Sometimes we equate having children to having problems! 

And that can actually be part of the the issue - how we see our own children. Of course all children have problems.  All adults do as well! Yet somehow we get in our heads that our kids should be doing better than we ever did as kids. Or at the very least we expect them to be doing better than they are.

We forget that to learn, to grow, to master, takes repeated practice.

And as we reframe our expectations with that in mind, the Pygmalion Effect kicks in in our favor to work mighty miracles in reconnecting our hearts to theirs so that they feel and know that they belong, that they are beautiful, and that they can overcome.

The predominant me-first culture of our society today is destroying character, and it is happening the fastest with our children.

According to Kimberly Ells in The Invincible Family, "the endgame of all these [worldly] tactics is to convince the woman and society that children do not need their mothers or fathers. The goal is to convince women and men that raising their own children is a waste of their time, their money, and ultimately—their lives."

Today there are many more attacks on the family than we ever thought possible.

We can't allow the prevailing culture to take over our family culture. We have to stand and not be overrun. But how do we do that?

It has been a long time since we were kids.  Sometimes we forget how hard it could be day to day, especially as teenagers.

But what's worse is that the world is a much darker and harder place now for our kids than it was for us growing up.

When we lose sight of that and expect our children to do what we never did - to be perfect, we heap condemnation and disappointment on their already heavy load, and estrange ourselves from them in the process.  Not good.  It's like a cancer sucking the light and life out of our families.

As a species, we are naturally self-deprecating.  We beat ourselves up.  Over the biggest and even the smallest things.

This is true of our children as well, and especially for our teens.  That means that they are struggling with their sense of identity and worth.  And rather than having them seeking validation from peers, we want to make sure they are connected to us and to God so that they truly understand who they are, that they have great purpose, and that they are needed!  And of course, that we do in fact love them as well.
