their own terms using their innate talents and strengths.

Mike Rypka, founder of Torchy's Tacos on the challenges of growing a regional restaurant chain

Mike Rypka, founder of Torchy's Tacos on the challenges of growing a regional restaurant chain

From fry cook of a fast-food chicken joint to king of a Texas taco empire, Mike Rypka started Torchy’s Tacos, in 2006 from a single food truck. The restaurants, now in 75 locations in five states, have a colorful and super fun atmosphere. Mike is a down to earth, honest and transparent guy he's rarely seen dressed in anything other than shorts, sneakers, and perhaps a fedora because he's not a formal guy and he's not afraid to get his hands dirty. From what we can tell, he's passionate about two things...cars, and damn good tacos.

We recorded this episode live at a Torchy's location in the Mueller development in East Austin so the sound is a bit challenging, but the content is awesome. Mike talks to us about the struggles and challenges of starting and growing a regional restaurant chain while growing a loyal following of brand enthusiasts and empowering his employees to deliver on the promise of the best damn tacos one can find.

Liz Deering + Ben Gibson, Co Founders discuss partnerships and entrepreneurship at it's best and worst

Liz Deering + Ben Gibson, Co Founders discuss partnerships and entrepreneurship at it's best and worst

The Un.Inc is a wholehearted & visionary company, born from pain.

"There has been a lot of love, loss, risk and chaos in the journey of the business. I wanted to make a space to serve misfits and dreamers."

The Un.Inc is headquartered in Austin, TX and was founded in 2016 by Liz Deering and Ben Gibson. Since opening their doors they’ve served hundreds of change makers from diverse backgrounds, across the business, arts and social sectors. They’ve built a network of highly engaged mentors in Austin and around the country that’s growing daily.

Ben and Liz deliver programming virtually through coworking spaces around the world, but their roots come from running our own spaces. In 2013 Ben opened Youvolution, a filmmaker space that was on the east side of Austin. In 2016 Ben & Liz came together and opened their first cohort on 35th Street, in Hyde Park. And from 2013-2019 they built and experimented with Novo, our 9 acre live + work tiny home community in Del Valle. In 2019 they managed Soma Vida Coworking, a wellness and creative co-working space that was in its 11th year of business. In 2020 they went online with their founder programming to reach more creators, and now find themselves “in” spaces all around the country each day.

    LIZ DEERING: CEO | Co-Founder | Dreamcatcher

She's passionate about creating safe spaces for people to find their voice, connect with their purpose and pursue their dreams. The Un.Inc is the space and community she wished for when she began her journey as an entrepreneur. She believes we all need that, especially at the very beginning of a dream or idea. It takes so much courage to step out, break the norm, create your own vision. So often we are surrounded by people who love us but don't understand the path we're on, and can't provide that type of support.

Liz believes our culture needs to fundamentally shift to empower change makers from diverse backgrounds, all genders, ages, races and sexual orientations. Because you are the hope, the ones with the solutions that will impact the world.

BEN GIBSON :Chief Education Officer | Co-Founder | Dreamweaver

Ben imagines a world where the earliest stage dreamers are championed, the ones who boldly speak the truth and want to change the world. Where society and systems don't oppress creativity and the freedom to pursue our wildest dreams. Where it's affordable to maintain a life while pursuing your passion and honing your craft. Where a dreamer can walk into a space or community and feel inspired by others just like them and get all the help and assistance they need to get started.

Ben has committed his life to being an example to all the dreamers out there who long for a different life. To show everyone that it can be different. That humanity can live a life purposefully, passionately and still make great money. And that it's possible that our generations change the trajectory of the world's future through impact businesses.

In this episode we discuss the dreams and the realities of reaching for them.

Together with his business partner Emily Soccorsy, Root + River has become the rebel child of the branding world, helping Fortune 500 leaders, defiantly driven marketers, small business owners and everyone in between, practice a new modern way of branding. His creativity manifests in many forms, including writing and sharing his signature #musings, mentoring, songwriting, blogging on Medium and LinkedIn and any other medium that allows him to share his heart unapologetically and freely with the world.

Melinda Garvey: Founder of Austin Woman Magazine, One The Dot Diversity, and On The Dot Podcast

Melinda Garvey: Founder of Austin Woman Magazine, One The Dot Diversity, and On The Dot Podcast

If you ask Melinda Garvey what her big dream is, you will probably hear her say: “I want to brainwash women!” Now, don’t be alarmed. She just sees this as the fastest way to ensure that ALL women know their worth, have a tribe of other women supporting them and can see their own path to success through access to the millions of women that came before them.

“It’s really all about creating a mindset of abundance, rather than scarcity,” Melinda explains. “There are millions of non-celeb, non-corporate titan women who are successful. We just simply don’t ever hear their stories, so we believe that the landscape is barren. On The Dot is on a mission to change that by giving access to successful women and their stories every day.”

It all started in a little Texas town called Austin. One day in 2002, Melinda decided (after one too many glasses of wine) to use her media background to empower, engage and inspire the women of Austin by launching Austin Woman Magazine. Now in its 18th year and hailed as the go-to resource for women looking to move ahead and build a legacy, Austin Woman is going strong…

But what about women around the globe? “When I heard that one of the very top reasons women were not achieving equal success was the lack of access to relatable role models,” Melinda continues, “I just got mad.”

And so, On The Dot was born, starting with little more than a deep passion for championing women, an expertise in storytelling and the moxie to believe that On The Dot could change the conversation about women’s advancement. What if, every morning, millions of women around the world heard a story about a successful, relatable role model? How would our mindset change if we could SEE it and then know that we, too could BE it? What if we took that concept and turned it into a tool for enterprise level corporations to manage & report on their diversity and inclusion initiatives?...well that's what she did.

When not on her soapbox, you can find Melinda and her Kiwi husband and business partner, Kip, at a soccer game or swim meet cheering on their 11 year old feminist son, Beckom. Other than that—you guessed it—you can find her surrounded by a gaggle of women drinking wine, of course!

Oh, and in case you’re still reading, Melinda has also won a few awards for being such a badass:

    Awards

    • 2006: one of nine women nationwide selected to receive Office Depot’s “Businesswoman of the Year” Award.
    • 2006: Community Advocate Award, Greater Austin Chamber
