XB-70 Valkyrie the Mach 3 Bomber that helped commercial aviation

XB-70 Valkyrie the Mach 3 Bomber that helped commercial aviation

Let’s take a look at what was to be the ultimate high speed, high altitude and last manned strategic bomber: The XB-70 Valkyrie.  An aircraft which still looks futuristic even today, the Valkyrie was a Mach 3 bomber which flew at 70,000 feet, rode its own shock wave - and almost wasn’t built.  Changing technologies and advancements in weapons systems nearly doomed this aircraft to just a concept design.  Faced with numerous challenges and setbacks, the Valkyrie was built and flown, just for a completely different purpose from which it was designed.  Today we will take a look at the Valkyrie’s story, and the legacy it leaves behind.

    KC-135 The Flying Gas Station

The Boeing KC-135, nicknamed Stratotanker is an aerial refueling aircraft that has been in continuous service with the USAF for over 60 years with over 800 examples of the C-135 series built.  The first jet powered refueling tanker for the Air Force, the KC135 was conceived to refuel long range strategic bombers at the height of the cold war, however conflicts such as Vietnam and Desert Storm solidified the stratotankers use as a range extender for tactical aircraft and has since become an indispensable asset for the United States and its allies.  The KC 135 has some interesting nicknames and facts which may surprise you, including how it launched the airliner revolution.

Finland Chooses the F-35 Lightning II

Finland Chooses the F-35 Lightning II

In order to replace their legacy F/A-18 Hornets which have been flying for the Finnish Air Force or FAF since 1995, the Ministry of defence initiated a replacement program known as the HX challenge back in 2015.  The goal of the HX challenge was an ambitious one:  procure new multi role fighters while maintaining the FAF’s current numerical strength of 64 and do this with an allocated price cap of 10 billion Euros. These new fighters must be able to endure low temperatures along with harsh weather conditions common to Finland while still performing a diverse range of missions including air superiority, air to ground, anti-ship, reconnaissance, and the ability to conduct deep strikes to deter potential foreign attackers.  Upon choosing a new fighter, the legacy hornets would be phased out between 2025 and 2030, with the new fighter being expected to serve into the 2060s.

The ramifications of the F35 selection are significant for fighter aircraft manufacturers.  Finland joins the ever-growing group of nations that are adopting the F35 over sometimes more geographically closer options such as the Saab Gripen, the Dassault Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon.

A product of the Cold War and 1960s consolidation, the F111 program suffered from an ever-growing list of requirements and was limited to the technology of its time. Despite this, the F111 may just surprise you with its accomplishments, strong legacy and how it may just outlive us all.

Canada says no to the Super Hornet leaving F-35 vs. Gripen

Canada says no to the Super Hornet leaving F-35 vs. Gripen

For some time now, Canada has been looking to replace their legacy CF18 Hornets which have been operating far beyond their planned service life.  As a result, the Canadian government has put forth a request to select a new fighter aircraft by 2022 with a projected program cost of $19 billion along with a strong consideration that some of the aircraft be built locally in Canada. The competition had been narrowed down to three manufacturers:  the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet, the Saab Gripen, and the Lockheed Martin  F-35.

However the competition may have just been narrowed further to two fighters. Boeing has just been informed that the Super Hornet did not meet the federal government’s requirements.

This comes as a surprise to many, who viewed the Super Hornet as a logical replacement to the Legacy Hornet, especially given that Canada is the largest operator of Hornets outside the US.  Additionally, the Super Hornet was the only entry with two engines, which some felt was a necessity when operating over an arctic environment.  Since the specific requirements that the Super Hornet failed to meet have not been released, there is a chance that Boeing could re-enter the competition.

B-58 Hustler The Super Sonic Cold War Bomber

B-58 Hustler The Super Sonic Cold War Bomber

The Convair B58 Hustler was the world's first operational Mach 2 bomber.  Designed to fly high and fast to quickly penetrate the soviet union and deliver its nuclear payload, The B58 served for nearly a decade from March of 1960 until January of 1970.  Everything about the B58 was designed for speed: its narrow fuselage with the three crew members sitting in tandem, a delta wing, and surprisingly the lack of a bomb bay.  Ordinance was carried in an external streamlined pod which housed bombs and additional fuel. Almost as soon as it was introduced, the Soviets had developed high altitude surface to air missiles to counter the Hustler.  This caused the B58 to adapt and employ low level air defense penetration techniques, which both limited its range and strategic value.  Despite this the B58 remains an iconic and memorable aircraft, having set some 19 world records.

F-15 EX the Eagle II - The Ultimate Eagle?

F-15 EX the Eagle II - The Ultimate Eagle?

Let's take a look at what makes the F15EX Eagle II the Ultimate Eagle:
The F-15 Eagle is the embodiment of the air superiority fighter, having been in continuous service with the US Air Force for nearly 50 years.  A fighter with an unprecedented 100+ to zero kill ratio, the F15 was made even better by the introduction of the two seat long range strike fighter version known as the F15E Strike Eagle.  Today the F15E is the most requested asset for Middle East Combat operations - the reason? Loiter or on station time: The Strike Eagle can carry as much fuel as its empty weight.  To put that in context the F15E can carry as much fuel as the total weight of a fully fueled F16!  Along with this, the Strike Eagle has a Weapons System officer or WSO which acts as another brain and set of eyes in the cockpit.  The WSO has various dedicated standardized roles, for example during close air support missions, the WSO exclusively uses the targeting pod, freeing up the pilot and minimizing the time to kill chain.  Another example is when a Strike Eagle pilot is busy refueling, the WSO can receive and copy an interdiction message from a JTAC controller on the ground, something that would be impossible in a single pilot cockpit.  The Strike Eagle also makes use of one of the best Active Electronically Scanned Array or AESA radars in service.  The F15E's AN/APG-82 AESA radar represents a continuous evolution of the F15's sensor suite, providing unprecedented situational awareness, jamming capabilities, and range.  The F15's large size is an asset here, allowing it to fit a much larger and more potent radar sensor package than would be possible to fit in smaller fighters. Additionally the Strike Eagle makes use of a built-in satellite radio, allowing it to communicate over the horizon to critical nodes or assets.
Keep in mind everything mentioned so far has been about the existing F15E Strike Eagles, now let's get into what makes the EX version so special, and why it's a win-win for the USAF.
