    The Decentraland Metaverse Festival

    The Decentraland Metaverse Festival

Decentraland is a blockchain-based platform that allows users to build avatars and explore, develop, and transact in an expansive virtual world. Download the brave browser and a metamask wallet and get ready for the first “Metaverse Festival” October 21-24. Featuring multiple stages, merch booths, VIP lounges and games, attendees can look forward to artists like Deadmau5 and DJ Paris Hilton while they take in the wearables, digital assets, and NFTs all around them.

    _____________________________

0:30 - Digital events in the metaverse can eliminate barriers to entry
1:11 - Just like you’d walk around in a mall and see available assets, the metaverse offers digital assets all over the virtual world
1:33 - These are virtual assets with a second life on secondary markets (like #OpenSea) beyond the initial purchase
1:50 - In-game “wearables” (virtual clothing/accessories) have resale value (not like FarmVille or freemium games with their in-game purchases)
2:45 - Web3 uses tokens as a “native currency” just like countries have currencies
3:19 - Back in 2015, the Argentinian developers were using proof-of-work to offer digital real estate in the metaverse. Parcels going for $20 back then have hit 6-digit sales in 2021.
4:00 - Sotheby’s has a plot of land offering collectibles for sale, other retailers want to build close by for digital foot traffic sales.
4:25 - NFTs in the metaverse are a new form of advertising exposure
4:30 - So what do we need to participate in all this fun stuff? A web3 browser (like Brave browser), a digital wallet (like Metamask for Brave browser), and some ETH in your pocket.
4:55 - Your digital wallet is your gateway to the metaverse - it holds all your digital assets, from your $MANA tokens to the LAND you own.
5:40 - How the internet is different from the blockchain internet with your digital wallet
6:40 - Your digital wallet is almost a universal login/password for traveling on the blockchain
7:00 - Yep, we all need Ether (ETH) to pay those pesky gas fees
7:33 - Early adoption is ripe with opportunity!
7:49 - experience is the best teacher, get an avatar and start with the free options
8:00 - dressing your avatar up with wearables
9:37 - Early adopters: this 4 day festival is free! It might not be like this forever!

    MiamiCoin, CityCoins & Civic Engagement

    MiamiCoin, CityCoins & Civic Engagement

Mayor Francis Suarez dubbed Miami the “crypto capital of the world” and launched the first CityCoins project, MiamiCoin, on June 8th. CityCoins allow people to mine municipal coins, yield “stacks” for a city’s crypto treasury, earn Bitcoin, and support cities along the way. Join Alex and Jacki as they break down this new form of civic engagement and what it means in terms of market participation and governance for residential token holders.
    ________________________________

0:45 - Commissioners of Miami approved to accept ~$5 million USD of MiamiCoin cryptocurrency funds to use for community programs
1:15 - CityCoins allow users to mine coins, yield Bitcoin (Stacks), and support your favorite cities along the way.
1:30 - Cryptocurrency is a unique opportunity to learn financial systems
1:42 - Miners participate in the system by mining coins, 30% directly goes to the municipal city wallet, 70% goes back to the mining community
2:23 - Stacks is a layer-1 blockchain using “Proof-of-Transfer” protocol to bring smart contract functionality to the Bitcoin blockchain.
3:21 - Block Stacks allow for the “Bitcoin Naming Service” where you can buy domain names on the Bitcoin blockchain
3:43 - The Bitcoin Naming Service allows wallet addresses to be “named,” so instead of a long alphanumeric series, a wallet could be name Userswallet.BTC for example
4:14 - MiamiCoin is the first CityCoins project, but they are looking to expand, San Fran is a likely runner up.
4:30 - CityCoins are helping the market develop a relationship with the city that can inform the job that the city is doing. If you like how the city is running, keep stacking — if you don’t, stack your coins in another city you think is doing a better job
5:00 - How will this play out when municipalities can see their local markets are investing in other cities?
5:48 - Citizens can now vote with the coins. That’s what governance tokens are all about, voting rights on applications or platforms and how they are run.
6:20 - Miami Herald reported these CityCoins will interact with Decentralized Apps.
6:35 - Transparent block explorers will allow residents to log on an app and see what the city officials are doing with the crypto funds
8:30 - Anyone in the US that wished to speculate on the STX token can use the OKCoin exchange.
8:58 - CityCoins explain they are shifting from “municipal debt” to “municipal equity”
10:27 - Moving from centralized to decentralized network models will change society throughout development
11:25 - The other end of decentralization is that we are still collecting data and ever-organizing it for community and collective decisions
11:57 - Blockchain empowers people with access to transparent data, third parties don’t have to tell us the story of the data, we can see it for ourselves.
12:34 - The reward schedule for CityCoins is based on Bitcoin, every 10 minutes.
12:47 - For anyone speculating on the STX token, download the STX wallet (a web browser extension) where you can “stack” your tokens & Bitcoin as a reward.
13:19 - Bitcoin (BTC) can of course be exchanged for other cryptos or currencies, which is a nice perk over other native token rewards.

    Alt Coin Season, Invest Wisely!

    Alt Coin Season, Invest Wisely!

Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency, and everything that came after it was known as an “alt coin” — an alternative cryptocurrency to Bitcoin. With over 11,000 alt coin projects available, Alex and Jacki speak to the importance of vetting a project, types of alt-coins, indexes, and staying current with the regulatory environment of your state or country.

    ________________________________

0:34 - There are over 11,000 cryptocurrency projects to invest in
0:45 - People compare this to the 90s internet dot com bubble where 90% of projects failed.
1:00 - But some survived! Who will survive crypto?
1:26 - You must DYOR (Do Your Own Research) and due diligence before investing
1:35 - There are people who use trading tools, like Market Cipher, to trade purely on data
1:40 - When researching, find out who is working on the project, what it solves, and who is funding it
1:52 - Follow the money! Who is expecting a return on investment and how soon?
2:07 - Alt coins are a great way to learn more in crypto
2:08 - We are not financial advisors, but it’s always safe advice to never invest anything you can’t afford to lose
2:14 - Alts are a double edge sword, they can explode in value quickly, but the higher up, the harder they fall.
2:30 - Alex likes to find projects that have unique use cases & utilities and also partnerships with well-known companies or institutions.
3:00 - It’s important to not invest with emotion, it’s easy to get attached to a project, but sometimes it doesn’t make financial sense to hold them
3:17 - Crypto market tends to run in a 4 year cycle—crypto markets tend to hit all time highs 12-18 months after the Bitcoin halvening (every 4 years, last one in May 2020)
3:45 - In bear markets, alt coins tend to lose 85-99% of their value.
4:25 - This bull run saw a big bump in NFT trading, and introduced the Metaverse Index to more people
4:50 - Indexes, or Token Sets (on the Ethereum network), are similar to traditional financial index funds.
5:00 - With a token set like Metaverse or DeFi Pulse, when you invest in the token you’re investing in a basket of cryptos, so the performance of the token is based on a weighted index.
5:36 - Stable coins offer some relief for new crypto adopters. These coins simply represent a real asset (like gold or silver) stored somewhere in the world.
5:58 - The USDC is a stable coin backed by a US dollar.
6:40 - Some common pitfalls when getting into alts: the exchange you use might not carry the coin, you may need another wallet, the coin may not be legal in your area
6:52 - It’s very important to understand the regulation in the state and/or country you live in.
7:00 - For example, New York State requires a bit-license for available exchanges.
7:20 - Cryptos with utility are good to look at, such as Ether because it is the “gas” that “fuels” the Ethereum network.
8:00 - Binance offers a ton of coins, but we don’t have it here in New York State
8:26 - When MCA works with clients, we steer from Binance and instead direct them toward regulated, reputable exchanges that offer some type of insurance or protection for their users.
8:43 - Heads up! Moving your crypto around or cashing it out can be a taxable event!
9:13 - There are tax softwares out there - like cointracker.io - that can help you keep track of things.
9:44 - What is the correlation between Bitcoins price and the alt coin market?
10:00 - Generally, Bitcoin is the benchmark for the industry - back in ’17 Bitcoin would pump, and Ethereum and other coins would follow suit.

    Proof-of-Work, Proof-of-Stake and Proof-of-Cardano?

    Proof-of-Work, Proof-of-Stake and Proof-of-Cardano?

Bitcoin mining is frequently in the news for its energy consumption, and Cardano, one of our favorite blockchain projects, invites a discussion on how cryptocurrencies are created (or “mined”) in the first place. Join Alex & Jacki as they break down proof-of-work and proof-of-stake blockchain protocols and how they are innovating energy sourcing and distribution in different ways.

1:48 - proof-of-stake is a great way for anyone with any amount of money to get started with crypto rewards
2:00 - proof-of-work is super secure, but takes a lot of money and energy to mine and profit from.
2:10 - How does proof-of-work mining secure blockchain networks?
    3:00 - How does proof-of-stake do it?
3:35 - The energy issue proof-of-work mining (both ethereum and bitcoin use this protocol)
3:50 - the media puts a lot of noise out there, but mining operations are driving innovation in reusable energy sources & green technologies
    4:24 -
4:20 - geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind, battery cells, fuel cells, and nuclear fission are all contenders in replacing the coal and fossil fuel industries.
    5:11 - Ethereum is moving from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake “Ethereum 2.0”
5:30 - the intense “work” that goes into “proof-of-work” is what secures the network.
6:18 - In proof-of-stake, malicious staking pools or wallets lose all of their stake and are penalized.
6:45 - In order to manipulate the blockchain, you have to manipulate every block that came before it! An insane amount of energy would be needed for this.
7:30 - blockchain ledgers keep a record just like a checkbook going back to the first check
7:39 - blockchain eliminates the issue of “double-spending” and will have a huge impact in the accounting industry.
7:57 - Cardano’s smart contracts introduce token utility.
8:15 - “CarDex” - a decentralized exchange on the Cardano network
8:45 - proof-of-stake is quicker and less expensive than proof-of-work
    9:00 - proof-of-stake has a horizontal scalability
9:30 - a lot of staking pools have interactive communities behind them that help users on their passive income journey
9:48 - mass adoption of crypto means scaling at the levels of MasterCard and Visa

What is Cryptocurrency and Why Should I Care?

What is Cryptocurrency and Why Should I Care?

The crypto market experienced a nice surge this past week, and the activity has reignited interest in digital assets and decentralized finance. Join Alex & Jacki as they take this opportunity to get back to the basics of what cryptocurrency is and why anyone should care about this industry. We are here for all of your crypto needs! Check out www.mycryptoadvisor.com; we are here to help you and your business understand blockchain cryptocurrency and capitalize on early adoption!

    ________________________________

    Show Notes:
0:40 - Cryptocurrencies are backed by blockchain technology - similar to a bank ledger where transactions are recorded. In place of trusting banks like we do now, we only need to trust the code and rules of a blockchain network.
1:11 - This technology allows you to be your own bank.
1: 20 - 2017 World Bank showed 1.7 billion people without access to financial services.
1:50 - Anyone with a mobile phone and internet connection can access financial services.
1:57 - Staking earns interest on crypto, far superior to traditional interest rates.
2:15 - The farmer in a developing country has the same access to crypto as a broker on Wall Street.
2:34 - Most of our money is already digitized, it’s important to recognize our current weaknesses to grasp the promise of blockchain.
2:46 - A blockchain network is a large network of computers (nodes) that secure the network (more nodes, more security). Every update is distributed to each node, all working together to strengthen the network. This makes the system virtually unhackable.
3:12 - the data blocks on a network are cryptographically secured, meaning complex math equations run by the nodes are what creates & secures each block. Our current digital money systems do not have anything close to this type of security.
3:30 - We are moving from our current “centralized” banking to a “decentralized” system. Nodes are distributed all over the world.
3:57 - For example, a network with servers in one geographic area is much more open to hacking than one that has various global locations.
4:40 - The big two cryptos - Bitcoin and Ethereum - are both being actively used to due business online right now. So are they currencies, assets, commodities? Global governments are still figuring this one out.
5:15 - “cyrptocurrency” is a bit of a misnomer — the Paraguay bill defines them as “digital assets.” They are more than exchanging value - some have utility, like Ether as “gas” that fuels the Ethereum network.
6:01 - Crypto can also be a “tokenized asset” - like PAX gold (paxos.com) where one token represents one ounce of gold stored in a vault.
6:24 - USD coin is a tokenized version of the US dollar.
6:48 - Is the US digital dollar included in the overall Federal Reserve?
7:10 - The current US dollar tokens are mainly coming from the private sector. But the Federal Reserve is working on a digital coin that could be directly deposited to its citizens, bypassing commercial banks.
7:51 - The US Post Office has a new role: They are going to help people set up digital wallets and also house crypto ATMs.
8:10 - The majority of Bitcoin ATMs are in the US. Imagine going to another country and simply scanning a QR code to sell some Bitcoin and receive the local currency.
8:40 - So why should we care? For starters, countries are ready to make Bitcoin legal tender. El Salvador was the first adopter - with many South American countries and Malta all crafting plans to be next.
9:00 - Many retailers are accepting Bitcoin: Etsy, AT&T, Dominos, BMW, AMC theaters … and even charities like the United Way and the Red Cross.
9:35 - Additionally, we can see the growing number of ATMs and companies/institutions putting Bitcoin on their balance sheets or allowing their investors to trade, it is really growing in the last two years.
10:00 - If you work in banking, this is the time to learn about cryptocurrencies! Consumers are asking questions, and financial institutions need to have intelligent responses.

    SHOW NOTES:

0:15 - Today we are going to talk about the underbelly of the cryptocurrency market: scams.

0:30 - The scam Alex received that inspired this episode.

0:50 - “Cleveland Bank” had multiple PDFs about their business, a website, a phone number—but they were requesting cryptocurrency that’s the first red flag.

1:10 - Anyone in crypto on social media is receiving spam/scam emails on the daily. You must vet before you invest!

1:49 - Red flags: no CEOs or pictures of the members that run the bank.

2:00 - Ransomware has increased over 300%, from January of 19, to January of this year.

2:22 - Ransomware in the Colonial Pipeline in May of this year shut down a system and requested Bitcoin in return.

2:40 - Chain Analysis reports that illicit activity only made up 0.34% of all cryptocurrency transaction per volume in 2020, which is actually a reduction from ~2% in 2019.

3:03 - the majority of transactions on the blockchain are public, although there are private blockchains like Monero, the majority are public.

3:15 - The transactions that happen on Bitcoin and Ethereum are public. Anyone with a mobile phone internet connection can view the transactions happening in real time, which is how the Justice Department for the Colonial Pipeline hack was able to track and see the wallets the illegal transactions went to.

4:45 - We do welcome regulation for illicit activity but are careful to avoid stifling innovation and creativity.

5:00 - Dusting attacks: scammers basically sprinkle cryptocurrency wallets with a tiny bit of money in the hopes of unmasking or de-anonymizing.

5:28 - if you see a small amount of cryptocurrency randomly enter your wallet, generally, that's a phishing scam or could lead to potential cyber extortion.

5:57 - The act of “dusting” is used by marketers, too, who attach a message to the dusted crypto — very comparable to an email blast.

6:43 - Another scam is receiving a random cryptocurrency that requires signing up for another exchange in order to sell the crypto (basically just getting your info on an exchange that doesn’t even exist). Pro-tip: check out Coin Market Cap and see if there was any liquidity and what financial backing the coin has.

9:37 - There's almost 11,000 projects at the moment. Many do the same thing and lack a unique use case and/or utility. Some are just outright scams.

9:50 - Venture Capital firms and individuals receive pro

10:35 - Programmers asking people for “x” amount per month and they’ll tell you how to pump & dump. High caution for those who believe in “get rick quick” crypto schemes.

11:18 - The people who got in early make out and the majority of investors are the bag holders of cryptocurrencies that are worth nothing,

    11:30 - Dogecoin, whales & market manipulation.

11:50 - A rampant problem in crypto right now is cat-fishing — people creating fake accounts of real people and messaging their friend’s list with crypto scams.

12:50 - My Crypto Advisor NEVER reaches out requesting cryptocurrency or pumping projects.
