Revolver Reads: Book Club Russian Roulette

A book club podcast where four friends (Nav, Rebecca, and Vanessa) let the wheel of doom choose a book that may enlighten them or bring their minds further into the depths of hell. Once a month six books are put into the wheel: five are supposedly "good" while the sixth is the notoriously "bad" (the bullet in the chamber, so to speak). Once the wheel of doom has spoken the podcasters have a month to read the book independently and they come together again to discuss their findings, or lack thereof. Listeners are welcome to join as at the end of each episode next month's book is chosen and announced!

Episode 11: To Die, To Game, Perchance To Ruin Friendships - Die Volume 1: Fantasy Heartbreaker by Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans

Welcome to November, the month where we got cozy and took a visual adventure to a land far, far away.

The Wheel of Doom rolled a nat 20 and chose the lovechild between Kieron Gillen's master storytelling and Stephanie Hans' breathtaking artistry in Die Volume 1: Fantasy Heartbreaker. Don't let the page count fool you because this graphic novel has weight.

Six high school friends begin a quest of nightmares as they are dragged into the world of Die and are unable to escape for two years. Six turns to five as they are brought back into the real world and the remaining are unable to explain anything about their horrific experience.

Bring your own dice set because we've learned we CANNOT trust others and join us as we delve into the world of Die.

[HALLOWEEN THEME] Episode 10: Mung Diving Into Daddy Issues - Gerald's Game by Stephen King

    Boo!  👻

    Did we get ya?

If we didn't, the King of Horror, Stephen King should have done the trick (or treat?) with this month's Halloween themed pick, Gerald's Game. Welcome to our second themed pick for Revolver Reads.

We were taken captive by the tragically sad life of Jessie Burlingame while she lay trapped in her bed for the foreseeable future.

Please join us (like we had a choice) as we delve into the inner workings of Jessie's mind and plot our escape.

The full list of trigger warnings is available on TheStoryGraph, however, some notable triggers are sexual assault, child abuse, paedophilia, blood, and gore.

Additionally, King's representation of kink is unsafe and not an accurate depiction of a healthy, kinky relationship. Please remember kink has to be sane, safe, and consensual (SCC) and/or also follow the Risk-Aware Consensual Kink ideology (RACK). Here is a decent resource posted by Northwestern University, but, please feel free to do your own research [wink wink].

[BACK TO SCHOOL THEME] Episode 9: For Furry Thou Art, and Unto Furries Shalt Thou Return - The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

We hope you said your goodbyes to summer because September is here and we've recorded our biggest #tbt yet. This month we are happy to announce our very first themed episode in honour of the start of Fall, Back To School.

The Wheel of Doom's pick might have been too on the nose when we said we wanted something for "The Fall". It chose from a list of YA/children's literature with our Back to School theme and selected a modern retelling of John Milton's Paradise lost, The Golden Compass  by Philip Pullman's (yet another series, sorry not sorry). Quite a fall indeed.

We were sent on a brave yet controversial journey to the North with this critically acclaimed and religiously hated novel. Don't forget your lunch as we join Lyra on her quest to rescue her friends and the world from the greedy hands of the Gobblers.

[MISFIRE] Episode 1: Sapphic and Beta Waves by the Beach - The Guest List by Lucy Foley

[MISFIRE] Episode 1: Sapphic and Beta Waves by the Beach - The Guest List by Lucy Foley

Hi folks. This month due to a number of seen and unforeseen factors we decided to not proceed with our August book, The Civil Campaign  by Lois McMaster Bujold. This book has been post-posted to a later date in the future. We sincerely apologise for the last minute change and we appreciate your understanding.

In lieu of our August pick we are publishing this blooper pick of the past before we started publishing online. The audio is terrible, but it has everything: Nav's audio sounds like it was recorded in a bog, Claire has a breakup pie, Rebecca can't speak, and Vanessa was actually fine, but is guilty by proxy. Welcome to our first bonus episode series with Revolver Reads A.K.A. a Misfire.

The skies are grey, the waters are choppy, and there's murder afoot in this month's pick, The Guest List by Lucy Foley. The bride and groom made the brilliant choice of setting their wedding on a remote island in Ireland where only the best things could happen right? Yeah, not so much.

Blood is spilled and the readers are left to put the pieces together of who committed the crime.

Put on your wellies and join us with all of this peat in this month's episode.

Episode 8: By The Pricking of Our Thumbs, Something Sadly Relevant This Way Comes - The Year of the Witching by Alexis Henderson

Is it hot this July or is it just us? No wait, that's just the hellfire waiting for us on the other side.

This month we fanned the sweltering July flames with Alexis Henderson's The Year of the Witching  A.K.A. Bethel, #1.

Welcome to Bethel, a town suffering under the Puritanical rule of The Prophet and those who choose to uphold his moralistic reign. It is up to Immanuelle Moore, a young and powerful woman, to set things right-- perhaps with the help of a series of undead witches lurking in the woods.

Shed your smock and stockings and join us while we dance madly around the flames. Round and round and round we go, where Immanuelle Moore shall stop, we shall never know.

Fist deep, mountain high. This month we dig our fingers into She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan, a queer historical fantasy surrounding the rise of the Ming Dynasty in 14th Century China.  This tale has been compared to both The Song of Achilles and Mulan, but She Who Became the Sun was fated for greatness far beyond those titles.

Episode 1: And They Were Tentmates - The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

This month we discuss The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, a re-telling of the classic tale of Achilles with a pleasantly surprising twist. In this ancient story, the novel revolves around Patroclus, Achilles' childhood friend and eventual partner in war, and let's just say they share more than a tent, if you catch my drift.
