In this episode, Brady Kuan interviews Jake Knighton and Paul Price. All three of these individuals first came to Brighton Recovery for treatment and, after a year or two of sobriety, all three now work for Brighton. Many recovering addicts develop a desire to give back to the recovery community after treatment. Some even use their own experience to begin a career in addiction treatment. This can be an overwhelming goal because it’s not always clear where to start or how to proceed. Brady, Jake, and Paul give insider tips on how they accomplished this goal. They also talk about staying persistent, and certain pitfalls to watch out for. They discuss keeping your own recovery and working in recovery separate, along with the rewards and stresses of this career.

Recovery Day 2019 - Recovery Soapbox

Recovery Day 2019 - Recovery Soapbox

The first time we took our cameras to Recovery Day, a wonderful, free event for all ages, we knew we'd keep coming back! In this episode, you'll hear stories of triumph and hope from people ranging with just a few months of sobriety all the way up to 30 years. Their messages are inspiring and definitely worth a listen. This year at Recovery Day, things started off with the 5K Run for Recovery, followed by speakers, music, awards, activities, and lots of community support. It was held on Saturday, September 14 at the Gallivan Plaza in Salt Lake City. Watch for next year's date and be sure to get it on your calendar! If you like the stories shared in this episode, please check out our coverage from National Recovery Day

We knew it would be difficult to record at a large and noisy event, but we hope you can get past the background noise, because the messages are too good not to share.

    Quotes from Recovery Day:

"Faith is hope with a track record. I kept hoping I'd stay sober. I kept hoping I'd get over the next hurdle. Now I know I will and I don't have to do it alone." - Jodie

"Hand-in-hand, we end up going through life together." - Jodie

"Be gentle with yourself. Recovery does not occur overnight and even with 30 years of sobriety, I still don't have it all figured out." - Sharon

"The excitement of recovery is finding out what I can do to connect with myself today." - Allie

"Recovery is never-ending growth." - Allie

    Recovery Day 2018

    Recovery Day 2018

For this episode, we packed up our recording equipment and headed to downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, for a chance to film at the Recovery Day celebration. We grabbed random-yet-willing participants to answer a few important questions about addiction and recovery. Their answers were as varied as their backgrounds, but they were all true and inspiring. There was no way we could fit all of the interviews into one episode, so keep your eyes out for more to come.

    Full video of this episode

Recovery Day is celebrated each year throughout Utah in eight separate counties. Though each of these counties celebrates separately, the state as a whole unites for the purpose of supporting those affected by substance use disorder and promoting recovery. Salt Lake City's Recovery Day is typically held in September at the Gallivan Center. The event includes the 5K Run for Recovery, speakers, live music, food, vendor exhibits, sponsors, and activities for the whole family. Recovery Day is a free event that is open to the public.
