    PDE-5 inhibitors & Drug Pricing with Dr. Erin L. Albert - Pronunciation Series Episode 25

    PDE-5 inhibitors & Drug Pricing with Dr. Erin L. Albert - Pronunciation Series Episode 25

    This is the 25th episode in drug name pronunciation series.  First, we talk about three brand-generic drug pairs: Viagra and sildenafil; Cialis and tadalafil; & Levitra and vardenafil. Then, Dr. Erin L. Albert talks about drug pricing with teamcubancard.com and costplusdrugs.com.  Erin is a pharmacist and Healthcare Innovator who works for the Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs Company as Vice President of Pharmacy Relations.

    If you’re new to my drug name pronunciation series, welcome! In this episode, I divide all six drug names into syllables, tell you which syllables to emphasize, and share the sources of my information.  Seeing the written pronunciations can be helpful.  All six are below:

    sildenafil = sil DEN a fil, emphasize DEN

    Viagra = vi-AG-rah, emphasize AG

    Tadalafil = ta DA la fil (or my preference ta DAL a fil), emphasize DA or DAL

    Cialis = see-AL-iss, emphasize AL

    vardenafil = var-DEN-a-fil, emphasize DEN

    Levitra = luh-VEE-trah, emphasize VEE

    The written pronunciations for tadalafil and vardenafil are in the USP Dictionary Online.  Sildenafil was not in the USP Dictionary.  For the pronunciation of sildenafil, I relied on my experience as a pharmacist and the similarities between sildenafil and vardenafil.  Thank you USP Legal Dept for permission to share your written pronunciations in my show notes and YouTube videos!

    How do you say ketorolac?  Pronunciation Series Episode 24

    How do you say ketorolac?  Pronunciation Series Episode 24

    This is the 24th episode in my drug name pronunciation series.  Today, we’re talking about ketorolac (Toradol®).  I have heard ketorolac pronounced three different ways.  How do you say it?

    If you’re new to my drug name pronunciation series, welcome! In this episode, I divide ketorolac and Toradol into syllables, explain which syllables you need to emphasize, and reveal the sources of my information.  Seeing the written pronunciations is helpful, so the written pronunciations are below and in the show notes on thepharmacistsvoice.com.

    Ke-TOR-a-LAC

      • Emphasize TOR and LAC
      • TOR gets the most emphasis

    TOR-a-DOL

      • Emphasize TOR and DOL
      • TOR gets the most emphasis

    The purpose of my pronunciation episodes is to provide the intended pronunciations of drug names from reliable sources so you feel more confident saying them and less frustrated learning them.

    My Novel Career in Pharmacy Speech for Pharmacy Students

    My Novel Career in Pharmacy Speech for Pharmacy Students

    This is an encore presentation of a speech I gave to a class of P3 students in the “Exploring Novel Careers in Pharmacy” elective at The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy during Fall Semester 2023.

    This episode is also available via video on my YouTube channel.  YouTube.com/@thepharmacistsvoice or type @thepharmacistsvoice in a YouTube app.

    The instructor’s name is Dr. Michelle Schroeder, and the class was conducted via WebEx.  I had up to 35 minutes to speak about my Novel Career in Pharmacy and 15 minutes for questions, 50 minutes total. Delivering a powerpoint presentation was recommended (but I used Canva), and I was given a list of topics to discuss from my past, present, and future + advice.  I did not speak for the full 35 minutes, and the students were happy to fill the remainder of the class time with questions. They all had good questions, and I share the two that stuck out most to me at the end of this episode.

    Here is the introduction that Dr. Schroder read as she introduced me:

    Kim Newlove is an Ohio pharmacist. She graduated from The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy with her BS Pharm in 2001. Her clinical experience includes hospital, retail, compounding, and behavioral health.

    Kim is no longer in clinical practice.  Instead, she is self-employed in two non-traditional roles.

    First, Kim is a full-time, Independent Caregiver through the Ohio Dept of Developmental Disabilities (DODD). With that role, Kim provides care directly to an adult with a developmental disability in Wood County, Ohio.  She has an NPI number and an Ohio Medicaid billing number.

    Second, Kim is a voice actor and podcast host.  She founded The Pharmacist's Voice ®, LLC in 2017, and launched The Pharmacist’s Voice ® Podcast in 2019.  Her website is https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com.  She is also the host of The Perrysburg Podcast, which you can find at www.perrysburgpodcast.com

    Kim is a go-to pharmacist in audio production.  She believes in the transformative power of well-communicated messages, and her mission is to connect with her audience so that they trust her message.  Her delivery style is confident and trustworthy.

    In her spare time, Kim enjoys spending time with family, playing Ticket to Ride Switzerland 🇨🇭, swimming, and riding her BMW C400X motorbike. 🇩🇪

    The most memorable questions I was asked:

    1. “What’s your why? Why become a voice actor and a podcast host.”
    2. “Who is your white whale? Meaning…Who is the #1 person you want to interview, but you think they’re out of reach for whatever reason?”

    This is a great episode for pharmacist podcasters and pharmacist authors who want to narrate their own audiobooks.  Producing audio files is difficult for novice podcasters and first-time audiobook narrators.  Audivita Studios is a full-service podcast production company that also helps authors who want to narrate their own audiobooks from home.

    Audivita Studios Founder and CEO David Wolf is my guest today.  We discuss audiobooks, podcasting, podcast planning, microphones, and more.

    How do you say Paxlovid?  Pronunciation Series Episode 23

    How do you say Paxlovid?  Pronunciation Series Episode 23

    I divide Paxlovid, nirmatrelvir, and ritonavir into syllables, explain which syllables have the emphasis, and reveal the sources of my information.  The written pronunciations are below and on https://www.thepharmacistsvoice.com.  The purpose of my pronunciation episodes is to provide the intended pronunciations of drug names from reliable sources so you feel more confident saying them and less frustrated learning them.

    Paxlovid = pax LO vid; emphasize LO.

    Nirmatrelvir = NIR ma TREL vir; emphasize NIR and TREL.  TREL gets the most emphasis.

    Ritonavir = ri TON a vir; emphasize TON.

    Interview with RDML Pam Schweitzer, PharmD (Ret) - Veterans Day 2023

    RDML Pam Schweitzer, PharmD returns to the podcast today to talk about Veterans Day and the PBS Documentary Invisible Corps.  Dr. Schweitzer was also featured in episodes 185 and 229 of The Pharmacist’s Voice ® Podcast.

    November 11 is Veterans Day. Veterans Day is a US holiday celebrated annually to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.  On Veterans Day, we thank veterans for their service.  Thank you veterans!  Why talk about the documentary in this episode?  Because it features veterans of the United States Public Health Commissioned Corps.  It fits into my Veterans Day theme.

    Bio (November 2023)

    Rear Admiral (RDML) Pamela Schweitzer retired in September 2018 from a four-year term as the Assistant Surgeon General and 10th Chief Pharmacist Officer of the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps. As Chief Pharmacist Officer (first female in this role), Schweitzer was responsible for providing leadership and coordination of more than 1,300 PHS pharmacy officers in thirteen agencies with the Office of the Surgeon General and the Department of Health & Human Services.

    Schweitzer continues to support the pharmacy profession and national efforts to increase access to public health initiatives, especially in rural and underserved communities.

    Rear Admiral Schweitzer earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Pharmacy, completed an Ambulatory Care/Administrative Residency at University of California Irvine Medical Center.

    Schweitzer has been recognized for her leadership contributions, including the Surgeon General Exemplary Service Medal (2018), ASHP 2019 Distinguished Leadership Award (2019), APhA “Next 10 Women in Pharmacy,” honoree (2022), Cal State University Fullerton Vision & Visionaries Award, Distinguished Alumni (2023).

    Invisible Corps documentary description from https://www.pbs.org: “This one-hour PBS documentary covers the history and role of the Public Health Service, the PHS Commissioned Corps, and how public health has evolved throughout our history. It explores how public health has become politicized and how important it is to change that in order to positively affect the nations’ health for years to come."

    How do you say metformin (Glucophage)?  Pronunciation series episode 22

    How do you say metformin (Glucophage)?  Pronunciation series episode 22

    In this episode, I divide metformin and Glucophage into syllables, explain which syllables have the emphasis, and cite the sources of my information.  The written pronunciations are in the show notes on thepharmacistsvoice.com so that you see them and use them right away.

    The purpose of my pronunciation episodes is to provide the intended pronunciations of drug names from reliable sources so you feel more confident saying them and less frustrated learning them.

    Metformin = met FOR min.  Emphasize FOR

    I found the written pronunciation of metformin in the USP Dictionary Online.

    Glucophage = gloo-kō-fahzh.  Emphasize “gloo” and “fahzh”

    I found the pronunciation of Glucophage in two places:

      1. Printed:  Package Insert (FDA’s website)
      2. Spoken:  BMS Medical Information Dept. 1-800-321-1335

    If you know someone who needs to learn how to say #metformin or #Glucophage, please share this episode with them.

    Drug Disposal Quiz Answers

    Drug Disposal Quiz Answers

    The answers to the Drug Disposal Quiz from episode 242 of The Pharmacists Voice Podcast are the focus of today’s episode.

    My audience is typically pharmacists, pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy professors, pharmacy owners, and medical narrators.  The drug disposal quiz questions are for pharmacy professionals who field questions about drug disposal from well-meaning patients, friends, family, pet-owners, and community members.  These questions (and answers) are meant to prepare you for drug disposal questions so that you can field them at any time of the year.

    I asked 10 questions and crowdsources answers.  In this episode, you will hear input from a number of sources. First is a panel discussion featuring Brittany Sandidge, Ruth Emptage, PharmD, and Kelsey Schmuhl, PharmD from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy’s Generation RX Program, a medication safety-focused educational outreach program.  Then, I’ll share responses from two DEA Representatives.  One is a National Take Back Initiative Coordinator.  The other is a Community Outreach & Prevention Support Program Manager.  Last, but not least, I’ll share input from my poison prevention educator friends Dr. Wendy Stephan and Angel Bivens, RPh and the Poison Help Line (specifically, The Central Ohio Poison Center).
