    3. A sugar pill is not offered in cancer research. All participants receive a drug.

    4. A participant in a clinical trial receives a better quality of care.

    5. Although 5 - 10% of breast cancer is hereditary, it is very important to know your family history of cancer.

Providing a Lifeline to People on Cancer Island with Sarah McDonald

At 44, Sarah McDonald was newly married, newly promoted, and planning pregnancy. It felt like a time of new beginnings in her life when suddenly she was diagnosed with a rare, incurable cancer. Two months later she was diagnosed with another, unrelated cancer. Remembering a Family Matriarch Who Sparked Purple Pansies with Maria Fundora

Remembering a Family Matriarch Who Sparked Purple Pansies with Maria Fundora

Maria Fundora founded the nonprofit, Purple Pansies in 2008 following her mother’s death from pancreatic cancer. She felt called to raise awareness and crucial research dollars for this chronically underfunded but deadly cancer. To date, Purple Pansies has raised over $4 Million to fund research through TGen and aid affected families. The mission of Purple Pansies is to raise funds for research, clinical trials, and early detection, and to aid families in the community who have a family member suffering from pancreatic cancer and financially can use their help.

A few highlights from the show:

    1. Pancreatic cancer is sometimes called a “silent” disease because symptoms are rarely noticeable in its early stages. If symptoms are present, they are often vague and can be easy to ignore.

    2. A few symptoms: abdominal or mid-back pain, change in stool, digestive problems such as gas and bloating, and several others.

    3. Pancreatic cancer awareness month is in November.

    4. Pansies are resilient flowers. The root grows strong all winter and they grow during the worst of times in the winter. Hence, Purple Pansies.

    5. Don't be afraid to get a second opinion when you or a loved one are diagnosed with cancer and trying to determine the best treatment options.

    6. Maria has a couple of goals that she could use your help with.

     a. Expand the Purple Pansies Board. She is looking for volunteers to be on the Board and chair committees to help Purple Pansies become a national footprint.

    b. Develop an early detection test for pancreatic cancer.

🟣c.  A very personal goal of Maria's is to have a major sports team wear purple during the month of November and have a major team be a part of the Board. #MNVikings #MNLynx #MNTimberwolves #MNTwins

    2. We have control over what we "think" is happening to us.

    3. It is counterproductive to feel guilty about having cancer.

Visible Symptoms of Prostate Cancer and the Benefits of Being a Member of the 7 O'Clock Club with Barry Furey

Barry Furey has been involved in public safety since 1970, having served as a fire officer in three states and a 9-1-1 director in four. Additionally, he has provided consulting services worldwide and is an award-winning author. At age 70, he spends most of his time as a dad of three children under eleven, the youngest born after his battle with prostate cancer.

A few highlights from the show:

    1. Prostate cancer is known as a 'silent killer' due to not usually causing any symptoms until it has grown large enough to put pressure on the urethra. Typically, there is no discomfort in the very early stages of prostate cancer.

    2. Many men's prostates get larger as they get older because of a non-cancerous condition called benign prostate enlargement.

    3. Firefighters have been shown in meta-analyses to have an increased incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) compared with the general population.

Breast Cancer Thriver, Patricia Muir Helps Women Return to Work and Thrive After Cancer

Breast Cancer Thriver, Patricia Muir Helps Women Return to Work and Thrive After Cancer

Patricia is a veteran businesswoman who thrives on working with women entrepreneurs, executives, and highly skilled professionals. Patricia is an accredited professional coach specializing in Emotional Intelligence Leadership. Combining entrepreneurial experience, knowledge of legislation, and her work in emotional intelligence, Patricia develops coaching programs that support a successful return to work after cancer and finding fulfillment after 60.  Patricia produces the podcast “Executive Encore: Women Finding Fulfillment After 60” and blogs weekly for her audience.

In 2013, Patricia received her diagnosis of breast cancer. After a few weeks to recover from surgery (and the shock), Patricia returned to work during radiation treatments. Patricia experienced a loss of verve, zest, and her edge! Patricia immersed herself in intensive healing programs and group support provided by her local cancer center to support her healing and personal growth. But there was a gap!

Patricia’s own struggles and conversations with other businesswomen with cancer taught her that there are challenges and fears uniquely experienced by women who have reached a pinnacle in their personal and professional life.

✨A few highlights from the show:

    1. Emotional intelligence is fluid.

    2. Decision-making is emotional intelligence.

    3. Self-care is emotional self-care also.

    🦄About Me:

In 2011, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma, out of the blue. I did not have any prior health concerns or issues. Fast forward, the dreaded cancer diagnosis opened my eyes, introduced me to my purpose, and lead me to where I am today.

As a Cancer Doula, I use my 11 years of experience with cancer to support and guide others diagnosed with cancer. Many people are not familiar with what a cancer doula is. Think of me as a personal patient advocate. Schedule a free 30-minute Meet and Greet call to learn more. https://bit.ly/OTOSDiscovery
