This podcast is designed around the reality that many of our churches are shrinking because we haven’t created a place where everyone can belong. So if you’re seeing that reality in your own church, or you’ve experienced that and left the church, this podcast is for you.

Summary: Cana invites us into the mind of character Inigo Montoya from the cult classic film “The Princess Bride.” Then she moves deftly to the words of the Psalmist in Psalm 25 and helps us to see that God’s guidance has been there all along--if only we will ask for it.

    PreacHer: Katelyn Hargrave

Summary: As a woman called to ministry, Katelyn felt repeatedly pushed out, excluded, and heard the message that she did not belong in ministry. She resonates with this man in Mark’s Gospel who boldly heals in Christ’s name while the insiders try to invalidate his ministry. But the hospitality of Jesus is surprising, inclusive, and reciprocal. About the healer and about Katelyn, Jesus says “they belong, they’re doing my work.” To be a Jesus follower is to let go of power and ego and control, and to embrace the subversive leadership and hospitality of Jesus.

Summary: God tells Jonah to go. And the funny thing is, when you think about modern-day missionaries, they have a really hard time getting funding to go to places that may not be receptive. But with Jonah--he knows that they’ll turn from their ways, that they’ll repent and want to come back to YHWH. There’s no question in his mind that they’ll accept his message. He just doesn’t want to deliver it. It’s not fair. Why should they be forgiven and allowed back in?

Summary: The book of Hosea has long been one of my favorite stories. The first three chapters especially--though dark and haunting--contain the most beautiful story of love ever. It is not the story of Hosea loving Gomer despite her prostitution. Rather, it is God loving me despite mine. It is the timeless story of the persons and people of God believing themselves to be faithful to YHWH even as we chase false lovers and the unremitting steadfast commitment of YHWH to the bride.

Summary: What is the relationship between doubt and faith? Although common use of these concepts pits them as opposites, the story of Job in the Hebrew Bible gives us another way to think about it. In so doing, it frees us all to live with God more honestly, for the sake of ourselves and the world.

Summary: Who should be invited to sit at our table? This sermon explores the relationship between inclusive, diverse community, and God's name "El Roi" (the God who sees me). In order to create a thriving, diverse community, the church must be committed to seeing others and including them, much like God does throughout the Bible. We can feel equipped for this task by regularly reminding ourselves that God sees us and that God is delighted to include us at God's table.

Summary: Adapted from a previously preached homily on the Book of Ruth, this sermon takes listeners along the journey of two widows: Naomi (from Bethlehem in Judah) and Ruth (a foreigner from Moab). This tragic and ultimately hope-filled story gives Bible-believing people permission to both lament our misfortune and believe that God may yet have something more in store for us. The good news Frederick expounds is that God often works through the marginalized, the scandalized, and the traumatized to bring about God's ultimate redemptive purposes. God even works through an outsider like Ruth to facilitate the redemption of those inside the covenant community.

Summary: The prophecy of Isaiah 61 is being fulfilled right now. We are in the midst of an apocalypse - a great unveiling of the way things really are. And we who once were blind can no longer live as if we do not see. Prophets are crying out in our streets daily, #letmelive #Icantbreathe #BlackLivesMatter and freedom is on the horizon. Will the church partner with God to usher in release for the captives? Will the church embody Good News for the oppressed? How will the history books tell the story of the church in this era?

Summary: Acts 18 marks the conclusion of Paul's second evangelistic journey as well as the beginning of the well-storied Corinthian church.  One might expect this beginning to be heroically auspicious as it derives from the ministry of the most beloved Paul. However, this particular beginning emerges far more relatable from the awareness of a suffering journey and Paul's subsequent response. Join us to hear God's reaction to fear in the life of Paul. From within these eleven verses emerges a focal point of Paul's service to the Corinthian believers that continues to resonate through Paul's words into our lives today:

"So I am well pleased with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, and with difficulties, for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak [in human strength], then I am strong [truly able, truly powerful, truly drawing from God’s strength]." 2 Corinthians 12:10 (Amplified Bible)
