    Paris DJs Podcast

Loik Dury, from the Kraked label, former Radio Nova programmer, and Djouls, from the TIMEC label, have been assuming in Paris for a few years now an active role of incubators for many artists and Djs. Disappointed by the formatting of the medias, they decided to launch this ParisDjs.com blog to spread their Podcast recorded with their crew of old veterans and young Parisian foxes. So mixes, selections, histories of the music, battles, debates and legendary mix-tapes will flower each week in there. You will finally be able (re-)discover the true soulful spirit of the North-East Paris.

The times they are a-changing A LOT these days. People everywhere around the globe are facing new threats. Propaganda formerly qualified as information or entertainment has been debunked by whistleblowers and you now have to do your own research to understand what's going on. We felt in those hard times our followers would need some musical dope. So when The Dreadless Soldier came by Paris DJs with his latest mix, a fantastic one hour-long trip into DEEP DUBSTEP, which he selected, edited, mixed, mastered and illustrated himself (!), we asked right away if we could podcast the thing and he said yes. Sorry no tracklist, once again, DYOR! ;-)

    (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2019-02-16

New Zealander Mike August, aka Mike Fabulous, aka Lord Echo (and a few more different pseudonyms), is one of those unique multi-instrumentalists/producers you can't pigeonhole in a specific style, blending reggae, funk, Caribbean disco, house, soul & afrofunk — but who's first and foremost a dub artist, just like our own Grant Phabao on the other side of the world...

Between 2010 and 2017, he's put out three times the same album: with nearly the same title, cover artwork & musicians, and roughly the same blend of styles. All three, Melodies, Curiosities and Harmonies are fantastic and deeply recommended to our readers/listeners. There's also a handful of limited edition 7 inches pressed and released in Japan only, appearances on records from The Black Seeds, Shogun Orchestra (two bands Lord Echo's been a member of) or The Frightnrs, and a few other timeless recordings to hunt down.

While constructing this mix, we picked something like 30 amazing tunes produced by, or featuring Lord Echo, and had to reduce the selection by half, to build this podcast... All that to say there's A LOT of music from the man for you to discover. He'll be touring Europe this year in late april/early may, mostly opening for >Fat Freddy's Drop. Try not to miss these, and in all cases, get those 3 albums as soon as possible, the vinyl reissues won't last long! (Hint : we have all three Lord Echo LPs plus a few CDs and rare EPs at the Paris DJs record store…)

    (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2019-12-29

A South Londoner of Ghanian descent, Andrew Ashong is a singer, guitarist, DJ and producer who's only released two EPs so far. On a house, soul and jazz tip, those gained him comparisons with Marvin Gaye, Roy Ayers, Bill Withers or Lewis Taylor — which should intrigue already enough for you to be eager to give this mix a listen. He's been heard collaborating with various musicians such as Tony Allen, Auntie Flo, DJ Yoda, Nightmares On Wax, Theo Parrish, Hector Plimmmer, Sbtrkt, Submotion Orchestra or Swindle… So if you're not excited by now, then you either suffer from musical ignorance or you have a deep reading problem. Anyway, at Paris DJs, we feel this guy has a unique soul sound, combining a smooth cosmic voice with sweet and deeply layered grooves. Hence this mix gathering tunes from his two EPs long with various appearances and collaborations… Hopefully we'll hear more from Andrew Ashong in 2020!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Vito - Selecta 01 - Soulful Grooves
    (Wearplay T-shirt/MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2018-06-04

A long-time activist of the French music scene, Vito has never sold his soul to the music industry. Quite the opposite, he was a member of the Heretik crew, and probably one of the amazing guys who made the legendary rave at the Piscine Molitor in Paris happen, during the spring of 2001 (among other unreal events). A friend of the Paris DJs collective before it even existed, Vito has just always been there, with a deep and constructive sharing spirit. He recently decided to start preparing some soulful mixes for the Paris DJs podcast, and being fully aware of the man's record collection & taste, we're for sure getting the red carpet out for him. Here's his first selection, hopefully the first in a long series…

Paris DJs Soul System - Wearplay LP#29 - Live Dub Session 2018
    (Wearplay T-shirt/MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2018-05-12

Back from their gig at the Glastonbury Festival in 2013, the Paris DJs collective decided to up the game with a brand new stage concept called the Paris DJs Soul System, an innovative show blending deejaying and old school dub session, all with original tunes and remixes, taken from nearly two decades of music production. From Jamaican soul, ska, rocksteady & reggae to American funk & jazz, Nigerian afrobeat or Cameroonian funk, Grant Phabao managed to cross the boundaries of music categorization. With the Dreadless Soldier, alias famous Parisian DJ Erik Rug, they are the first incarnation of the Paris DJs Soul System, presenting here a one hour-long live set, recorded at Paris DJs' studio at the end of 2017. The mix is available as a free download, or Wearplay T-shirt designed by poster artist Ben Hito, using some of the work he did for the Grant Phabao Afrofunk Arkestra album cover (album to be released mid-june 2018 as a limited edition 250 copies vinyl LP, pre-order here).

A selection of soulful 7s from the Paris DJs private record store
    (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2017-09-26

In the back of my mind I had this idea for quite some time, of a selection of vinyl we have in stock at the Paris DJs Record Store. In between other projects I finally managed to make it a reality, thanks to Erik Rug and Loik Dury who helped me pick the best tunes from our 45s stocks, thanks to Grant Phabao who carefully mixed the tracks and mastered the whole thing, and thanks to Ben Hito, who draw another one of his superb creative works to illustrate the mix. Expect uplifting soul, cinematic soul, soul ballads, psychedelic soul, chicano soul, soul-jazz, funky soul, balearic soul, soulful breaks, gospel soul, latin soul, yiddish soul and maybe even modern soul… Most of the records played in this mix are still available in our store, but be quick to grab your favorites because quantities are strictly limited, as with all independent vinyl from today. And don't hesitate to get the collector Wearplay made in France T-shirt we've printed thanks to our partner Le T-shirt Français! - (Djouls)

Hot on the heels of the first season of 15 episodes of Paris DJs & Le T-shirt Français "Wearplay" series, combining clothing, music and graphic design, we're already back with the first episode of the second season! While we won't be able to release a new episode every day of the week this time, we've tried our best to add a new wow factor to our concept. Paris DJs co-founder Loik cooked a hypnotic mix of deep & funky tunes from 1980s Africa, a perfect summer selection, destined to grow on you after repeated listening. Paris DJs' in-house sound engineer Grant Phabao then carefully mastered the mix, while poster artist Ben Hito draw an illustration inspired by the theme and music. Then Clément, the main man behind Le T-shirt Français, printed it on a cotton-brushed, made in France T-shirt of his own production. This mix is available as a free download in compressed MP3 format on Paris DJs' podcast, or as a high-quality audio file on Bandcamp, through a unique download code printed on the back of the Wearplay T-shirt.

Last week's heat wave had us think : when it's that hot, it's high time to get on the groovy train and catch the "Highlife Express"! Whether people call it simply Highlife or Frimpong style, with a pinch of Afrosynth, funky, digital and cosmic vibes (check the second part of the last song!), this is a highly addictive sound. Acting like a soul massage for the heart, it's purely designed to make you feel good. We're proud to share with you these good vibes, through a selection of 80's vinyl mainly from Ghana, supposed to take you on a deep and groovy ride...

We've reached 1985 and most of music is in a really bad shape. Music marketing is starting to morph thanks to the Grateful Dead who re-invented the direct-to-fan business the previous year, but music production is still hitting an unsurpassed low, almost everywhere. It might come as a surprise to everyone following this series of mixes of cover songs all recorded or released the same year, but there's no much sense in keeping on digging for many more months through mid-1980s music, while there's so much quality music from other periods… Which is why we've decided to hurry things up a little bit, with a mix gathering covers released between 1985 and 1987. Hope you'll like it!

1984 is the tipping point, the limit before things start to go really sideways for a few years in music… Out of the 12 tracks we picked here, two were already released in 1982 on small labels or pressings, and one was recorded live in Japan in 1983, so we're cheating a little bit. But the point is to make this mix of covers from 1984 enjoyable to the ears, right? It doesn't really matter, we found our way with some colorful doo-wop, reggae, blues, gospel, new-wave, p-funk, jazz and hip hop cover songs all from records released in 1984! Next week-end we should host a new Afrotropik mix from Loik and the next one we'll put up the follow-up to this yearly series, while every day of the week we'll release a new musical T-shirt in our "Wearplay" series, so stay connected!

    (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2017-03-20

Following up on their 2015 West Indies Vintage Funk mix, American label Cultures Of Soul are back on our podcast with a new episode in the series, this time expanding its Carribean crate-digging mission with US Jazz and African grooves: African music of all diasporas!

Featured in this mix, a track extracted from Cultures Of Soul's latest release, SJOB Movement's 2nd album "Friendship Train" from 1977, reissued with help from Uchenna Ikonne (Comb & Razor). The band incorporated at the time Moog synthesizers sounds to their afro beat formula and the recipe became even tastier. Enjoy the mix and don't hesitate to grab the SJOB Movement LP on COS' store. We might even have a few copies at the Paris DJs private store soon...

For quite some time we wanted to cook a new "extravaganza" mix digging into the vast selection of current artists, bands and producers from the unique "Paris DJs universe". We started gathering recent and upcoming releases from friends, from people we’ve worked with in the past, from many of those musicians who just kill it out there, while being unheard on the radio. It would be impossible to feature them all in one mix, so we stopped at 50 tunes, from 50 different artists and 50 different records. Then we sorted them out by country of origin and found out half were coming from the USA! Maybe you haven’t heard of all those bands yet. How come? It really is a mystery. Anyway we cut the selection in two halves of 25 track each, and here’s a two-hours long selection of Paris DJs’ American friends & family for you to enjoy. And of course we’ll be back soon with another two-hours platter, of many more friends from all over the rest of the world!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1983 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.24

Things have been jumpy lately. The hard drive where ParisDJs.com was hosted died, we had to move to a new server and re-install all the backup. The website has been unavailable for a couple of weeks but we're back up finally, and it was high time we put up this selection of covers from the year 1983, which has been finished for a couple of months already! As you can imagine, since we're approaching the middle of the 1980s, things ain't getting any easier. As a record store owner was telling us some while ago, in 1983 cheap synthesizers landed on the market, sounding as cheap as their price, eveybody started using them, so music stopped being that interesting globally. Which doesn't mean there ain't no gem to find digging the crates, only that the digging has to go deeper than before! And that's how this mix was prepared, through hours of checking releases from 1983, hoping to find interesting, rare grooves from that year, which were covers of other songs… Well we found a private pressing more than inspired by Stevie Wonder, soulful, funky or tropical covers of Weldon Irvine, Rick James, Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone, Al Green, Led Zeppelin or David Bowie, and an early Danny Elfman take on Cab Calloway which will inspire him to re-do it for the "Nightmare Before Christmas" soundtrack (as the "Oingo Bongo song").

Even though it's a brand new year and we have many projects cooking for Paris DJs in the coming months, let's not forget our fan-favorite ongoing series of mixes of cover songs. We've reached now the year 1982, things aren't getting any easier. Madonna made her debut and so did The Violent Femmes. Michael Jackson released "Thriller", Prince somehow was already in "1999" while Talk Talk admits "The Party’s Over". Thankfully crate-digging can also lead to good surprises, as proven in this selection of blues, reggae, funk, disco, electro, P-Funk and new wave cover songs…

    (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2016-12-30

A one hour-long, vinyl-only selection, with forgotten classics and nuggets to be (re)discovered. The mix starts with some Afrofunk (Antoinette Konan, Pat ‘Ndoye, Jean Guéhi); before diving down into the irresistible Cape Verdian pulse: groovy, psych, roots, pop, even nu disco; and closing in Haiti with Claudette & Ti Pierre’s sono mondiale anthem. Loik has been digging deep into his vinyl collection to carefully cook this podcast for heating up the coming long winter nights.

From a groovy/tropical point of view, Interesting cover songs from 1981 weren't that easy to find. The sound of Sly & Robbie, present twice in this mix (with productions for The Tamlins or Bits & Pieces), was an obvious choice, but we've also dug up for you some classic soul, early electro/hip hop, New Orleans backbeat, deep reggae and leftfield grooves. Even with the hardest constraints, the Paris DJs sound rises like a phoenix everytime (no Conchita pun intended).

French collective Around The World supported our crowdfunding campaigns many times. We offered to lend themselves to the Paris DJs thematic mix game and they were kind enough to accept the challenge. ATW picked the number 5 for their theme, and cooked a musical selection in quintuple time (five beats per bar), travelling through Brasil, Cuba, the United States or the United Kingdom — as per the collective's name, around the world. Enjoy this trip in 5/4!

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1980 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.21

Here we are in the deep sea of the 1980s hunting for cool and groovy cover songs. The Betino's Record Store in Paris pointed us towards Gnonnas Pedro's version of James Brown 'I Got You' but we we had mixed and mastered the selection a few hours earlier so it didn't make the cut. Someone on facebook asked if we played Snatch's version of 'Another Brick In The Wall' but we didn't. Digging into this decade is a different kind of fun than the 60s or the 70s, and we think we managed to find some very exciting numbers. You'll let us know what you think. And suggestions for 1981 and 1982 are more than welcome!
