Episode Forty: Ennui on the Mountain

Episode Forty: Ennui on the Mountain

This week we discuss the song Ennui on the Mountain, and spend quite a bit of time sorting out the perfect t-shirt to create around a theme. It's official, we need a merch designer on staff. We discuss the significance of musical influence and the Dave Grohl book, being in our forties, and who is more emo - Hall or Oates? Plus, of course, MK had to work Pedro Pascal and The Last of Us into the episode (because episode three was pure genius, and Pedro is HOT).

Episode Thirty-Eight: Say It Isn't So

Episode Thirty-Eight: Say It Isn't So

It's our first time streaming live on Twitch! Did anyone show up? No, but we also didn't tell anyone because we wanted to make sure we did it right. HA! We discuss the song Say It Isn't So, as well as Halloween costumes, The Lawnmower Man, and the new John Oates Movember look!

This week's unofficial sponsor is  Cole hardware store in San Fran! WOO HOO!

Episode Thirty-Seven: Everything Your Heart Desires

Episode Thirty-Seven: Everything Your Heart Desires

This week we talk about yet another song MK thinks Naomi mentioned liking in the past...only to find out she was wrong again. We spend a great deal of time talking about saxophone players, how to pronounce OOH YEAH, artichokes, and how much more Daryl appears in the video than John. Why is that?

The unofficial sponsor this week is Trader Joe's granola bars!

Episode Thirty-Six: From Philly to Chile

Episode Thirty-Six: From Philly to Chile

We were together in one room - finally! After a fun weekend of shenanigans, we watched From Philly to Chile on Paramount Plus. It's a short little documentary and got us talking about a million other topics that were somehow relevant. The movie BROS, Jameson, wine tasting at Iron Horse Vineyards, and our love of Brad Pitt. Would he make a great Daryl Hall in a biopic? Yes, yes he would. Lots of thoughts on who would play John Oates too...

Episode Thirty-Five: How Does It Feel To Be Back

Episode Thirty-Five: How Does It Feel To Be Back

This week we discuss the song How Does It Feel To Be Back off the Voices Album, as well as discover some amazing things about Mr. GE Smith! Naomi, fresh from a Cimafunk show, introduces us to a gentleman who could be a child of Bruno Mars and John Oates, if that was a possibility. We also have a new favorite DJ on Insta and Tik Tok, as well as thoughts on MK's Peloton.

Episode Thirty-Four: Is It a Star

Episode Thirty-Four: Is It a Star

We had some sound issues this week, but making a podcast on the go while enjoying the Beachlife Ranch festival is not easy! We discuss the amazing Hall and Oates show, as well as the one standout song they played from the War Babies album. We also took a little field trip to see the gents’ star on the Hollywood Walk of fame and had some delicious Korean food! A fun weekend in LA with a Hall and Oates theme for the WIN!

    Episode Thirty-Three: Pleasure Beach

    Episode Thirty-Three: Pleasure Beach

It's finally here - the Beachlife Ranch festival in Redondo Beach! Join us as we chat about our expectations of the show, the delicious brunch we ate, and the song Pleasure Beach! Of course, we digress into convos about Always Sunny in Philidelphia, Bryan Adams, and how we would create a video for this song.

Don't worry - there will be an episode next week all about the show!

    Episode Thirty-Two: She's Gone

    Episode Thirty-Two: She's Gone

This week we chat with Father John Reardon, a former Catholic, and current Episcopal priest. We discuss the song (and video for) She's Gone, the devil and his work on Earth, and how the Indigo Girls inspired John's sermons.

John Reardon is an Episcopal priest, educator, and social worker. He holds a Ph.D. in theology from Fordham University, where he wrote his dissertation about mystical experiences across religious beliefs. John recently moved to his family’s ancestral farm in the Appalachian mountains of western Maryland, where he lives with his dog and three cats.

    Episode Thirty-One: Promise Ain't Enough

    Episode Thirty-One: Promise Ain't Enough

Our guest this week is an amazing podcaster and all-around great guy, Jesse Jackson (not that Jesse Jackson). In addition to discussing The Boss, we relive Prince concerts and dig into the Ticketgate drama. We also talk about television shows like Dr. Who, Only Murders in the Building, House of Dragons, and Sex Education. PLUS we learn about the podcast Dead Eyes and can't wait to dive in. OH - and we focus on the song Promise Ain't Enough from Marigold Sky because HALL AND OATES.

Jesse Jackson has been hosting his Podcast Set Lusting Bruce since 2015.  During that time he has talked to hundreds of music fans from around the world discussing their favorite musicians, bands and songs.  Jesse also is part of other podcasts discussing topics ranging from Doctor Who, Babylon 5, and Game of Thrones. He has seen Bruce Springsteen perform 17 times and counting.  He loves to read, watch TV and obviously podcast.  He lives in the DFW area with his lovely bride Linda and sees his adult son Chris every Sunday during the Cowboy season (where they continue to disappoint them both).  He will pick DC over Marvel, Superman over Batman, Star Trek over Star Wars and is a blueberry in a very strawberry state.

    Episode Thirty: The Last Time

    Episode Thirty: The Last Time

It’s our first song off the album Along the Red Ledge! This week’s rabbit hole takes us on a journey through The Ronettes and Phil Spector, the founding fathers, Jason Momoa’s water, Nimsdai Purja’s mountaineering adventures, and MK’s most embarrassing Instagram DM. We also need someone to help us get some shirts made so we can represent the Hall and Oates pod and our love of these gents when we attend the Beachlife Festival in Redondo Beach!

    Episode Twenty-Nine: Portable Radio

    Episode Twenty-Nine: Portable Radio

We are loving these songs on X-Static! This song is a total bop there is roller skating in the video so we are clearly obsessed. Hear about MK going to see The Weeknd and Magic Mike in Vegas, as well as a million other random things that have very little to do with the song yet somehow work as part of the convo. Is this our new motto? Possibly.

Episode Twenty-Eight: Kiss On My List

Episode Twenty-Eight: Kiss On My List

Talking to Chris (Johnny) Lackey is always a delight! We talk HP Lovecraft, Star Trek, epic kisses, DCI Banks, and a million other topics (as always) while digging into Kiss On My List. Join us for a fun and informative hour of geeking out!

Chris Lackey is the co-host of two shows - The Legendary HPLovecraft Literary Podcast and Rachel Watches Star Trek. Originally from Illinois, now lives in Yorkshire England, Via Los Angeles.

AND he is a baby angel sent straight from heaven!

Episode Twenty-Seven: I'm Watching You (A Mutant Romance)

Episode Twenty-Seven: I'm Watching You (A Mutant Romance)

This week Naomi is in Cape Cod and MK just returned from Outside Lands in SF. During the discussion of our first song from the War Babies album, I'm Watching You (A Mutant Romance), we cover many topics. Dr. Teeth and the Muppets band, Pokemon, Bowie, and a delightful little treat Naomi used to make when we were kids. Ever wonder what it means to call someone a Gingerbread eater? Us too, so if you know please let us know.

    Episode Twenty-Six: Rich Girl

    Episode Twenty-Six: Rich Girl

This week we discuss Rich Girl with our local Rich GUY Douglas Russell! If you’ve ever wondered about the debutant scene in St. Louis and beyond, this episode is for you!

Like a narrator in a Jane Austen novel, Doug Russell grew up the “poor cousin” in a family whose social influence and wealth have spanned three continents, 9 decades, three contested wills, and has affected the St. Louis debutante season, the development of Kodachrome color photography, the commercialization of Root Beer, Communism in Laos, the emergence of Vietnamese war babies, the making of Bruce Lee’s Enter The Dragon, the Home Shopping Network, and four closed sessions Congressional Hearings. The Prodigal Son of a Prodigal Son of a Prodigal Son, Doug’s path has bounced him from the American Mississippi delta, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Bangkok, Thailand, Los Angeles, and Austin, TX, but his heart was always in San Francisco, CA, where he now works as a Harm Reduction Peer Counselor for the Post Overdose Response Team with SFDPH, and promulgates joy as Sister Celine Dionysus in the San Francisco order of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. His special skills include writing the perfect thank you notes, knowing which fork to use, pouring the ideal Sazerac, the filmographies of Buster Keaton and Douglas Siri, and negotiating threesomes and cocaine. He thanks Agatha Christie novels, methamphetamines, disassociation, and Vipassana meditation for getting him to where he is today.

Episode Twenty-Five: Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid

Episode Twenty-Five: Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid

This week we look at the song Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid, and meander around many topics including: drummer Mickey Curry, Moxie Roller Skates, My Favorite Murder, Justin Baldoni, Irma Yep, and Earl’s closet! It’s quite a conversation and we both leave knowing a few things we didn’t know beforehand.

Cocktails this week were Trader Joe’s wine and delicious Ohza Mimosas - thanks Joe Jonas!

    Episode Twenty-Four: Your Imagination

    Episode Twenty-Four: Your Imagination

LJ Johnson is a Bay Area-based rabble-rouser and community mental health worker. As a professional homosexual charged with corrupting the youth into lives of gay hedonism, they are contractually obligated to espouse correct opinions on all things pop culture.

They are also a committed social services provider with over eleven years of direct service experience working with psychosocially complex communities including people experiencing severe and persistent mental illness, LGBTQIA+ youth, people experiencing homelessness, and people who use injection drugs.

We discuss polyamory, Highlander, growing up in the church dating Christian rock musicians, and MK's book about Jesus as an alien. Our conversation about jealousy was enlightening, LJ is truly gifted at not only their job but being a brilliant overachiever in every way!

Episode Twenty-Three: No Brain, No Pain

Episode Twenty-Three: No Brain, No Pain

Can one song encapsulate both the joy and pain of ignorant bliss? The answer is YES! Somehow this song is both a delightful poem about a sunny day sipping wine without a care in the world, and a simplification of a mind so priviledged it cannot think of anyone but itself. Are we talking about the Roe vs. Wade decision? Of course we are! But that's not all - Naomi is at the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, and MK saw Shawn Mendes again, and there is also discussion of monkey minds, punk bands from the 90's, and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

    Episode Twenty-Two: Intravino

    Episode Twenty-Two: Intravino

This week is all about wine! The song Intravino is the perfect soundtrack for a deep discussion with our high school friend and wine aficionado, Jeremy Campbell. We dive into Daryl and John's love of wine, the amazing video for the song, and the intricacies of different varietals...all while drinking wine ourselves. This episode is unofficially brought to you by Naomi's favorite, Navarro vineyards, and MK's can of Babe sparkling red!

Episode Twenty-one: Don't Hold Back Your Love

Episode Twenty-one: Don't Hold Back Your Love

We both tried to find the best PRIDE anthem by Hall and Oates and this is where we landed. A classic 90's video, good hair, generic lyrics that are inclusive...this song ticks many boxes.

Is it possible we didn't really know this song (and many others) in the 90's when we were listening to The Cure and De La Soul? Yes, yes it is. But it's fun to discover and enjoy them all now as more than just Hall and Oates songs in the supermarket aisles.

    Happy Pride, everyone!
