Spencer Tracy with James Curtis (12/28/2020)

Spencer Tracy with James Curtis (12/28/2020)
Spencer Tracy’s image on-screen was that of a self-reliant man whose sense of rectitude toward others was matched by his sense of humor toward himself. Whether he was Father Flanagan of Boys Town, Clarence Darrow of Inherit the Wind, or the crippled war veteran in Bad Day at Black Rock, Tracy was forever seen as a pillar of strength. Now James Curtis, acclaimed biographer of Preston Sturges (“Definitive” —Variety), James Whale, and W. C. Fields (“By far the fullest, fairest, and most touching account . . . we have yet had. Or are likely to have” —Richard Schickel, The New York Times Book Review, cover review), gives us the life of one of the most revered screen actors of his generation. James Curtis is the author of "W.C. Fields: A Biography", which was awarded the Special Jury Prize by the Theatre Library Association and named one of the Notable Books of the Year by the New York Times. He is also the author of "William Cameron Menzies: The Shape of Films to Come," "Spencer Tracy: A Biography," "James Whale: A New World of Gods and Monsters," and "Between Flops," an acclaimed biography of writer-director Preston Sturges. He is married and lives in Brea, California. https://www.amazon.com/Spencer-Tracy-Biography-James-Curtis/dp/0307262898

88th Anniversary of Radio City Music Hall & Rosie Novellino-Mearns (12/27/2020)

88th Anniversary of Radio City Music Hall & Rosie Novellino-Mearns (12/27/2020)
Radio City Music Hall is an entertainment venue at 1260 Avenue of the Americas, within Rockefeller Center, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Nicknamed the Showplace of the Nation, it is the headquarters for the Rockettes, the precision dance company. It opened on December 27, 1932, as part of the construction of Rockefeller Center. The 5,960-seat Music Hall was the larger of two venues built for Rockefeller Center's "Radio City" section, the other being Center Theatre. It was largely successful until the 1970s, when declining patronage nearly drove the Music Hall to bankruptcy. Join us when Rosemary Novellino-Mearns, former member of the Radio City Music Hall Ballet Company and Dance Captain, and author of "Saving Radio City Music Hall: A Dancer's True Story," shares her delightful, informative, and true story of saving Radio City Music Hall. Rosie headed the group that took on the money interests that had decided to demolish the classic Art Deco masterpiece and one of New York City's premiere tourist attractions. https://www.amazon.com/SAVING-RADIO-CITY-MUSIC-HALL-ebook/dp/B016CMON7K https://www.facebook.com/rosie.novellinomearns https://craighill.net/2012/12/27/december-27-1932-radio-city-music-hall-opens https://www.facebook.com/SavingRadioCityMusicHall/

Cissy Wellman and They Say I Come From Hollywood Royalty... (12/23/2020)

Cissy Wellman and They Say I Come From Hollywood Royalty... (12/23/2020)
They Say I Come From Hollywood Royalty... So Where’s My Crown? is a collection of delightful and funny stories by Cissy Wellman about her life growing up in Hollywood. As the daughter of one of America’s most famous directors, William “Wild Bill” Wellman (whose films include Wings, A Star Is Born, Beau Geste, The Story of G.I. Joe, The Ox-Bow Incident, Public Enemy and dozens of others), Cissy counted among her friends some of the great directors, actors and singers of all time, including director Howard Hawks and the legendary Elvis Presley. But this book is not a tell-all; instead, these stories reveal the good heartedness, humor and loyalty of Hollywood stars. Cissy describes her triumphs and hard times as a dancer, choreographer and actor (she appeared in The Waltons for five seasons as well as many other shows), her many adventures with friends, and the love she shared with two wonderful men. A delightful, heartwarming book. Cissy Wellman, actress, dancer, director, writer, the fifth of seven children. She is the daughter of pioneer film director/producer/writer William A. Wellman, also known as Wild Bill Wellman, and Busby Berkeley dancer and actor Dorothy Coonan. Raised on a 4+ acre farm in Brentwood, California, Cissy now lives in Valley Village, California with her cats, hummingbirds, squirrels and on occasion racoons. https://youtu.be/OwvBebZSrg4 https://www.amazon.com/They-Hollywood-Royalty-Wheres-Crown/dp/B08L4C8NWK https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0920048/

James LaVeck: Life After Losses: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Life (12/11/2020)

James LaVeck: Life After Losses: A Memoir of Love, Loss and Life (12/11/2020)
“And so, I would have to find my way through the grief, learning lessons along the way. I'd stumble, I'd do things that were perfectly normal to me in my mind, but in hindsight were incredibly destructive. And I didn't care.” You only truly understand grief when you lose someone and realize that you lost a part of yourself. Love is the ultimate paradox. It enables us to become the best version of ourselves while we remain emotionally vulnerable. But how can you ever rationalize grief? You can’t. The best that you can do is to learn to live with it. In his deeply personal memoir, James LaVeck relates his life with his first husband, Bob, who, despite fighting valiantly, lost his life. After a number of years, and with the great struggle of getting back to himself, he fell in love again with his second husband, coincidentally also named Bob, and lost him too. Exuberant in its character, the poised narrative articulates the necessity of coming to terms with an overbearing sense of loss of losing a significant other and finding the strength to rediscover oneself through the overwhelming pain. Through Life After Losses, the author shares a human experience in dealing with life after the fact and, in small measures, making it work. In his honest journey from grief toward recovery, the author shares the struggles and practical advice to healing, and how he made the conscious decision on how to model grieving behavior to his children. It is his hope that, by sharing his experiences, others in similar situations can resonate with and find inspiration in the messages of hope, courage, and faith. https://www.amazon.com/Life-After-Losses-Memoir-Love-ebook/dp/B08NRMZQM1 https://jlaveck.com/lifeafterlosses

From there, she went immediately into the chorus of Ethel Merman’s Gypsy. Marie was featured in seven Broadway productions after that, directed by some of the great directors of that time – Gene Saks, Noel Willman, Morton DaCosta, Tom Conti and Bob Fosse. In-between, Marie starred in ABC’s classic gothic drama, Dark Shadows for two years, getting a chance to play three diverse roles – first, Eve “the most evil lady who ever lived”, “Crazy” Jenny Collins, and then Megan Todd who finally was smitten/bitten by the 175-year-old-vampire Barnabas.
