    Tales of Murderous Victorian Police

Tales of Murderous Victorian Police - Wicked Wednesdays
News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840
Our first case from 1860 is a robbery and murder that then unfurls into a tale even more nefarious.  Accusations are made as to who the culprit is with a view to getting their hands on the £300 reward money.  But are they telling the truth or are they framing another for the murder they themselves committed?  Scotland Yard became involved in this one and managed to see through the smoke and mirrors.
Our second case from 1897 is a bizarre and twisting tale as a young girl forms an intimacy with a married retired policeman resulting in a child.  As the policeman’s panic sets in when she threatens to call in authorities, she ends up dead.  But was it murder or suicide? And what role did the wife play?
Two twisted tales of murder involving Victorian policemen is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
We hope you enjoy the show!

    Murder and Cannibalism

Murder and Cannibalism - Frightful Fridays
    News of the Times Episode 248 | 1845 - 1888
In today’s episode we are looking at three cases of human beings placed under the harshest of conditions and the murder and documented cannibalism that ensued.
Our first case from 1845 is the doomed attempt to find the Northwest passage. Scurvy, food poisoning, and ultimately cannibalism in the arctic eventually is believed to have killed off all 127 crew members.
Our second case from 1884 took place in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.  The 7 survivors, days away from dying, admit to having had to resort t murder, then cannibalism.
Our last case from 1888 is still remembered today in the UK.  Losing their ship and living in a small craft in open ocean with no water or food - one of them must be sacrificed to feed the others.
Three cases of murder and cannibalism is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.

    Forgotten Ripper Victims?

Forgotten Ripper Victims - Wicked Wednesdays
News of the Times Episode 247 | 1888-1891
Historically, there has been much speculation regarding possible murders beyond the ripper “canonical five”.  At the time, the police were highly motivated and pressured to give an appearance that they had a grip on the killings and that their counter actions were having a positive impact in reducing the number of horrific murders.  But were they successful in keeping the ripper down to only five killings?
In today’s episode we look at three killings in the area between 1888 and 1891 that historians have speculated were ripper killings.  We take a look at the three victims and delve into the question of whether there were more ripper killings occurring beyond Mary Jane Kelly.
Three cases of murders that historians speculate could have bene ripper killings is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.

The Dark Secrets of Evil Abbe Bruneau

The Dark Secrets of Evil Abbe Bruneau
News of the Times Episode 246 | 1894
Evil Abbe Bruneau – a name still remembered in France!  In 1894, in a village located in Brittany, an abbe of the local church is found dead in a well, severely battered.  It would appear that logs had been thrown on top of him once he was in the well.
What unfolds is a tale of debauchery, arson, scandal, forgery, and a few horrific murders as well.  The tale of Abbe Bruneau’s crimes would be considered salacious by most standards.  We take a look at the man and the crimes of Abbe Bruneau in today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.

Doctors of Death - History Compilation

Doctors of Death - History Compilation
News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840
In today’s history compilation, we look at four doctors of death:

Dr William Palmer -the “Prince of Poisoners” 1855.  Referenced by Sherlock Holmes, Dr Palmer loved to gamble thereby requiring large amounts of money.  Palmer worked his way through acquaintances unfortunate to have been waylaid onto his path, friends who he watched die excruciatingly, and several family members.

Dr Smethurst 1859.  Married Dr Smethurst starts an intimacy with a woman of independent means.  Bigamously marrying her, her health starts to fail almost immediately, but not before she conveniently signs over all her possessions before dying.

Dr Pritchard 1863. Pritchard, referenced as the “Scottish Palmer” was always in search of women and money.  Mysterious fires, with insurance claims, and even more mysterious deaths followed him.

Dr Buck Ruckston 1935.  Ruckston, historically referred to as the “Jigsaw Murderer”, was popular with his patients and was an extremely jealous man.  One day, he just snaps.  What evolves is a bloodbath as he attempts to dispose of bodies.  This case featured some very m0odern, in its day, forensic investigation.

Four cases of doctors who left a trail of death and destruction is today’s episode of Doctors of Death - History Compilation.

We take a look at the history of these floating hulk horrors and some of the escape stories in today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.

    Bloodthirsty Women in History

    Bloodthirsty Women in History

    Bloodthirsty Women in History
    News of the Times Episode 242  | 1450 - 1905
In 1905, the question is asked in the papers: Are Women more Bloodthirsty Than Men?
This news article looks at several ruthless female killers in history and thre crimes they committed including murderers:
    American Belle Gunness
    French Jeanne Weber
    American Jane Toppan
    French Madame de Brinvilliers
    Catherine de Medici
    Kate Bender and more!
The question is an interesting one as we have heard from some of our subscribers their understanding that female serial killers were unusual.  We have not found this ourselves.
A question that still resounds today: Are women more bloodthirsty than men? Is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
We hope you enjoy the show!

    The Monster Fritz Haarman

The Monster Fritz Haarman - Serial Killer Saturdays
News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840
    ***WARNING DISTURBING CONTENT***
In the annals of crime, Fritz Haarman could be regarded as one of the worst killers of all time, or so said the English papers in 1923 as the horrific full nature of his many murders became unveiled.
His case was deemed worse than England’s Jack the Ripper in the press.  Indeed, there are echoes 100 years later of Gacy and Dahmer when reading the Edwardian highly suppressed accounts of his crimes.
The monster, living fiend, German Jack the ripper – Fritz Haarman – is today’s episode of Serial Killer Saturdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

    Murders in County Durham

    Murders in County Durham

    Murders in County Durham
News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840
Our first case of 1884 involves the actual stoning to death of Sergeant Smith in the tightly-knit colliery town of Butterknowle.  There has been bad blood between Sergeant Smith and one of the local lads.  Three young men are quickly picked up as suspects.  The case itself was difficult – who had actually killed Sgt Smith?  And would the community band with boys or look to see justice done?  An interesting case with a very surprising ending.
Our second case from 1928 involves the shocking finding of a hand sticking up from the ground by a woman looking to collect some soil to re-pot her plant.  Mr and Mrs Kirby are found buried – the autopsy reveals that they were both buried alive.  The culprit is someone surprisingly close to home.
Two shocking cases of murder in County Durham is today’s episode of Frightful Fridays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

    Murder & "The Unwritten Law"

    Murder & "The Unwritten Law"

    Murder & "The Unwritten Law"
    News of the Times Episode 238 | 1922 & 1926
The “Unwritten Law”, when a person can take vengeance on another for a slur upon the family honour, is very un-English.  It is more to be expected from the French, although it is now called “Crimes of Passion”.
France is indeed the location of our first case which comes from Bordeaux in 1922.  Actress Gabrelle Perron is being cheated upon with her husband having placed the new mistress in apartments across the street.  In a fit of jealous passion, Mme Perron shoots her husband.  The trial and verdict were worthy of a heavy melodrama that fascinated the English at the time.
Then, in 1926, we English had our own salacious version of the same love triangle with tragic consequences.  The players in this drama are an international sports figure and the heir to two fortunes from Canada. Was it a planned murder, manslaughter, or just an unfortunate event?  The theatrics from the defence, Sir Marshall Hall, had at least one member of the court in uncontrollable tears.
Two cases of murder and the “Unwritten Law” is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

Scotland Yard Casebook: Murder at Road Hill House

Scotland Yard Casebook: Murder at Road Hill House

Scotland Yard Casebook: Murder at Road Hill House
News of the Times Episode 233 | 1860
In today’s episode we are in rural Wiltshire in 1860 where a dreadful murder has taken place with a three year old boy who has had his throat slashed to the spine with a furtive attempt to then stuff his body down the toilet head first.
Like a classic locked room mystery, only those in the household could have committed this evil deed.  The tension within is palatable, with children from the first marriage resentful of wife number 2 and the new children.
As the local constabulary are viewed as bungling the investigation, the new Detective Department in London - the basis of Scotland Yard -is approached for help.  They in turn send their very best at the time, the famous Jack Whicher, the “Prince of Detectives”, who was said to be the basis for Dickens famous Inspector Bucket.
The twists and turns of this infamous case in rural Wiltshire 1860 is today’s episode of Murderous Mondays.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

The Notorious French Ogress Serial Killer - Jeanne Weber

The Notorious French Ogress  Serial Killer - Jeanne Weber
    Serial Killer Saturdays
    News of the Times Episode 232 | 1905 - 1908
Today’s episode, from 1905 to 1908 France, investigates the case of Jeanne Weber, a thrice accused serial killer who managed to avoid justice twice.  Employing strangulation techniques which were difficult to spot in Edwardian England, Jeanne Weber managed to evade justice several times, continue her killing spree over 2 years, and elicit apologies for her hounding from the newspapers.  For some time, there was much sympathy within the press and within the public for Jeanne Weber, until she was caught red handed…

A fascinating 1905 French serial killer, whose preferred modus operandi was slow strangulation, is today’s episode of Serial Killer Saturdays.

    Hosted by Robin Coles.
