The Great Dechurching: Who’s Leaving and What Will It Take to Bring Them Back? with Michael Graham

The Great Dechurching: Who’s Leaving and What Will It Take to Bring Them Back? with Michael Graham

The phenomenon of de-churching, where individuals who used to attend church regularly no longer do so, has been widely discussed. However, finding the origins of this challenge have proven difficult. On this episode of Nuance, Case interviews Michael Graham, co-author of The Great De-Churching, to discuss the surprising data behind the exodus from the pew.

While the church is facing a seismic demographic shift, Graham gives reason to hope that the church can draw people back. He also provides concrete ways that anyone in the local church can help friends, neighbors, and co-workers to rejoin Christ-centered communities.

Emotions and Principles with Andy Blanchard

Emotions and Principles with Andy Blanchard

Do you have the courage to stand up for what you believe while maintaining the humility to learn from others? Do your Christian convictions lead you to have empathy to engage respectfully with those whose views differ from your own, otherwise?   It is much easier to verbalize this than it is to live it out in a hostile workplace.

Principled pluralism is a critical component to a flourishing Christian citizenship. It is the idea that we live in a pluralistic society, whether we want to or not, and in the midst of such different perspectives how do we have clear principles upon which we stand. Today in America emotions are high, political opinions are deep, and truth is often blurred making it incredibly more difficult to enjoy our colleagues, bosses, and work teams.

Andy Blanchard, a licensed mental health counselor, helps us to think more clearly about how our emotions inform our words and behavior, and how Jesus would lead us to respond more effectively. Andy’s therapeutic perspective provides insight into making important distinctions between principles and emotions.

Champion Your Colleagues with Rev. Rufus Smith

Champion Your Colleagues with Rev. Rufus Smith

Hospitality is a foundational aspect of our Christian citizenship because it goes before us in reputation, it guides our embodiment of the Holy Spirit, and it influences how others encounter Christ.

The Reverend Rufus Smith, Senior Pastor of Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Memphis, Tennessee (the largest Presbyterian church in the United States) joins the conversation by lending voice to what he has witnessed among his own congregation. Rev Smith embodies hospitality which is evident from the eight-year transition of a predominantly Caucasian church to a multi-ethnic church in the deep south with 30% of its members being people of color.

Dr. Jonathan Chaplin is widely regarded as an expert in Christian political thought, which includes political philosophy and various Christian traditions (especially Reformed, Catholic and Evangelical.) While we need to grasp our own commitment to Christian citizenship, it is helpful for us to understand other views as well. Dr. Chaplain provides insight into varied Christian views on the public square, and how we are to then live.
