Ep. 106: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

    The buzz... is BACK!

This week, Cody and Matt find themselves on different sides of the county line as they go head-to-head over this divisive sequel. They discuss franchise expectations, Tobe Hooper's artistic vision, and the long shadow of the original film. They also go non-stop on Chop Top, Leapin' Leatherfaces, and silly chili patrons but manage to find common ground on horror icon Caroline Williams.

Pull up a chair, make yourself a french fry house, and watch out for those... ahem... "peppercorns."

    Ep. 105: Ringu (1998)

    Ep. 105: Ringu (1998)

Don't we lose it all every seven days...well...WELL...

This week, Matt and Cody are unkind (as usual) and rewind back to the 90's for one of the most influential Japanese Horror movies of all time. The boys pair off two at a time and cross the stormy seas to an inevitable eruption of names they can't remember, familial lineage they can't get straight, and veteran character actors they never want to forget. Not to mention: what really was on that tape in the manager's office, phone chats with bees, bangin' wigs, what was Yiochi watching and who was watching him, and how deep in the well they're willing to go themselves...and based on their jokes...you already know the answer.

You don't even have to crawl through your phone to get to this week's episode, but it would help if you're already soggy.

Ep. 104: The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)

Ep. 104: The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)

    True... True... TRUE!

This week, Cody and Matt descend into the dark abyss that is Edgar Allan Poe's horrific tale of pits, pendulums, and incredibly thick cobwebs. They discuss the creative liberties one might take while adapting the classics, the ghoulish glory of the set decorator, and the legacy of director/producer/icon Roger Corman. They also fawn over the immortal Vincent Price and devilishly talented Barbara Steele while trying to figure out exactly why their basement was so incredibly kinky.

Join us on this dark and stormy night somewhere in... Spain?

Ep. 103: The Last House on the Left (1972)

Ep. 103: The Last House on the Left (1972)

    It's Only a Pod...It's Only a Pod...It's Only a Pod...

This week, Matt and Cody missed a turn somewhere back there, took a right, then a left, followed a road, and ended up in this Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham cult classic. The boys have a hay day with direction puns, kazoo musical stings, and diabolical parental revenge. Not to mention: the legacy of these horror masters, cops that won't stop, multi-purpose hair pieces, the real intention behind getting those criminals to the lake, words they don't like, and one of the pluckiest and cluckiest Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor nominees ever discussed on this show.

    Shotgun! No really...shotgun!!

    Ep. 102: Jennifer's Body (2009)

    Ep. 102: Jennifer's Body (2009)

We all knew that love hurts... but this is ridiculous!

This week, Cody and Matt celebrate Valentine's Day and take a bite out of this cult classic. They discuss awkward teen love, high school in the 00's, and how effective a funny wig on JK Simmons can really be. After sorting out who are the "cool guys" and the "hoes", the boys dive into the importance of a specific tone, confusing marketing, and the powerhouse that is a Fox/Seyfried team-up.

The year is flying by faster than an Amy Sedaris cameo, so don't forget to send out those Valentine's cards!

Ep. 101: The Bad Seed (1956)

Ep. 101: The Bad Seed (1956)

What will you give us for a basket full of nonsense?

This week, Matt and Cody take the Rhoda less traveled back to the fifties to cover one of the most prominent stage-to-screen adaptations in Horror. The boys, or is it "Le Boys", tap-tap-tap their way around stagy thrillers, creepy squeegees, and how far they are willing to go for a school assignment. Not to mention: psychology and societal expectations, other actors who fought for the roles, how this movie paved the way for some modern award hopefuls, and one of the most shocking (literally) demises this show has ever covered. It's an episode full of demented kids, psychotic building attendants, drunken accusers, and iconic land ladies...but why should this week be any different?

    Ep. 100: Candyman (1992)

    Ep. 100: Candyman (1992)

    Be our victim...

Well, if you're listening, you already kind of are. This week, Cody and Matt celebrate the 100th episode (and 106th film, but don't get them going) with one of the most iconic horror movie characters of all time. The boys discuss seductive filmmaking techniques, captivating lead performances, and the delicate balance between narrative and theme. They also decide to put a hat on a hat (or a hook on a hook) by diving deep into the importance of slasher fashion, origin stories that seem a little much, and filling this episode with enough bee puns to shake a hook at.

There's a lot to (honey)comb through with this 90's icon!

    Ep. 99: The Shining (1980)

    Ep. 99: The Shining (1980)

    Heeeeeeere's Night Howls!

This week, Matt and Cody kick off Year 3 with their favorite family of 3, The Torrances and one of the most highly regarded Horror films of all time. The boys whip their big wheel around their usual nonsense while getting lost in a maze of theories and readings that will have them shining for help in no time. They talk comparisons to the source material, why Stephen King hated this adaptation so much, and what sorts of historical perspectives Kubrick may have been reaching for. Not to mention: impressive fingers, precarious cigarette ashes, how many ax hacks it takes to get to the center of a hotel and so much more.

Will they make it to the end in one piece or will they DUVALLve into madness as per usual? One way to find out!

    Ep. 98: The Howlers '23

    Ep. 98: The Howlers '23

    And the nominees are...

This week, Matt and Cody are ready to look back on the highs and lows of 2023 in Horror and their favorite movie moments from all the movies they covered. The boys kick things off with a year-in-review and a quick discussion on what they're most excited for in 2024! After that, it's the scariest awards show that doesn't end in a fistfight (yet)!

The nominees are real. The verdicts are final. The Awards are... non-existent, if they’re being totally honest. Who will win the coveted Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor of the Year? What about Howler’s Choice, Outstanding Animal, Golden F’pang, and the Doomsayer Ribbon? Will they end up awarding most of these completely on a whim? Only one way to find out!

Thanks for listening and for a great 2023!

    Ep. 97: Child's Play 2 (1990) w/ Christine Elise

    Ep. 97: Child's Play 2 (1990) w/ Christine Elise

"You seen dolls that pee? This one bleeds..."

This week, Cody and Matt are joined by legendary Horror Hero, Christine Elise, to talk about one of the all-time greatest Horror sequels, Child's Play 2. The boys continue their discussion on the impact of this franchise from last week before diving all in with their incredibly special guest. Topics include: Christine's hilarious book 'Bathing and the Single Girl', living in the age of social media and making things for yourself, what it was like to work with two pint sized co-stars, and what happened to her iconic leather hat. Not to mention: how she landed the role of Kyle, what her first meeting with Jennifer Tilly was like, and even which horror franchise she'd take a stab at next.

It's our final movie of the year, but stay tuned for more information on our Year 2 finale coming soon!

    Ep. 96: Child's Play (1988)

    Wanna play?

The unofficial Year of the Doll comes to a head... a red head, that is! This week, Cody and Matt find out if they're a couple of Good Guys with this staple of 80's horror. They discuss the origins of Chucky, the evils of consumerism, and their undying love for Brad Dourif. They also debate the effectiveness of the Chicago police force, the size of a hammer, and who exactly deserves the Fred Gwynne Veteran Character Actor Award.

They're friends to the end... even if they don't want to be.

    Ep. 95: The Witch (2015)

    Ep. 95: The Witch (2015)

Would you like to live deliciously?

This week, Matt and Cody jump onto the back of a horse-drawn carriage and embark on new territory with the Robert Egger's modern classic, The Witch (or VVitch if you're extra ye olde). The boys talk all about the introduction of Eggers and Anya Taylor-Joy to the horror genre, puritanical tyranny, who really is the the witch in the wood, and which goat is truly the G.O.A.T...

So, load up your family, grab your best pilgrim hat, and sign your name in the book of Night Howls, because there's only two more movie episodes of the year before we crawl back into our witch huts until next year!

    Ep. 94: Halloween 45

    Ep. 94: Halloween 45

Last month, Matt and Cody had the opportunity to celebrate their favorite shared franchise's birthday by exploring the Halloween 45th Anniversary Convention in Pasadena, CA. The boys reminisce on the experience of meeting so many of their heroes including: PJ Soles, Nancy Loomis, Diva Tyler, Nick Castle, Tommy Lee Wallace, Adrienne Barbeau, Dee Wallace, and so many more! Not to mention, four exclusive panels they attended diving deep into the eras of this iconic film series. Who knows? Maybe the boys recorded those panels and included them in this episode? IF THEY WERE TO DO SUCH A THING, those timestamps would be:

    Halloween '78  - 42:02
    Halloween 4 and 5 - 1:19:14
    Halloween '18-Ends - 1:50:19
    John Carpenter  - 2:45:16
Decompress and Guessing Game for Next Week: 3:23:51

    Ep. 92: Terrifier (2016)

    Happy Howl-o-ween!

In this first half of our special Halloween Double Feature, and in celebration of the show's 100th movie discussion, Matt and Cody cozy up with one of Horror's hottest killers: Art the Clown! They discuss the importance of an iconic killer, the insane practical effects, and why a bit of splatter always matters.

They also ponder the wait time for two slices of pizza, the history of creepy clowns, and helpful radio announcers that have absolutely no chill. The show also dives into chaos as the boys try on comical wigs...

The inmates are truly running the asylum.

    Ep. 91: The Babadook (2014)

    Ep. 91: The Babadook (2014)

    Knock...knock...knock...

This week, Matt and Cody pretend they know how to read and dive dook first into this modern classic of grief and monsters. "The Boy(s)" talk creaky floors, self-opening doors, and meta...phors! Not to mention: how the Babadook gained icon status, potential unseen partners for Mrs. Roach, why Samuel doesn't deserve a birthday party or a DAAAAAAD, and so much more!

You've hidden us away, burned us, and tore us up, but somehow we always find our way back. To quote another famous wordsmith, "You've got 99 problems (Night Howls movie episodes) and The Babadook is now one!"

    Ep. 90: Häxan (1922)

    Ep. 90: Häxan (1922)

    Which witch?

This week, Cody and Matt conjure some tongue-wagging devils and dive into this staple of scary Swedish cinema. They discuss the influential characterizations of Hell and the damned, the horrors of those accused of witchcraft, and the special effects mastery on full display. It goes without saying at this point that the boys get wildly distracted by axe milking, kissing the Devil's behind, and the attractiveness of a monk who double fists turkey legs.

Bring that cauldron to boil and join these couple of Häx as they cackle their way through a century old tale!

    Ep. 89: Cry_Wolf (2005)

Do you beLIEve in life after love?

This week, Matt and Cody cry wee wee wee all the way back to the early aughts for the very first PG-13 slasher in honor of Cody's birthday. The boys gather in a huddle to talk games in horror, dangers of the early internet, and bigger dangers in stunt casting. Not to mention: devilish reveals, killer character creations, embarrassing AIM screen names, and what was really going on in the German Philosophy section. The real twist is the buddy lists you make along the way...

Avoid suspicion. Manipulate your friends. Eliminate your enemies. And for the love of Jon Bon Jovi, silence your phones!

Ep. 88: The McPherson Tape (1989)

Bring a bucket and a mop... for this UAP.

This week, Cody and Matt search the skies for the first potential American found-footage horror movie. They discuss simple and effective storytelling, groundbreaking techniques in the beloved horror sub-genre, and the mysterious tale of how this movie gained its cult status.

The boys also discuss alien smoke breaks, the acceptable amount of knowledge someone should have when it comes to repairing a roof, and drunken grandmothers that really make a party pop.
