    How Minimalism Saved Our Family

    How Minimalism Saved Our Family

    I'm an aspiring minimalist.

I was overwhelmed by stuff. It felt like I spent all day tidying up and putting things away. I couldn't find the things I needed quickly and with ease. Sometimes I couldn't find them at all. Our weekends were spent in various house projects to maintain all our things.

It was too much. I wanted to enjoy my home and time with my family. So 4 years ago we started on a journey towards minimalism. How did we do it? Was it hard? What worked well and what didn't?

Our entire family has benefited from this venture and we're going to keep at it!

Community and Advice for Becoming a Dad - with Dr. Jay Warren

Community and Advice for Becoming a Dad - with Dr. Jay Warren

Stoller strides for dads? Wait, why doesn't this exist?

In the current world of parenting, dads are doing their best to join in with moms and actively parent. But they are the first to do so to the extent that they are. A few generations ago, and even the previous generation had varied expectations and interactions with their children. So the experience, mentorship, and community that is available to new mothers is largely absent to dads. Dr. Jay Warren joins us to talk about why creating that is important and the potential implications on dads and families.

This is good for everyone! When dads feel empowered they can show up in ways they want to for their families! Mom can feel supported and the family a team. Baby and children feel a peaceful home and calm dynamic as parents work together. Dad can enjoy the experience of parenting more.  And when he needs it, a community of like-minded dads to go to for advice!

Daily Positive Words of Affirmation and Encouragement Everyone Wants to Hear in 2020

Daily Positive Words of Affirmation and Encouragement Everyone Wants to Hear in 2020

I reached out asking how you would encourage a friend who was struggling. What an amazing community! You had such great ideas! It's clear you are a community that knows how to love and care for one another, that knows how to see someone who can use some encouragement be it for everyday stress management or when going through hard times.

But do you talk to yourself in the same way? Or are you like so many of us and at least in some ways - are so much harder on yourself than you are with others?

So today we are flipping the script literally. Included today is a daily meditation with positive messages to start your day and remind you just how awesome you are especially in these difficult times. You are exactly the parent your children need, a loving spouse to your partner, and a good and worthy person.

We hope that you enjoy this exercise and pass it along to your friends as well. Let's spread kindness for ourselves and each other in 2020!

Being Present, Building Community, and Refocusing in 2020

Being Present, Building Community, and Refocusing in 2020

It's been one heck of a year! But it's not over yet. We still have a chance to refocus. A chance to pivot and make some beauty out of this mess.

In this episode, Nancy Elizabeth discusses how her family keeps their energy and mindset focused each year. How with some intention and gentle reminders they choose to work on a shared theme to help bring joy and happiness into their family.

The practice of making a family theme as a greater part of cultivating a family culture has been a simple and fun way to work together. With the unprecedented challenges of 2020 - Nancy has decided to make a decision. See the theme through or regroup and pivot? What's best for everyone? What would your family theme be?

Back to School - Or Not? Distance Learning and Tough Choices

Back to School - Or Not? Distance Learning and Tough Choices

It's not easy. Concerns about health and wellbeing. Concerns about academic rigor. Concerns about social and mental health. Concerns about getting people back to work and surviving financially.

There is a lot for both families and educators to consider about the transition back to school this year. Much as with everything else about this time - it looks different all over the country.

Duality exists with both wanting to stay safe and wanting to get back to school. And that's okay.

I hope that with this you can feel heard. That you can accept your decision or make progress in coming to one. That we can see and accept the decisions of our neighbors and friends with understanding.

Diastasis Recti, Postpartum and Creative Intimacy as Parents - with Dr. Rose Schlaff

Diastasis Recti, Postpartum and Creative Intimacy as Parents - with Dr. Rose Schlaff

What happened down there? Dr. Rose Schlaff discusses some of what might be lingering for a woman after pregnancy. How our hormones can have further implications on our desire and comfort during intimacy postpartum. Honor your inner wisdom and be gentle with yourself. (Go back to Episode 5 on ways to communicate with your partner if you're experiencing discomfort or pain and set healthy expectations.) Ever wondered how to pronounce Diastasis Recti? Have you heard of this possible cause of the "mommy pooch"? I don't love that term but diastasis recti can affect our core, lower back, and pelvic floor leading to strained muscles, pain, incontinence, and pain during sex. Feeling tired? Feeling unsexy after a day of playdough and perpetual snack serving? We discuss getting creative with foreplay, connecting to each other, and connecting to ourselves in order to shift between the aspects of our lives and feel ready to connect physically.

What is successful sex for you? Honest conversations your partner, pelvic floor dysfunction, and endometriosis with Dr. Rose Schlaff

Dr. Rose and I discuss sex through the lens of being an individual person, a partner in relationship, and as a parent. Discovering our own sexuality and what intimacy looks like to each of us. What is success for you? Orgasm? Pleasure? Connection? Rose guides us in talking to our partner about intimacy especially for those experiencing pain. She also provides a guide for our listeners to help start the conversation in a fun way. Check out the link below! We talk further about what be causing or what pain during sex might feel like, and how pelvic floor therapists can assist in endometriosis. Did you know when you watch a scary movie it's your pelvic floor that tenses first? And that 95% of people with lower back pain have some sort of pelvic floor dysfunction? And that it's also related to incontinence, in adults and both bedwetting and constipation in children?
